Saint Raphael, a powerful healer for anyone suffering right now

The archangel’s name in Hebrew means “Divine Healer.”

Among the three archangels named in the Bible, St. Raphael is probably the least known. This is likely due to the fact that St. Raphael is only found in the Old Testament (and there only in a book not considered canonical by Jews or Protestant Christians), while Gabriel and Michael feature prominently in the New Testament.

Traditionally, Raphael had a separate feast celebrated on October 24, though recently his feast was combined with those of the other two archangels on September 29.

St. Raphael is a powerful intercessor whom we should not forget, especially during times when we are most in need of healing.

Raphael is found in the Book of Tobit, where he reveals himself as a healer of mind, body and spirit. The first part of the biblical story narrates the life of Tobit, a righteous Jewish man who took upon himself the burial of the dead even when it was forbidden by his Assyrian captors. Tobit became blind after bird droppings fell into his eyes. The blindness lasted for several years and sent Tobit into a deep anguish, creating in him a desire to die.

At the same time there was a woman named Sarah who was tormented by a demon. She married seven times, but each time her bridegroom was killed by the demon on their wedding night, before the marriage could be consummated. She too was deeply depressed and wished for death.

St. Raphael was sent to both. He brought about their healing by accompanying Tobit’s son, Tobias, on a journey to find a special kind of fish liver with healing properties. Raphael was disguised as Tobias’ travel guide, and in this tradition he is often invoked by pilgrims.

On the way back home, Raphael and Tobias stopped at the home of Tobit’s kinsmen — the parents of Sarah. Tobias and Sarah fell in love, and on their wedding night Tobias’ pledge of chaste love, stirred by Raphael’s angelic power, defeated the demon.

Returning home with his bride, Tobias laid the fish liver on Tobit’s eyes and his blindness was healed. At the marriage feast of Tobias and Sarah, the family turned to thank Raphael, who only then revealed himself as an archangel.

The word Raphael in Hebrew can be rendered as, “God heals,” “Divine Healer,” or “Remedy of God.” His angelic mission on earth is to heal, which is very important for those suffering in any way.

Below is a prayer to St. Raphael for any intention you may have, especially for anyone you know who may be hurting right now. In light of recent events, all of us should pray for the healing of our country, and all those suffering in mind, body or spirit.

Glorious Archangel St. Raphael, great prince of the heavenly court, you are illustrious for your gifts of wisdom and grace. You are a guide of those who journey by land or sea or air, consoler of the afflicted, and refuge of sinners. I beg you, assist me in all my needs and in all the sufferings of this life, as once you helped the young Tobias on his travels. Because you are the “medicine of God” I humbly pray you to heal the many infirmities of my soul and the ills that afflict my body. I especially ask of you the favor (here mention your special intention), and the great grace of purity to prepare me to be the temple of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer to St. Matthew during tax season

Who better to turn to then St. Matthew, the tax collector?

Taxes are a normal part of life in most parts of the world and when it comes that time of the year, it can often lead to an increase in stress and anxiety. While there are various practical things that can be done to minimize stress, prayer should always be one of those things.

God wants to be active in our lives, especially when it comes to finances! He is ready to help us in our need, but sometimes we simply need to be honest and ask for that help.

One powerful intercessor in this regard is St. Matthew, the tax collector. He was one of Jesus’ original 12 apostles and is known as the patron saint of bankers and tax collectors (and all things finance related). Here is a short prayer from the Roman Missal that asks for his intercession and that we follow in his footsteps.

O God, who with untold mercy were pleased to choose as an Apostle Saint Matthew, the tax collector, grant that, sustained by his example and intercession, we may merit to hold firm in following you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

St. John Bosco’s prayer to the Virgin Mary against demonic spirits

0

Mary, “you are terrifying as an army in battle array.”

St. John Bosco was a holy Italian priest, the recipient of many supernatural visions from God. In particular, he once saw a vision of the Church in the midst of a great trial, buffeted by many enemies.

However, in the vision, as long as the Church was tethered between the pillar of Mary, Help of Christians, and the pillar of the Eucharist, the Church would survive. He wrote, “Only two things can save us in such a grave hour: devotion to Mary and frequent Communion. Let us do our very best to use these two means and have others use them everywhere.”

Below is a prayer attributed to St. John Bosco directed to Mary, Help of Christians, that reflects this belief and places a person within the powerful protection of the Virgin Mary against all evil forces acting in the world.

O Mary, powerful Virgin, you are the mighty and powerful protector of the Church; you are the marvelous help of Christians; you are terrible as an army in battle array; you alone have destroyed every heresy in the whole world.

In the midst of our anguish, our struggles, and our distresses, defend us from the power of the enemy and at the hour of our death, receive our souls in paradise. Amen.

Set your heart on fire with God’s love with this prayer

0

Written by St. Gertrude the Great, this prayer begs God to set your heart on fire.

Before St. Margaret Mary Alacoque popularized devotion to the Sacred Heart, St. Gertrude the Great received her own visions of the Sacred Heart that prepared the way for the devotion several centuries later.

In one vision Jesus invited her, with St. John the Apostle, to lay her head upon his heart. She heard the beating of Jesus’ heart and greatly rejoiced at being so close to the source of divine love.

St. Gertrude composed one of the first prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which continues to be a favorite prayer of many, asking God to inflame one’s own heart with the fire of God’s love.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of Love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary. O my adorable and loving Savior, consume my heart with the burning fire with which Yours is aflame. Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love. Let my heart be united with Yours. Let my will be conformed to Yours in all things. May Your Will be the rule of all my desires and actions. Amen.

Prayer to protect against the Wuhan coronavirus

May it do no more harm …

Our Father, we trustingly pray to you, asking
that the Wuhan coronavirus may do no more harm,
that the epidemic may be swiftly gotten under control,
and that you restore the health of those affected
and peace to the places where the virus has arrived.

Welcome into your kingdom
the people who have died from this illness,
and comfort their families.

Sustain and protect the healthcare personnel who are fighting it,
and inspire and bless those working to control it.

Lord Jesus, doctor of our bodies and souls,
we feel impotent
in the face of this international health emergency,
but we trust in You.

Give us peace and health.
Mother Mary, protect us and continue to take care of us,
and lead us through your love to your Son, Jesus.

Amen.

Put your life in order with this prayer by St. Thomas Aquinas

0

If you are feeling disorganized, here is the perfect prayer to bring better order to your life.

Establishing order in our lives isn’t always very easy. This can be especially difficult when children are added to the mix. Whatever the case may be, living in a disorganized way can often lead to greater anxiety and fewer feelings of peace in the soul.

St. Thomas Aquinas is well known for his amazing work in organizing the beliefs of the Catholic Church into his Summa Theologiae. He also wrote a powerful prayer that he reportedly prayed every day, usually entitled, “For Ordering a Life Wisely.”

It is a lengthy prayer, but it is filled with great wisdom and is a cry out to God, asking him to help bring order into your life where you need it most.

O merciful God, grant that I may desire ardently, search prudently, recognize truly, and
bring to perfect completion whatever is pleasing to You for the praise and glory of Your
name.

Put my life in order, O my God.

Grant that I may know what You require me to do.

Bestow upon me the power to accomplish Your will, as is necessary and fitting for the
salvation of my soul.

Grant to me, O Lord my God, that I may not falter in times of prosperity or adversity, so
that I may not be exalted in the former, nor dejected in the latter.

May I not rejoice in anything unless it leads me to You; may I not be saddened by
anything unless it turns me from You.

May I desire to please no one, nor fear to displease anyone, but You.

May all transitory things, O Lord, be worthless to me and may all things eternal be ever
cherished by me.

May any joy without You be burdensome for me and may I not desire anything else
besides You.

May all work, O Lord, delight me when done for Your sake and may all repose not
centered in You be ever wearisome for me.

Grant unto me, my God, that I may direct my heart to You and that in my failures I may
ever feel remorse for my sins and never lose the resolve to change.

O Lord my God, make me submissive without protest, poor without discouragement,
chaste without regret, patient without complaint, humble without posturing, cheerful
without frivolity, mature without gloom, and quick-witted without flippancy.

O Lord my God, let me fear You without losing hope, be truthful without guile, do good
works without presumption, rebuke my neighbor without haughtiness, and—without
hypocrisy—strengthen him by word and example.

Give to me, O Lord God, a watchful heart, which no capricious thought can lure away
from You.
Give to me a noble heart, which no unworthy desire can debase.
Give to me a resolute heart, which no evil intention can divert.
Give to me a stalwart heart, which no tribulation can overcome.
Give to me a temperate heart, which no violent passion can enslave.
Give to me, O Lord my God, understanding of You, diligence in seeking You, wisdom in
finding You, discourse ever pleasing to You, perseverance in waiting for You, and
confidence in finally embracing You.

Grant that with Your hardships I may be burdened in reparation here, that Your benefits I may use in gratitude upon the way, that in Your joys I may delight by glorifying You in
the Kingdom of Heaven.

You Who live and reign, God, world without end. Amen.

Today, say a prayer for your spouse

Holy Spirit, fill the heart of my husband/wife with Your peace, so that through him/her he may show your love to our children. Give him/her the patience and the necessary wisdom to raise our children in purity and in faith. Help him/her to guide our children towards the right path and to encourage them to stay close to You. Amen

A prayer for a holy death

0

Now, while we have our senses and faculties, let us ask Jesus for his mercy.

While the advances of science and modern medicine can make us forget that we are mortal creatures, the Church exhorts us to remember that death will one day arrive, and we should live prepared for this day.

Here is a prayer to help:

Oh my crucified Jesus, I beg of You to receive the prayer I now offer Thee for my last moment, when, having desired a holy death, all my senses have failed me.

At my last moments when therefore my sweetest Jesus, my eyes, languid and sunken, can no longer look upon Thee, remember this loving look which I now turn to Thee, and have mercy on me.

When my lips, dried up, can no longer kiss Thy most sacred Wounds, remember these kisses which I now give Thee, and have mercy on me.

When my cold and numbed hands can no longer clasp Thy Cross, remember the times that I held Your Crucifix with love and devotion, and have mercy on me.

And when my tongue, swollen and immovable, can no longer speak, remember my present prayers, and have mercy on me.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I commend to you my soul.
Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on me, a sinner!
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in Thee.

Make your heart a furnace of love with this prayer

Offer every moment of the day to God with this powerful prayer.

Saints have continually stressed over the years how important it is to start your day off on the right foot. One of the most powerful ways to do this is by making a morning offering. There are countless prayers that can be said, or even those you compose in the silence of your heart.

However, if you not feeling inspired, here is one from the prayer book, The Catholic’s vade-mecum, that may help you give every moment of the day to God, asking God to make your heart a “furnace of love.

My God and my all, I most earnestly desire, by my every breath, every thought, every word, every desire, and my every movement of body and soul,—to tell thee a thousand times that I love thee more than life, or any thing in this world; and I offer and dedicate myself to thee, renewing my baptismal vows, together with the promises and resolutions of my life past.

I am thine, my God and my all; oh, make me so entirely and eternally. Above all, take my heart; extirpate from it all other affections, and make it for the future a furnace of the purest flames of thy most ardent love. Amen.

For Protection against danger, say this prayer to Our Lady

1

Say this prayer to our Blessed Virgin Mary in times of danger. c

God, who beholds us encompassed on all sides by dangers and miseries, grant us in your goodness, that the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God, your only Son, may defend us from the malignant enemy, and protect us against all adversity; that she may ever by prompt succor, deliver us from all necessities of soul and body; and by her powerful hand, lead us in safety to the kingdom of heaven: Through Jesus Christ your Son, Amen.
