Novena to St. Valentine, patron of engaged couples and happy marriages

0

Turn to the “saint of love” for spiritual help with your relationship.

It’s easy to forget in today’s world that Valentine’s Day is actually the Feast of St. Valentine, a Roman bishop during the 3rd century. A popular tradition surrounding St. Valentine is that he secretly married Christian couples and was eventually arrested and killed for his actions.

The story is one of the primary reasons why St. Valentine has been associated with lovers over the years. In particular he has been invoked for many centuries as the patron saint of engaged couples and happy marriages.

If you need some extra heavenly help for your relationship, consider praying a novena to St. Valentine, invoking his intercession over a period of nine days.

Pray this prayer with faith and trust in God, allowing him to have control over your love life.

O glorious advocate and protector,
St. Valentine,
look with pity upon our wants,
hear our requests,
attend to our prayers,
relieve by your intercession the miseries
under which we labor,
and obtain for us the divine blessing,
that we may be found worthy to join you
in praising the Almighty for all eternity:
through the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.

A short prayer of Pope St. Pius X that you can recite before getting to work

0

O Glorious Saint Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins; to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural inclinations; to work with thankfulness and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop by means of labor the gifts received from God; to work with order, peace, moderation and patience, never shrinking from weariness and trials; to work above all with purity of intention and detachment from self, keeping unceasingly before my eyes death and the account that I must give of time lost, talents unused, good omitted, and vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God.

All for Jesus, all through Mary, all after thy example, O Patriarch, Saint Joseph. Such shall be my watch-word in life and in death. Amen.

If you’re looking for a job, this prayer might help

Lord, help me find stable and suitable employment. And when I do find work, may I make good use of my time, regarding it as a treasure. Help me to grow in the virtue of order, doing my work punctually, attentively and steadfastly. May I develop a well-structured plan that will permit me to live my spiritual life, family life, professional life and social life in a balanced way. Amen.

If you are a procrastinator, here’s a prayer to the Holy Spirit (but pray it now!)

0

Come, O Holy Spirit!
Enlighten my mind to know your commands;
strengthen my heart against the snares of the enemy;
inflame my will …
I have heard your voice, and I don’t want to harden myself and resist, saying “Later …, tomorrow.”
Nunc coepi! Now I begin! In case there is no tomorrow for me.

O Spirit of truth and wisdom, Spirit of understanding and counsel, Spirit of joy and peace! I want whatever you want. I want because you want, I want however you want, I want whenever you want.

Prayer by St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer

Benedict XVI’s prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

0

“… you are the Smile of God!”

In 2008, Benedict XVI went to France in the context of the jubilee for the 150th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparition.

At a Mass for the sick, he presented his intentions to her with this part of the jubilee prayer:

Because you are the smile of God, the reflection of the light of Christ, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,

Because you chose Bernadette in her lowliness, because you are the morning star, the gate of heaven and the first creature to experience the resurrection,

Our Lady of Lourdes, with our brothers and sisters whose hearts and bodies are in pain, we pray to you!

Ask St. Joseph to be your protector with this prayer

Who better to protect us than the former guardian of the Child Jesus?

While God is always with us and stands by us as our ultimate protector, he also allows the saints and angels a unique role as intercessors, who can call upon his power to protect us in our time of need.

One of the most well-known and powerful protectors is St. Joseph, who was the guardian of Jesus when he was a child. He kept him safe from harm as long as he could, until he died a happy death in Jesus’ arms.

Here is a short prayer from the St. Joseph’s Manual (published in 1853) that chooses St. Joseph as your personal patron and protector, asking him to daily intercede for you, while also pledging your own commitment to prayer and purity.

O Holy Joseph, virgin spouse of the Virgin Mother of God, most glorious advocate of all such as are in danger, or in their last agony, and most faithful protector of all the servants of Mary, your dearest Spouse, I, N., in the presence of Jesus and Mary, do, from this moment, choose you for my powerful patron and advocate, in order that I may obtain the grace of a most happy death. I firmly resolve and purpose never to forsake you, nor to say or do any thing against your honor. Receive me, therefore, for your constant servant, and recommend me to the constant protection of Mary, your dearest Spouse, and to the everlasting mercies of Jesus my Savior. Assist me in all the actions of my life. I now offer them to the greater and everlasting glory of Jesus and Mary, as well as to your own.

Consecrate your marriage to the Sacred Heart of Jesus with this prayer

0

Firmly plant your marriage into the Heart of Jesus, protecting it from the assaults of the enemy.

As Venerable Patrick Peyton was known to say, “The family that prays together, stays together.” Prayer remains the best foundation a marriage can have and one way to further add protection is to consecrate it to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

By doing so, you will be uniting your hearts to his heart, creating an environment of peace and unity that can stand any trial. A marriage consecrated to Jesus’ heart will be protected when the devil tries to do whatever he can to disrupt it.

Below is a beautiful consecration prayer found in The Family for Families, published in 1947. When prayed in faith, it can strengthen a marriage and preserve it for many years to come.

O most Sacred Heart of Jesus, King and center of all hearts, dwell in our hearts and be our King; grant us by Your grace to love each other truly and chastely, even as You have loved Your spotless Bride, the Church, and have given Yourself up for her.

Bestow upon us that mutual love and Christian forbearance which are so highly acceptable in Your sight, and a mutual patience in bearing each other’s defects; for we are certain that no living creature is free from them. Do not permit even the slightest defect to mar that full and gentle harmony of spirit, the foundation of the mutual assistance in the many and varied hardships of life, that is the end for which woman was created and united inseparably to her husband.

** O Lord God, grant that between us there may reign a perpetual holy rivalry toward a life perfectly Christian, by virtue of which there may shine forth more and more clearly the divine image of Your mystic union with Your Holy Church, as You have deigned to imprint it upon us on the auspicious day of our being made one.

Grant, we beseech You, that our good example of Christian living may serve as a powerful inspiration to our children to conform their own lives to Your holy law; and finally, after this exile may we ascend into heaven, where by the help of Your grace, for which we earnestly pray, we may merit to be joined with our children forever and praise and bless You through everlasting ages, Amen.

(**If there are no children, the prayer from this point reads: O Lord God, grant that between us there may reign a perpetual holy rivalry toward a life perfectly Christian, by virtue of which there may shine forth more and more clearly the divine image of Your mystic union with Your Holy Church, as You have deigned to imprint it upon us on the auspicious day of our being made one, and so living, may both of us ascend into heaven, and merit to praise You and bless You forever. Amen.)

Pray this prayer to be a better spouse

Marriage isn’t always easy, and sometimes we need a little extra grace to better love our spouse.

While marriage is often very beautiful and enjoyable, sometimes we may have some bad days and have difficulty loving our spouse in the best way possible. Often it is because of some fault or weakness of our own, though occasionally it may be an external event that triggers a disagreement and casts a shadow over the relationship.

Whatever the situation may be, we are always in need of God’s divine grace. We often forget that marriage is a sacrament and through this sacrament, couples have access to God’s aid in a special way.

Here is a short prayer from the Golden Manual that asks God for help to be a better spouse and could be prayed on a daily basis, reminding us of our constant need to improve our marriage.

O God, bless our union, and enable us to live together in peace and love, in the faithful discharge of all our duties to you, and to each other. Deliver us from every evil temper, from every heedless action, which may in any way weaken or embitter the sacredness of that tie by which you have bound us together. Make me faithful and affectionate, ready to deny my own will and inclination in all things. Let not the trials and crosses of this life induce me to murmur, nor any earthly blessings cause me to forget you, the Author and Giver of all; but by patience and meekness, by prayer and thankfulness, may all things lead us together to eternal union with you, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Is life difficult right now? Pray to St. Agatha for perseverance

The heroic young woman was able to remain faithful in the midst of severe suffering.

There will always be times in our lives when it is difficult to wake-up in the morning. Everything appears to be falling apart and we are tempted to lose our faith in God.

It is during those moments of difficulty where we need to cry out to God in our anguish and ask him for help.

One powerful intercessor in this regard is St. Agatha, a young Roman woman of the 3rd century who refused to have sex with a Roman magistrate. For her obstinance she was imprisoned, beaten and subject to excruciating torture that eventually involved the shearing off of her breasts.

If anyone knows about pain, it is St. Agatha!

Yet, in the midst of it all, St. Agatha remained faithful to God and persevered to the bitter end. She remains an example of faithfulness during trial and can intercede for us, asking God for the grace of perseverance. Here is a prayer for this intention, in hopes that whatever trial we endure, our faith will not be shaken.

Dear St. Agatha, glorious virgin and martyr, you suffered yourself to be reviled and buffeted, to be tortured by rack, fire, and sword in a most painful manner; and by this fortitude and heroism you merited to be consoled and gladdened in the midst of your dreadful torments by the sight of your guardian angel and the prince of the apostles: obtain for me, I pray, by your merits and by your intercession with Jesus Christ, your divine Spouse, that I may surfer joyfully every temporal loss, rather than prove unfaithful to my Lord and my God. Ask for me the grace of perseverance, that I may with thee enjoy the beatific vision and praise God forevermore. Amen.

A Prayer for healing past memories

Sometimes letting go of the past is the hardest action a person can do.

Throughout our lives, we all experience moments that negatively impact us. Perhaps it was a painful memory involving a loved one, a stranger, or simply a bad decision we made. Whatever the source of our suffering, it is important that we bring it before the feet of our Good Shepherd. He is the one who looks kindly upon us and wills our good.

In the book of Jeremiah, God says to the prophet, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). This passage alone can bring us great comfort, but sometimes we need to pour out our hearts to God and ask Him to heal us.

St. Augustine once wrote, “Trust the past to the mercy of God, the present to His love, and the future to His providence.” This is not an easy maxim to live by, but it is the only way we can move on with our lives.

The psalms are a powerful tool for healing, and Psalm 22 is particularly effective for those struggling with painful memories. When we pray this psalm, we unite ourselves with Jesus on the cross, who prayed it himself. We express our pain and hurt, but we also end by praising God for His goodness to us. Take your time as you pray, inviting God into your memories and asking Him to place His healing hand upon your head and heart.

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
Why so far from my call for help,
from my cries of anguish?
My God, I call by day, but you do not answer;
by night, but I have no relief.
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the glory of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted and you rescued them.
To you they cried out and they escaped;
in you they trusted and were not disappointed.
But I am a worm, not a man,
scorned by men, despised by the people.
All who see me mock me;
they curl their lips and jeer;
they shake their heads at me:
“He relied on the Lord—let him deliver him;
if he loves him, let him rescue him.”
For you drew me forth from the womb,
made me safe at my mother’s breasts.
Upon you I was thrust from the womb;
since my mother bore me you are my God.
Do not stay far from me,
for trouble is near,
and there is no one to help.

Many bulls surround me;
fierce bulls of Bashan encircle me.
They open their mouths against me,
lions that rend and roar.
Like water my life drains away;
all my bones are disjointed.
My heart has become like wax,
it melts away within me.
As dry as a potsherd is my throat;
my tongue cleaves to my palate;
you lay me in the dust of death.
Dogs surround me.
a pack of evildoers closes in on me.
They have pierced my hands and my feet
I can count all my bones.
They stare at me and gloat;
they divide my garments among them;
for my clothing they cast lots.
But you, Lord, do not stay far off;
my strength, come quickly to help me.
Deliver my soul from the sword,
my life from the grip of the dog.
Save me from the lion’s mouth,
my poor life from the horns of wild bulls.

Then I will proclaim your name to my brethren;
in the assembly I will praise you:
“You who fear the Lord, give praise!
All descendants of Jacob, give honor;
show reverence, all descendants of Israel!
For he has not spurned or disdained
the misery of this poor wretch,
Did not turn away from me,
but heard me when I cried out.
I will offer praise in the great assembly;
my vows I will fulfill before those who fear him.
The poor will eat their fill;
those who seek the Lord will offer praise.
May your hearts enjoy life forever!”

All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord;
All the families of nations
will bow low before him.
For kingship belongs to the Lord,
the ruler over the nations.
All who sleep in the earth
will bow low before God;
All who have gone down into the dust
will kneel in homage.
And I will live for the Lord;
my descendants will serve you.
The generation to come will be told of the Lord,
that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn
the deliverance you have brought.
