Prayer Before Holy Communion

0

from the Byzantine Liturgy

O Lord, I believe and profess that you are truly Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. Accept me as a partaker of your mystical supper, O Son of God; for I will not reveal your mystery to your enemies, nor will I give you a kiss as did Judas, but like the thief I confess to you: Remember me, O Lord, when you shall come into your kingdom. Remember me, O Master, when you shall come into your kingdom. Remember me, O Holy One, when you shall come into your kingdom. May the partaking of your Holy Mysteries, O Lord, be not for my judgment or condemnation, but for the healing of soul and body. O Lord, I also believe and profess that this, which I am about to receive, is truly your most precious Body and your life-giving Blood, which, I pray, make me worthy to receive for the remission of all my sins and for life everlasting. Amen.

A Prayer Before Mass

O God, Father of mercy, with your sanctifying Spirit you have illumined Blessed Mary of Jesus and have made of her in this world an untiring promotor of an authentic participation of the faithful in the celebration of the Eucharist. It is now that we ask you to grant through her intercession the union of our own sacrifice with the unique sacrifice of Christ in order to participate in full awareness, devoutly and actively in the liturgy of the Holy Mass. Grant us also through the intercession of Mary of Jesus the particular grace for which we ask you in faith and love. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer Before Meditation

My Lord and my God, I firmly believe that you are here; that you see me, that your hear me. I adore you with profound reverence; I beg your pardon for my sins, and the grace to make this time of prayer fruitful. My Immaculate Mother, Saint Joseph my father and lord, my guardian angel, intercede for me. Amen.

Prayer Before Preaching

0

by Saint Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109)

Grant to me, O Lord, an eloquence most gentle and wise, that for Thy good gifts I may not be puffed up and extolled above my brothers. Place in my mouth, I beseech Thee, through Thy Holy Spirit, words of consolation, edification, and exhortation, that I may encourage the good to better things, and by word and example bring back to the threshold of Thy righteousness those who walk apart from Thee. May the words which Thou dost give to Thy servant be as keen darts and as burning arrows to penetrate the minds of those that hear, and inflame them with fear and love of Thee. Amen.

Prayer Before Serving at Mass

Heavenly Father, as I prepare to assist You at Your altar, I declare my faith in You. At this Mass, keep me from distractions. Let me remember that in assisting the priest I am assisting Jesus in offering You the merits of His passion and death. I thank You for allowing me the opportunity to give my service to You. At this Mass, I join with your Priest in offering You the sacred Body and Blood of my Savior, Jesus Christ, Your Son. May my sharing the Divine Food in Holy Communion bring me eternal salvation. Amen.

Prayer Before Sleep

by Saint Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787)

Jesus Christ my God, I adore you and thank you for all the graces you have given me this day. I offer you my sleep and all the moments of this night, and I ask you to keep me from sin. I put myself within your sacred side and under the mantle of our Lady. Let your holy angels stand about me and keep me in peace. And let your blessing be upon me. Amen.

Prayer Before Study

by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)

Creator past all telling, you have appointed from the treasures of your wisdom the hierarchies of angels, disposing them in wondrous order above the bright heavens, and have so beautifully set out all parts of the universe. You we call the true fount of wisdom and the noble origin of all things. Be pleased to shed on the darkness of mind in which I was born, the twofold beam of your light and warmth to dispel my ignorance and sin. You make eloquent the tongues of children. Then instruct my speech and touch my lips with graciousness. Make me keen to understand, quick to learn, able to remember; make me delicate to interpret and ready to speak. Guide my going in and going forward, and lead home my going forth. You are true God and true man, and live for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer Before the Crucifix

by Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

O most High and glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart. Give me, Lord, a firm faith, sure hope, perfect love, profound humility–the sign and knowledge so that I may carry out all of your commandments.

Prayer Before Writing or Preaching

by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)

O Creator of the universe, who has set the stars in the heavens and causes the sun to rise and set, shed the light of your wisdom into the darkness of my mind. Fill my thoughts with the loving knowledge of you, that I may bring your light to others. Just as you can make even babies speak your truth, instruct my tongue and guide my pen to convey the wonderful glory of the Gospel. Make my intellect sharp, my memory clear, and my words eloquent, so that I may faithfully interpret the mysteries which you have revealed.
