Pope adds ‘Mother of Hope’ to Litany of Mary, along with two other new titles

Comfort of Migrants and Mother of Mercy will take their place among the other titles of devotion given to Jesus’ mother.

The ancient Litany of Loreto, featuring a list of devotional titles of the Virgin Mary, will now have three new invocations, as Pope Francis has decided to include: “Mother of Mercy,” “Mother of Hope,” and “Comfort of Migrants.”While some spiritual writers claim that the litany can be traced back to St. Gregory the Great or even to the Apostles, most historians believe that the Litany of Loreto was composed in the late 15th to early 16th century.

The new titles were announced in a letter June 20 from Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, to the bishops’ conferences around the world.

The letter includes the placement in the litany for the three new titles:

“Mater misericordiae” (Mother of mercy) should be placed after “Mater Ecclesiae” (Mother of the Church)

“Mater spei” (Mother of hope) should follow “Mater divinae gratiae” (Mother of divine grace)

“Solacium migrantium” (Comfort of migrants) should follow “Refugium peccatorum” (Refuge of sinners)

It is believed that the litany was initially adopted at the miraculous shrine in Loreto, Italy, where tradition claims the original house of the Virgin Mary was transported. And from there, it spread around the world.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… St. Aloysius Gonzaga (Patron Saint of Youth)

Jesuit Scholastic (1568-1591)

His life

+ Aloysius was born in Castiglione, Italy, and was the eldest son and heir of the powerful Gonzaga family.

+ A pious child, Aloysius wanted to please God and seek God’s will above all things. After years of discernment, he entered into a fierce battle with his father who refused to allow Aloysius to fulfill his vocation to enter the Society of Jesus.

+ After great suffering and prayer, Aloysius received the necessary permission and renounced his title and inheritance, entering the Jesuits in Rome.

+ Known for his sense of self-discipline, modesty, and commitment to seeking God’s will in all things, Aloysius was well-liked by his superiors and religious brothers. It was his desire to go and serve in the Society’s missions in Asia.

+ Aloysius contracted a virulent form of plague in March 1591 after picking up a dying man from the street and carrying him to a hospital. Aloysius died after a long and painful illness on June 21, at the age of 23.

+ Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was canonized in 1726. Since the time of his canonization, he has been honored as the patron saint of youth and, more recently, of those suffering from HIV/AIDS and their caregivers.

For prayer and reflection

“So what did Aloysius do with his lovely light? From surface facts, he did not contribute to world peace or environmental causes. He did nothing to save the dolphins or the Lombardy poplar or promote democratic government. Aloysius’ mission was in being rather than doing, and in following God’s will.”—Ethel Pochocki

Prayer

Father of love, giver of all good things, in Saint Aloysius you combined remarkable innocence with the spirit of penance. By the help of his prayers may we who have not followed his innocence follow his example of penance. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING for SUNDAY, JUNE 21

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord is our light and our help:

to him do we pray in trust.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

In the hour of trial, Jesus, plead for me,

Lest by base denial I depart from thee.

When thou seest me waver, with a look recall,

Nor for fear or favor suffer me to fall.

With forbidden pleasures would this vain world charm,

Or its sordid treasures spread to work me harm,

Bring to my remembrance sad Gethsemane,

Or, in darker semblance, cross-crowned Calvary.

Should thy mercy send me sorrow, toil and woe,

Or should pain attend me on my path below,

Grant that I may never fail thy hand to see;

Grant that I may ever cast my care on thee.

When my last hour cometh, fraught with strife and pain,

When my dust returneth to the dust again,

On thy truth relying, through that mortal strife,

Jesus, take me, dying, to eternal life.

PSALM 27:1-5

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. (Mt 10:28)

Fear is a universal experience. Sometimes fear of other people, or their disapproval, leads us to act against our religious beliefs. Jesus cautions us to put our fear where it belongs: we should fear the loss of eternal life far more than we fear the threats of human beings, mortal and accountable like ourselves.

The Lord is my light and my help;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

before whom shall I shrink?

When evil-doers draw near

to devour my flesh,

it is they, my enemies and foes,

who stumble and fall.

Though an army encamp against me

my heart would not fear.

Though war break out against me

even then would I trust.

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,

for this I long,

to live in the house of the Lord,

all the days of my life,

to savor the sweetness of the Lord,

to behold his temple.

For there he keeps me safe in his tent

in the day of evil.

He hides me in the shelter of his tent,

on a rock he sets me safe.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 51:6c-8)

My salvation shall remain forever/ and my justice shall never be dismayed./ Hear me, you who know justice,/ you people who have my teaching at heart:/ Fear not the reproach of men,/ be not dismayed at their revilings./ They shall be like a garment eaten by moths,/ like wool consumed by grubs;/ But my justice shall remain forever/ and my salvation, for all generations.

It is I who say to you, “Fear not,/ I will help you.”
(Is 41:13)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Fear not, my children; call out to God! (Bar 4:27a)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

In time of trial, let us pray:

R/You are the stronghold of our life!

– strengthen us to do what is right in your eyes: R/

When we tempt others to disobey you in order to please us:

– forgive us and grant us conversion of heart: R/

When we suppress the voice of conscience because other voices appeal to our self-interest:

– grant us clarity of mind and purity of heart: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God of power and might, you shield us from all harm by the power of your redeeming love. Protect us in our weakness; make us strong in our faith; keep us in your paths, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING for SATURDAY, JUNE 20

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Lord is with us like a mighty champion:

let us turn to him with confidence and love.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

The waves were crashing all around.

I feared. No helper came.

My heart, awaking, came unbound:

I called upon God’s name.

How swiftly was I borne above

The terror of the wave!

The Lord unfolded me in love.

“Behold!” He said, “I save!”

What though the waves are growing strong?

His voice is stronger still.

What though the stormy nights are long

For those who do His will?

The Lord is standing on the shore.

His eyes are on the sea.

He lives to safeguard and restore

At length, tranquility.

PSALM 31:2-6, 8b-9, 12ab, 15-16

The Lord is with me, like a mighty champion:/ my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. (Jer 20:11)

Like Jeremiah, we may sometimes find ourselves beset on every side by hostility from people or circumstances too great for us to overcome. With Jeremiah, let us entrust ourselves to God’s all-loving and all-powerful protection.

In you, O Lord, I take refuge.

Let me never be put to shame.

In your justice, set me free,

hear me and speedily rescue me.

Be a rock of refuge for me,

a mighty stronghold to save me,

for you are my rock, my stronghold.

For your name’s sake, lead me and guide me.

Release me from the snares they have hidden

for you are my refuge, Lord.

Into your hands I commend my spirit.

It is you who will redeem me, Lord.

You who have seen my affliction

and taken heed of my soul’s distress,

have not handed me over to the enemy,

but set my feet at large.

In the face of all my foes

I am a reproach,

an object of scorn to my neighbors

and of fear to my friends.

But as for me, I trust in you, Lord,

I say: “You are my God.

My life is in your hands, deliver me

from the hands of those who hate me.”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 35:3-4)

Strengthen the hands that are feeble,/ make firm the knees that are weak,/ Say to those whose hearts are frightened:/ Be strong, fear not!/ Here is your God,/ he comes with vindication;/ With divine recompense/ he comes to save you.

Have no fear before them,/ because I am with you

to deliver you, says the Lord. (Jer 1:8)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I command you: be firm and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go. (Jos 1:9)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

R/In you, O Lord, we take refuge.

When circumstances threaten to overwhelm us:

– let us put our trust in you: R/

– let us love even those we fear: R/

When all our resources fail us:

– let us remember that your love will never fail: R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

May we receive a blessing from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings we have come for refuge. Amen. (cf. Ru 2:12)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Mary is the immaculate lily,

who brought forth Christ the imperishable rose.

O holy Mother of God,

immaculate sheep,

who gave birth to Christ the Lamb,

the Word incarnate from you;

O most holy Virgin,

who have astonished the hosts of angels;

stupendous is the miracle in heaven:

a woman clothed with the sun

carrying in her arms the Light.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING for TUESDAY, JUNE 16

Prayer for the Evening

Let our prayer arise before God like incense,

the raising of our hands in prayer

like the evening sacrifice!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

As the darkness draweth nigh,

Daylight fadeth from the sky:

Father, unto thee we call,

Thou who rulest over all.

Light that cannot know decline,

Come within our souls to shine!

All our hearts to thee are known;

Come, possess them as thine own.

Thou alone these hearts can fill,

And their deepest yearning still.

Love that never groweth old,

In thy love our lives enfold!

May the virtue of our lives

Unto thee as incense rise,

When each joy and pain shall be

Joined with Paschal Mystery.

May our gift to thee arise

As an evening sacrifice.

PSALM 141:1-5a, 8

May the spoken words of my mouth,/ the thoughts of my heart,/ win favor in your sight, O Lord. (Ps 19:15)

We can use our treasured capacity for speech to offer prayer, as fragrant as incense before God, or to offer hurt to another.

I have called to you, Lord; hasten to help me!

Hear my voice when I cry to you.

Let my prayer arise before you like incense,

the raising of my hands like an evening oblation.

Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth;

keep watch, O Lord, at the door of my lips!

Do not turn my heart to things that are wrong,

to evil deeds with men who are sinners.

Never allow me to share in their feasting.

If a good man strikes or reproves me it is kindness;

but let the oil of the wicked not anoint my head.

To you, Lord God, my eyes are turned:

in you I take refuge; spare my soul!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Revelation 8:3-4)

Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne. The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel.

Each of the elders held a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the holy ones. (Rv 5:8)

Day 7 novena to the Sacred Heart: With Pope Francis through Jesus’ 5 wounds

Seventh petition: Jesus, allow me to see you praying for me before the Father

Day 7: Jesus, allow me to see you praying for me before the Father. Jesus, thank you for praying for me before the Father.“[It is important] to carefully consider this truth, this reality: in this moment Jesus is praying for me. I can go forward in life because I have a lawyer who defends me. If I am guilty, I have many sins.” Jesus “is a good defense attorney and will speak about me to the Father.” And just “to highlight that he is the first lawyer, he tells us: I will send you another Paraclete, another lawyer. But he is the first. And he prays for me, and in the prayer of intercession that today, after his ascension into heaven, Jesus says for each of us.” In this way, “when — [whether] at church, at home with our families — we are in need or have problems, we say ‘pray for me,’ we have to say the same to Jesus: ‘Lord, pray for me.’”

And today how does Jesus pray? “I believe that he does not talk too much with the Father — he loves,” the Pope responded. He then added: “But there is one thing that Jesus does today, I am certain that he does: he shows his wounds to the Father. And Jesus, with his wounds, prays for us as if to say ‘Father, this is the price! Help them, protect them, they are your children whom I have saved.’”

Otherwise, advised Pope Francis, “one would not understand why Jesus, after the Resurrection, had this glorious, beautiful body: there were no bruises, there were no cuts from the scourging — all were healed, but the five wounds were there.”

And “Jesus wanted to take them to heaven to pray for us, to show the Father the price,” as if to say: “This is the price, do not leave them alone now, help them!”

From Santa Marta: 6/3/2014

We are used to praying to Jesus so that He might give us one grace or another, that He might help us, but we are not accustomed to contemplating Jesus who shows the Father His wounds, Jesus the intercessor, the mediator, Jesus who prays for us. …

Let us think about this a little, and let us turn to Jesus, grateful that He prays for us. Jesus prays for every one of us. Jesus is the intercessor. Jesus wanted to take His wounds with Him to show His Father the price of our salvation. We need to have more confidence; more than in our own prayers, in Jesus’ prayer.

Santa Marta homily, April 23, 2020

Conclude by praying five Our Fathers, as you contemplate each of Jesus’ five wounds. This is the invitation of Pope Francis:

Do not forget this: look at the crucifix, but to look within it. There is this beautiful devotion to pray an Our Father for each one of the five wounds: when we pray that Our Father, we seek to enter through Jesus’ wounds inside, inside, right to His heart. And there we will learn the great wisdom of Christ’s mystery, the great wisdom of the cross.

Angelus: 3/18/2018

Background on Pope Francis’ devotion to the Five Wounds:

With repeated references in homilies and meditations, Pope Francis has revealed his special devotion to the Five Wounds of Jesus.

The Holy Father sees in this devotion a path to arrive to the Sacred Heart, and there to find that this heart is the beating heart of Divine Mercy.

He also sees it as a path to draw close to suffering humanity, and to recognize that Jesus has taken his wounds to the Father in order to pray for his wounded brothers and sisters.

Let us meditate on the Five Wounds with Pope Francis as a novena in preparation for the Feast of the Sacred Heart, which this year falls on June 19.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING for TUESDAY, JUNE 16

Prayer for the Morning

Glorious is God’s name over all the earth:

come, let us sing praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Love divine, all loves excelling,

Joy of heaven to earth come down;

Fix in us thy humble dwelling;

All thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, thou art all compassion,

Pure unbounded love thou art;

Visit us with thy salvation;

Enter every trembling heart.

Finish, then, thy new creation;

Pure and spotless let us be.

Let us see thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in thee;

Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before thee,

Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

PSALM 8

Unless you become like little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of God. (cf. Mt 18:3)

Only the childlike retain the child’s gift of wonder. Wondering, we forget ourselves entirely, lost in what has provoked our awe. Wonder is the wellspring of praise. We have reason for our praise: we are God’s children, made in his image.

How great is your name, O Lord our God,

through all the earth!

Your majesty is praised above the heavens;

on the lips of children and of babes

you have found praise to foil your enemy,

to silence the foe and the rebel.

When I see the heavens, the work of your hands,

The moon and the stars which you arranged,

what is man that you should keep him in mind,

mortal man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him little less than a god;

with glory and honor you crowned him,

gave him power over the works of your hand,

put all things under his feet.

All of them, sheep and cattle,

yes, even the savage beasts,

birds of the air, and fish

that make their way through the waters.

How great is your name, O Lord our God,

through all the earth!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Genesis 1:27-28, 31a)

God created man in his image;/ in the divine image he created him;/ male and female he created them.

God blessed them, saying to them: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.” God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.

What are we that you should care for us? (cf. Ps 8:5)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

To which of the angels did God ever say:/ “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”? (Heb 1:5)

INTERCESSIONS

Let us praise the God whose mystery fills the universe with wonder:

R/We praise and exalt you above all for ever!

Blessed are you, O Lord our God; you created all things and pronounced them good:

– fill us with reverence for the works of your hands. R/

Blessed is your holy and glorious name; you created male and female in your image:

– fill us with reverence for our brothers and sisters. R/

Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven; you reign over all creation:

– fill us with reverence for you, who alone are God. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

O God, you are over all, in all, beyond all. Open our eyes to see the wonders that surround us; open our hearts to know the wonders of our brothers and sisters; open our lips to sing your praise. Restore all peoples in your image, who is our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING for MONDAY, JUNE 15

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord is just and loves justice:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

We sing for all the unsung saints,

That countless, nameless throng,

Who kept the faith and passed it on

With hope steadfast and strong

Through all the daily griefs and joys

No chronicles record,

Forgetful of their lack of fame,

But mindful of their Lord.

So we take heart from unknown saints

Bereft of earthly fame,

Those faithful ones who have received

A more enduring name:

For they reveal true blessing comes

When we our pride efface

And offer back our lives to be

The vessels of God’s grace.

PSALM 43

I know, O my God, that you put hearts to the test and that you take pleasure in uprightness. (1 Chr 29:17)

Violence often seems to succeed where goodness fails to accomplish much. Yet the power that endures is the power of the Gospel. The world is full of “unsung saints” who achieve no public success but who persevere in living upright lives that accomplish the greatest of goals: to see and dwell with God always.

Defend me, O God, and plead my cause

against a godless nation.

From deceitful and cunning men

rescue me, O God.

Since you, O God, are my stronghold,

why have you rejected me?

Why do I go mourning

oppressed by the foe?

O send forth your light and your truth;

let these be my guide.

Let them bring me to your holy mountain

to the place where you dwell.

And I will come to the altar of God,

the God of my joy.

My redeemer, I will thank you on the harp,

O God, my God.

Why are you cast down, my soul,

why groan within me?

Hope in God; I will praise him still,

my savior and my God.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Jeremiah 9:23)

Let him who glories, glory in this,/ that in his prudence he knows me,/ Knows that I, the Lord, bring about kindness,/ justice and uprightness on the earth;/ For with such am I pleased, says the Lord.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,/ for they will be satisfied. (Mt 5:6)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The righteous shall hold to his way,/ and he who has clean hands increase in strength. (Jb 17:9)

God calls us in Christ to worship him in holiness and righteousness all our days.

R/Make us holy, O Lord!

You are the refuge of all who put their trust in you:

– protect the integrity of those who seek to live righteously. R/

You see the depths of our hearts:

– fan into flame our love for kindness, justice, and uprightness. R/

You show us your face in the goodness of those who live the Gospel:

– strengthen us to encourage one another in following your ways. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever! Amen.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Mary is the immaculate lily,

who brought forth Christ the imperishable rose.

O holy Mother of God,

immaculate sheep,

who gave birth to Christ the Lamb,

the Word incarnate from you;

O most holy Virgin,

who have astonished the hosts of angels;

stupendous is the miracle in heaven:

a woman clothed with the sun

carrying in her arms the Light.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Day 6 novena to the Sacred Heart: With Pope Francis through Jesus’ 5 wounds

Sixth petition: That I may love you Jesus, by loving my brothers and sisters

Day 6: That I may love you Jesus, by loving my brothers and sisters

We are among the wounds of Jesus, as you have said, Madam. …

However, it is interesting: When Jesus resurrected, he was very beautiful. He had neither bruises nor wounds on his body… nothing! He was even more beautiful! He wanted only to keep his wounds and to carry them with him to Heaven. Jesus’ wounds are here and in Heaven before the Father. We heal the wounds of Jesus here and he, from Heaven, shows us his wounds and says to us all, to all of us: “I am waiting for you!” Let it be so!

With sick and disabled children in Assisi: 10/4/2013

On the altar, we worship the flesh of Jesus; in these our brothers and sisters, we encounter the wounds of Jesus.

To the sick in Fatima: 5/13/2017

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING for MONDAY, JUNE 15

Prayer for the Morning

God is the giver of all good gifts:

come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Eternal maker of all things,

You govern everything as King:

The sea, the sun, the heav’nly vault,

And pay each one for good or fault.

To ruination you condemn

The arrogant and all like them;

They shall receive what is their due,

But help us, Lord, who call on you.

With ever-growing confidence

We pray for heavenly defense:

Our champions in armies send,

To us, through them, may grace extend.

O may they visit, cleanse, inspire,

And gently teach us to aspire

To noble paths of good and right,

And may they end the demons’ might.

O angels’ Glory, safely lead;

By paths secure make us proceed.

Give us these guards, your gifts of grace,

That we may come to see your face.

PSALM 1

I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then. (Dt 30:19)

Beside the river that watered the garden of Eden, God offered the first couple the choice between

obedient love and self-seeking death. The choice remains ours to make each day.

Happy indeed is the man

who follows not the counsel of the wicked;

nor lingers in the way of sinners

nor sits in the company of scorners,

but whose delight is the law of the Lord

and who ponders his law day and night.

He is like a tree that is planted

beside the flowing waters,

that yields its fruit in due season

and whose leaves shall never fade;

and all that he does shall prosper.

Not so are the wicked, not so!

For they like winnowed chaff

shall be driven away by the wind.

When the wicked are judged they shall not stand,

nor find room among those who are just;

for the Lord guards the way of the just

but the way of the wicked leads to doom.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 15:14-17)

When God, in the beginning, created man,/ he made him subject to his own free choice./ If you choose you can keep the commandments;/ it is loyalty to do his will./ There are set before you fire and water;/ to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand./ Before man are life and death,/ whichever he chooses shall be given him.

Choose life!

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. (Jn 15:12)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

To God, the giver of life, we pray:

R/Teach us to do your will, O Lord.

At home and at work:

– open our eyes to the demands of love. R/

In business and pleasure:

– grant us the wisdom to choose as you would have us choose. R/

In making decisions for the unborn, the aging, the dying:

– strengthen us to choose life. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

O Lord our God, you have replanted on our earth the garden lost in Eden, and you have sent a new Gardener to till the soil plowed by the wood of the cross. He who is both the farmer and the seed has watered the earth with his life’s blood, shed for our redemption. Make us grow in his likeness by the power of his word dwelling in our hearts. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
