These powerful exorcisms are performed in parishes every year

You may have already seen one occur right before your eyes.

Did you know that you may have already seen an exorcism? It probably wasn’t anything like The Exorcist, but it shares the same goal of expelling the influence of evil from a person.These exorcisms are performed each year and begin on the Third Sunday of Lent. It is part of the final preparations for catechumens who will be baptized and received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.

This final phase of Christian preparation is called the “Period of Purification and Enlightenment” and is aimed at personal conversion, preparing the heart to receive the many graces of God.

Included in this phase is the celebration of “scrutinies” that are “are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good … to give them strength in Christ … and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all.”

The scrutinies are typically performed during Sunday Mass, after the homily, and take the usual place of the petitions. Then at the end of the petitions there is a “minor exorcism” where the priest or deacon invokes God’s intercession over the catechumens to remove any darkness that inhibits the light of Christ.

God of power,

you sent your Son to be our Savior.

Grant that these catechumens,

who, like the woman of Samaria, thirst for living water,

may turn to the Lord as they hear his word

and acknowledge the sins and weaknesses that weigh

them down.

Protect them from vain reliance on self

and defend them from the power of Satan.

Free them from the spirit of deceit,

so that, admitting the wrong they have done,

they may attain purity of heart

and advance on the way to salvation.

This rite is similar to the minor exorcism performed before the sacrament of Baptism, but is longer and occurs on three subsequent Sundays.

While it may not be as flashy as the exorcisms of Hollywood, the Church believes that these exorcisms are powerful and are an essential part of the preparation before being baptized into the Catholic Church.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, JUNE 30)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us give thanks to the Lord:

his love endures for ever!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“Come unto me and rest;

Lay down, O weary one, lay down

Your head upon my breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was,

So weary, worn, and sad;

I found in him a resting place,

And he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“Behold, I freely give

The living water; thirsty one,

Stoop down and drink, and live.”

I came to Jesus, and I drank

Of that life-giving stream;

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,

And now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“I am this dark world’s light;

Look unto me, your morn shall rise,

And all your day be bright.”

I looked to Jesus, and I found

In him my Star, my Sun;

And in that light of life I’ll walk

Till traveling days are done.

PSALM 119:169-176

The Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost. (Lk 19:10)

Having wandered from any true sense of a spiritual home and any real sense of direction, many are lost, and they hunger hopelessly for they know not what. God, however, is a tireless seeker.

Lord, let my cry come before you:

teach me by your word.

Let my pleading come before you;

save me by your promise.

Let my lips proclaim your praise

because you teach me your commands.

Let my tongue sing your promise

for your commands are just.

Let your hand be ready to help me,

since I have chosen your precepts.

Lord, I long for your saving help

and your law is my delight.

Give life to my soul that I may praise you.

Let your decrees give me help.

I am lost like a sheep; seek your servants

for I remember your commands.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 15:4-6)

What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.”

I will rescue my people from the land of the rising sun, and from the land of the setting sun.
(Zec 8:7)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return/ and enter Zion singing,/ crowned with everlasting joy. (Is 35:10)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Ask St. Raphael to protect your health while traveling

The next time you travel for work or for a vacation, ask St. Raphael to preserve your health.

Traveling always has its challenges and risks, but in the present time, those risks have only gone up. While some are comfortable with always staying at home, many of us have to travel, whether it is for work or simply to take a break or vacation.Whatever your situation may be, St. Raphael the Archangel is the perfect intercessor!

St. Raphael is known as a patron saint for travelers, as well as a patron saint of healing. This is based on his biblical appearance in the book of Tobit. The name Raphael in Hebrew can be rendered as “God heals,” “Divine Healer,” or “Remedy of God.”

St. Raphael, a powerful healer for anyone suffering right now

Here is a prayer adapted from the Golden Manual that invokes St. Raphael’s protection while traveling, specifically to preserve your good health.

May the almighty and merciful God direct us in the way of peace and prosperity; and may the Angel Raphael accompany us in our journey, that we may return to our home with joy, in peace, safety and good health.

Give ear, O Lord, to our supplications, and favorably direct your servants in the way of your salvation; that amidst all the changes of this our life and pilgrimage, we may ever be protected by your help. Amen.

V. Let us go forth in peace.

R. In the name of the Lord.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, JUNE 30)

Prayer for the Morning

Christ is our light: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Rise, O glorious orb of day,

Draw the curtains from the sky;

Let your light in glad array,

All creation beautify;

Bid the fears of darkness born,

Melt before the light of morn.

Light transcendent! fill the skies,

Glorious orb of heav’nly light!

Take the darkness from our eyes,

Fill our souls with visions bright.

Jesus, Light of lights, appear,

Rise upon our souls with cheer.

From your throne of splendor bright,

Shed your glory far abroad;

Let the wanderers in their plight

See the path that leads to God,

And upon their pathway shine,

Heav’nly orb of light divine.

There no sun illumes the day,

Where the wanderers find their rest;

Moon nor stars their light display

In the kingdom of the blest;

For the Christ himself is Sun,

And the day is never done.

PSALM 30:3-6, 11-13

For you who fear my name, there will arise/ the sun of justice with its healing rays. (Mal 3:20)

At the end of a long night of sleeplessness or suffering, sunrise brings joy and hope for the day to come. At the end of the long night of death and sin, the rising of Christ, the Sun of Justice, brings joy and hope for the life to come. In the light of the Resurrection, we see and live anew, knowing that all is in and from God’s hand, returning all to him with thanks and praise.

O Lord, I cried to you for help

and you, my God, have healed me.

O Lord, you have raised my soul from the dead,

restored me to life from those who sink into the grave.

Sing psalms to the Lord, you who love him,

give thanks to his holy name.

His anger lasts a moment; his favor through life.

At night there are tears, but joy comes with dawn.

The Lord listened and had pity.

The Lord came to my help.

For me you have changed my mourning into dancing,

you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.

So my soul sings psalms to you unceasingly.

O Lord my God, I will thank you for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Malachi 1:11)

From the rising of the sun, even to its setting,/ my name is great among the nations;/ And everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name,/ and a pure offering;/ For great is my name among the nations,/ says the Lord of hosts.

Those in the west shall fear the name of the Lord,/

and those in the east, his glory. (Is 59:19a)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The daybreak from on high will visit us! (Lk 1:78)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Padre Pio’s favorite prayer of petition

It is actually a prayer composed by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, commonly called the “Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”

Typically, when someone asks us to pray for a specific intention, we have our “go-to” prayer. It might be the Rosary, an Our Father, or simply a heartfelt plea to God. St. Pio of Pietrelcina (more commonly known as “Padre” Pio) had his, which he prayed for everyone who asked for his prayers. Every day, Padre Pio was asked by numerous people, whether in person or by letter, to pray for a specific intention and many times this intention was miraculously answered by God.Below is the prayer that Padre Pio would pray each time he wanted to intercede for someone. It is actually a prayer composed by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and is commonly called the “Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” She was a saint and a mystic who lived in the 17th century, and received multiple visions of Jesus during her lifetime.

Many believe this is a powerful prayer because it calls upon the heart of Jesus to have mercy on us and our petitions. Jesus’ heart is indeed full of love and compassion and this prayer trusts in that love, believing that he is tender enough to generously grant our petition if it is in his holy will.

When we’re depressed or feeling blue, this prayer from Padre Pio is a way to reach out

Above all things, it must be prayed with a sincere faith, as Padre Pio would have prayed it, and not as a candy dispenser. God is not a genie who grants us whatever wish we desire, but instead responds in love to a child who asks for something, knowing exactly what we need.

I. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of …… (here name your request)
Our Father …. Hail Mary …. Glory Be to the Father …. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

II. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of ……. (here name your request) Our Father …. Hail Mary ….Glory Be to the Father …. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

III. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.” Encouraged by your infallible words I now ask for the grace of ….. (here name your request) Our Father …. Hail Mary …. Glory Be to the Father … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your tender Mother and ours.
Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, JUNE 29)

Prayer for the Evening

Praised be the Lord,

whom the Apostles served!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Two stalwart trees both rooted

In faith and holy love,

By hope of God united

They reach to heaven above.

One on a cross is martyred,

One by the sword is slain;

Both triumph in their dying,

Both glorious sainthood gain.

The words of Paul assure us

Of Christ’s redeeming word;

The works of Peter show us

How we may serve the Lord.

All glory to the Father,

All glory to the Son,

Who with the Holy Spirit,

Now reign, blest Three in One.

CANTICLE (Revelation 2:7, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21)

Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 15:57)

Christ in glory makes these promises to “the victor,” the one who perseveres in faith to the end, even in the face of suffering and death. Saints Peter and Paul surely stand at the center of the victorious throng and continue to pray for all of us still on the road!

To the victor I will give the right to eat from the tree of life

that is in the garden of God.

To the victor I shall give some of the hidden manna;

I shall also give a white amulet upon which is inscribed a new name,

which no one knows except the one who receives it.

To the victor, who keeps to my ways until the end,

I will give authority over the nations.

The victor will be dressed in white,

and I will never erase his name from the book of life

but will acknowledge his name

in the presence of my Father and of his angels.

The victor I will make into a pillar in the temple of my God,

and he will never leave it again.

On him I will inscribe the name of my God

and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem,

which comes down out of heaven from my God,

as well as my new name.

I will give the victor the right to sit with me on my throne,

as I myself first won the victory and sit with my Father on his throne.

Word of God (Philippians 2:16-18)

Hold on to the word of life, so that my boast for the day of Christ may be that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. But, even if I am poured out as a libation upon the sacrificial service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with all of you. In the same way you also should rejoice and share your joy with me.

Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life,

to which you were called. (1 Tm 6:12)

TE DEUM

They shall receive the splendid crown,/ the beauteous diadem, from the hand of the Lord. (cf. Wis 5:16)

You are God: we praise you;

You are the Lord: we acclaim you;

You are the eternal Father:

All creation worships you.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,

Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,

your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,

and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,

the eternal Son of the Father.

When you became man to set us free

you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death,

and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.

We believe that you will come, and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,

bought with the price of your own blood,

and bring us with your saints

to glory everlasting.

INTERCESSIONS

On the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul, pillars of the Church, let us pray to Jesus Christ, the Son of God:

R/Stay with your people, Lord!

You made of Simon Peter, the fisherman, a fisher of human souls:

– send new preachers in our day so that the multitudes may hear the word. R/

You gathered the disciples around Peter after your Resurrection:

– gather your people into a single flock, under a single shepherd. R/

You sent your Apostle Paul to preach the Gospel to the pagans:

– send your word to all peoples. R/

You gave to your Church the keys of the Kingdom:

– open the gates of heaven to all those who have put their faith in you. R/

Our Father….

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen. (cf. 2 Cor 13:13)

The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Most Catholics—indeed, most Christians, and not a few non-Christians—are familiar with the prayer known as the Prayer of Saint Francis. Usually ascribed to Saint Francis of Assisi, the 13th-century founder of the Franciscan order, the Prayer of Saint Francis is in fact only a century old. The prayer first appeared in a French publication in 1912, in Italian in the Vatican City newspaper L’Osservatore Romano in 1916, and was translated into English in 1927.

The Italian publication was made at the order of Pope Benedict XV, who worked tirelessly for peace during World War I and saw the Prayer of Saint Francis as a tool in his campaign to end the war. Similarly, the Prayer of Saint Francis became well known in the United States during World War II, when Francis Cardinal Spellman, the archbishop of New York, had millions of copies distributed to the Catholic faithful to encourage them to pray for peace.

There is no parallel to the Prayer of Saint Francis in the known writings of Saint Francis of Assisi, but after a century, the prayer is known today only by this title. A musical adaptation of the prayer, Make Me a Channel of Your Peace, was written by Sebastian Temple and published in 1967 by Oregon Catholic Press (OCP Publications). With its simple melody, easily adapted to guitar, it became a staple of folk Masses in the 1970’s.

The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is error, the truth;

Where there is doubt, the faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Where there is darkness, light;

And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

Grant that I may not so much seek

To be consoled, as to console;

To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

How to Pray the 9 Days of the Divine Mercy Novena

The Divine Mercy Novena

The Divine Mercy novena began as a private devotion which Our Lord revealed to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. The words of the prayers were dictated by Christ Himself to Saint Faustina, and Saint Faustina recorded in her diary Our Lord’s instructions for each day’s prayer.

Christ asked Saint Faustina to recite the novena starting on Good Friday and ending on Divine Mercy Sunday, the Octave of Easter (the Sunday after Easter Sunday). The novena can be recited at any time of the year, however, and it is often accompanied by the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which Our Lord also revealed to Saint Faustina.

Below you’ll find intentions, meditations, and prayers for each of the nine days of the novena.

The First Day: Mercy for All Mankind

For the first day of the Divine Mercy novena, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all mankind, especially sinners. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me all mankind, especially all sinners, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. In this way you will console Me in the bitter grief into which the loss of souls plunges Me.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, whose very nature it is to have compassion on us and to forgive us, do not look upon our sins but upon our trust which we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us all into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart, and never let us escape from It. We beg this of You by Your love which unites You to the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon all mankind and especially upon poor sinners, all enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion show us Your mercy, that we may praise the omnipotence of Your mercy for ever and ever. Amen.”

The Second Day: Mercy for Priests and Religious

For the second day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of priests, monks, and nuns. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me the Souls of Priests and Religious, and immerse them in My unfathomable mercy. It was they who gave me strength to endure My bitter Passion. Through them as through channels My mercy flows out upon mankind.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, from whom comes all that is good, increase Your grace in men and women consecrated to Your service, that they may perform worthy works of mercy; and that all who see them may glorify the Father of Mercy who is in heaven.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the company of chosen ones in Your vineyard—upon the souls of priests and religious; and endow them with the strength of Your blessing. For the love of the Heart of Your Son in which they are enfolded, impart to them Your power and light, that they may be able to guide others in the way of salvation and with one voice sing praise to Your boundless mercy for ages without end. Amen.”

The Third Day: Mercy for the Devout and Faithful

For the third day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all the faithful. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me all Devout and Faithful Souls, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. These souls brought me consolation on the Way of the Cross. They were a drop of consolation in the midst of an ocean of bitterness.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, from the treasury of Your mercy, You impart Your graces in great abundance to each and all. Receive us into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart and never let us escape from It. We beg this grace of You by that most wondrous love for the heavenly Father with which Your Heart burns so fiercely.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon faithful souls, as upon the inheritance of Your Son. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, grant them Your blessing and surround them with Your constant protection. Thus may they never fail in love or lose the treasure of the holy faith, but rather, with all the hosts of Angels and Saints, may they glorify Your boundless mercy for endless ages. Amen.”

The Fourth Day: Mercy for Those Who Do Not Believe in God and Do Not Know Christ

For the fourth day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all those who do not believe in God and those who do not know Christ. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me those who do not believe in God and those who do not know Me, I was thinking also of them during My bitter Passion, and their future zeal comforted My Heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy.”

Prayer

“Most compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.”

The Fifth Day: Mercy for Those Who Have Separated Themselves from the Church

For the fifth day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all those who, while Christians, have separated themselves from the Roman Catholic Church. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me the Souls of those who have separated themselves from My Church, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. During My bitter Passion they tore at My Body and Heart, that is, My Church. As they return to unity with the Church My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son’s Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces by obstinately persisting in their errors. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which He underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen.”

The Sixth Day: Mercy for the Meek and Humble and for Little Children

For the sixth day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all little children and the meek and humble. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me the Meek and Humble Souls and the Souls of Little Children, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls most closely resemble My Heart. They strengthened Me during My bitter agony. I saw them as earthly Angels, who will keep vigil at My altars. I pour out upon them whole torrents of grace. I favor humble souls with My confidence.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, You yourself have said, ‘Learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart.’ Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart all meek and humble souls and the souls of little children. These souls send all heaven into ecstasy and they are the heavenly Father’s favorites. They are a sweet-smelling bouquet before the throne of God; God Himself takes delight in their fragrance. These souls have a permanent abode in Your Most Compassionate Heart, O Jesus, and they unceasingly sing out a hymn of love and mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon meek souls, upon humble souls, and upon little children who are enfolded in the abode which is the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls bear the closest resemblance to Your Son. Their fragrance rises from the earth and reaches Your very throne. Father of mercy and of all goodness, I beg You by the love You bear these souls and by the delight You take in them: Bless the whole world, that all souls together may sing out the praises of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.”

The Seventh Day: Mercy for Those Most Devoted to Christ’s Mercy

For the seventh day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all those most devoted to His mercy. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me the Souls who especially venerate and glorify My Mercy, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls sorrowed most over my Passion and entered most deeply into My spirit. They are living images of My Compassionate Heart. These souls will shine with a special brightness in the next life. Not one of them will go into the fire of hell. I shall particularly defend each one of them at the hour of death.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, whose Heart is Love Itself, receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who particularly extol and venerate the greatness of Your mercy. These souls are mighty with the very power of God Himself. In the midst of all afflictions and adversities they go forward, confident of Your mercy; and united to You, O Jesus, they carry all mankind on their shoulders. These souls will not be judged severely, but Your mercy will embrace them as they depart from this life.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls who glorify and venerate Your greatest attribute, that of Your fathomless mercy, and who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls are a living Gospel; their hands are full of deeds of mercy, and their hearts, overflowing with joy, sing a canticle of mercy to You, O Most High! I beg You O God: Show them Your mercy according to the hope and trust they have placed in You. Let there be accomplished in them the promise of Jesus, who said to them that during their life, but especially at the hour of death, the souls who will venerate this fathomless mercy of His, He, Himself, will defend as His glory. Amen.”

The Eighth Day: Mercy for the Souls in Purgatory

For the eighth day of the Divine Mercy novena, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all the souls in Purgatory. She recorded these words of Christ: “Today bring to Me the Souls who are in the prison of Purgatory, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice.”

Prayer

“Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded: Manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen.”

The Ninth Day: Mercy for Souls Who Have Become Lukewarm

For the ninth day, Christ asked Saint Faustina to pray for the sake of all the souls who have become lukewarm in their belief. She recorded the following words of Our Lord in her diary: “Today bring to Me the Souls who have become Lukewarm, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. These souls wound My Heart most painfully. My soul suffered the most dreadful loathing in the Garden of Olives because of lukewarm souls. They were the reason I cried out: ‘Father, take this cup away from Me, if it be Your will.’ For them, the last hope of salvation is to run to My mercy.”

Prayer

“Most compassionate Jesus, You are Compassion Itself. I bring lukewarm souls into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart. In this fire of Your pure love, let these tepid souls who, like corpses, filled You with such deep loathing, be once again set aflame. O Most Compassionate Jesus, exercise the omnipotence of Your mercy and draw them into the very ardor of Your love, and bestow upon them the gift of holy love, for nothing is beyond Your power.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon lukewarm souls who are nonetheless enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Father of Mercy, I beg You by the bitter Passion of Your Son and by His three-hour agony on the Cross: Let them, too, glorify the abyss of Your mercy. Amen.”

Inflame your heart with God’s love with this prayer

Jesus said, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Luke 12:49).

When Jesus said to his disciples that he wished to “set the earth on fire,” one interpretation has always been that he wanted to set our hearts on fire with his love.Above all, Jesus wants us to fall in love with him and to be in an intimate relationship with him. While we do not have romantic feelings for Jesus, we should strive to love Jesus from our heart and not simply from our mind.

Here is a prayer adapted from the Golden Manual that can help in that regard, asking God in poetic language to inflame our hearts with his love.

O my Lord Jesus, O Fire that burns sweetly, and shines secretly, and consumes gently, take full possession of my whole heart. O King of kings, King of eternal glory, grant that I may hunger and thirst for you alone, sigh after you, and ardently desire to behold your countenance.

Grant, O my Lord, that, wholly filled with the sweetness of your love, and wholly set on fire with the flame of heavenly charity, I may delight in you with my whole heart, and from the deepest recesses of my inmost soul. May I love you, O sweet Lover; may I love you, O only salvation of my soul; may I love you, for you have first loved me!

O my own most compassionate Lord, write on the tablet of my heart the sweet memory of you, which no forgetfulness may ever erase, that I may ever burn with the desire of you, that I may be wholly set on fire with the flame of your love, and drowned in the deluge of your charity.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: The Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul (MONDAY, JUNE 29)

Apostles (First Century)

Their story

+ Simon, who was later given the name “Peter,” was a fisherman from Galilee.

+ Peter often acted as the spokesman of the Twelve and is especially remembered for his great statement of faith: “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” To this, Jesus responded that Peter was the “Rock” upon which Jesus would build the Church (cf. Matthew 16:17-19).

+ After the Resurrection of Jesus, Peter’s triple denial of Jesus is forgiven when Peter testifies to his love of Jesus three times (cf. John 21:15-17).

+ Following Pentecost, Peter was a leader of the Christian community in Jerusalem and eventually made his way to Antioch where, according to tradition, he served as bishop. Peter eventually made his way to Rome and was executed there around the year 64.

+ Saul of Tarsus was a faithful Jew who took part in the early persecution of the Church in Jerusalem. Following a spiritual encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus, Saul, now called Paul, became a missionary in largely non-Jewish regions. Assisted by Barnabas, Silas, Luke, Timothy, and others, Paul’s missionary journeys took him throughout the Middle East and into Asia and Europe.

+ Paul and Peter took part in the “Council of Jerusalem” which settled questions about receiving non-Jewish believers into the Church.

+ According to ancient tradition, Paul was beheaded in Rome around the year 64.

For reflection

“Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two men were one’ and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one.”—Saint Augustine of Hippo

Prayer

Grant, we pray, O Lord our God,

that we may be sustained

by the intercession of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul,

that, as through them you gave your Church

the foundations of her heavenly office,

so through them you may help her to eternal salvation.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
