Ask the Holy Spirit to light a fire in your heart before Mass starts

0

Sometimes our cold heart needs the warmth of the Spirit to participate more fully in Mass.

The Second Vatican Council encouraged the laity to embrace a “fully conscious and active participation” in the Mass. This was primarily aimed at a spiritual participation in the Mass, where those in the pews are fully present to what is happening in front of them and offering up their lives to God in union with the priest.

However, it is tempting for many of us to attend Mass and only warm the pew and not our hearts. We simply go through the motions, and are not “consciously” participating in the liturgy.

One way to light a fire in our soul is to ask the Holy Spirit to inflame our heart with a deep love of God and understanding of the Mass. We need the guidance of the Holy Spirit if we are to offer ourselves to God at Mass, preparing our hearts to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist.

Here is a short prayer from an 1876 prayer book that perfectly summarizes this desire and is a great way to get in the right spiritual mood before Mass begins.

Holy Spirit, fill my cold heart with love, that I may hear this Mass with much reverence and devotion.

Mary, my Mother, pray for me. My Guardian-angel, shield me from all vain and wandering thoughts.

Pray this prayer when using holy water to bless yourself

There is an optional prayer for when you dip your fingers into the holy water font.

Most of the time when we dip our fingers into the holy water font, either at church or at home, we simply make the sign of the cross and go about our way.

Making the sign of the cross with holy water is a prayer in itself and asks the Holy Trinity to surround us with protection and grace.

However, there is also an additional prayer that can be said (though certainly not required) that is found in the Golden Manual. It is a short prayer that is taken directly from Psalm 51, and perfectly summarizes the symbolism found in using holy water to bless ourselves.

Water is always seen in Christian theology as a means of purification, and so we ask God to cleanse us every time we use holy water. Below is the optional prayer that can lead to a more fruitful experience of dipping your fingers into the holy water font.

Prayer:

Sprinkle me, O Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be made whiter than the snow. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Be freed from discouragement with this beautiful prayer Pope Francis offered to Mary

In a traditional visit to the monument to the Immaculate Conception, pope praises Virgin because “we are sinners, but we are no longer slaves to sin!”

During his address before leading the midday Sunday Angelus in St Peter’s Square, Pope Francis announced he would be visiting Piazza di Spagna for “the traditional act of homage at the foot of the monument to the Immaculate Conception.”

This statue of Our Lady stands above a 40-foot ancient Roman column. It was placed there on September 8, 1857, the feast of Mary’s birthday, and commemorates Pope Pius IX’s proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

The column and statue were originally erected with the help of 220 firemen, which is why the floral tributes always include a garland of flowers placed in Our Lady’s arms by a member of Rome’s fire department. The tradition of offering flowers to her image here on this feast day was begun by Pope Pius XII.

Pope Francis’ prayer

When he arrived in Piazza di Spagna on Sunday afternoon, Pope Francis addressed his own prayer to Our Lady at the foot of the monument. He entrusted to her all those in Rome and throughout the world, who are burdened “by discouragement because of sin; those who think there is no longer hope for them, that their sins are too many and too great, and that God certainly does not have time to waste with them.”

The pope thanked our Immaculate Mother for reminding us that, because of Jesus’ love “we are no longer slaves to sin, but free, free to love, free to love one another, to help one another as brothers and sisters, despite our differences.”

Below please find the unofficial Vatican News translation of the Holy Father’s prayer:

O Mary Immaculate,
we gather around you once again.
The more we move forward in life
the more our gratitude to God increases
for giving as a Mother to us who are sinners,
you, the Immaculate Conception.
Of all human beings, you are the only one
preserved from sin, as Mother of Jesus,
the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
But this singular privilege of yours
was given to you for the good of us all, your children.
In fact, looking at you, we see the victory of Christ,
the victory of God’s love over evil:
where sin abounded, namely, in the human heart,
grace has overflowed all the more,
through the gentle power of Jesus’ Blood.
You, Mother, remind us that we are sinners,
but we are no longer slaves to sin!
Through His Sacrifice, your Son
has broken the rule of evil, and has overcome the world.
This tells all generations about your heart,
clear as the sky where the wind has dissipated every cloud.

And so you remind us that being sinners and being corrupt
is not the same thing: it’s very different.
It is one thing to fall, but then, repenting,
to get up again with the help of God’s mercy.
Something else is hypocritical conspiracy with evil,
corruption of the heart, that appears faultless on the outside,
but inside, is full of evil intentions and nasty selfishness.
Your crystal-clear purity calls us back to sincerity,
transparency, simplicity.
How much we need to be liberated
from corruption of heart, which is the greatest danger!
This seems impossible to us, we are so accustomed to it,
yet it is within easy reach. It is enough to look up
at your Motherly smile, at your unspoiled beauty,
to feel once more that we are not meant for evil,
but for good, for love, for God!

For this reason, O Virgin Mary,
today I entrust to you all those who, in this city
and throughout the world, are burdened by disillusionment,
by discouragement because of sin;
those who think there is no longer hope for them,
that their sins are too many and too great,
and that God certainly does not have time to waste with them.
I entrust them to you, because not only are you a Mother
and as such, you never stop loving your children,
but you are also Immaculate, full of grace,
and you can reflect into the darkest gloom
a ray of the Risen Christ’s light.
He, and He alone, breaks the chains of evil,
frees from the most acute dependencies,
unties from the most criminal bonds,
softens the hardest of hearts.
And if this happens within people,
how the face of the city changes!
In small gestures and big choices,
vicious circles gradually become virtuous,
the quality of life improves
and the social climate becomes more breathable.

We thank you, Immaculate Mother,
for reminding us that, because of Jesus Christ’s love,
we are no longer slaves to sin,
but free, free to love, to love one another,
to help one another as brothers and sisters, despite our differences —
and thank you for the differences between us.
Thank you, because with your purity, you encourage us
not to be ashamed of good, but of evil;
you help us to keep at a distance the evil one,
who deceives us and draws us to himself, into coils of death;
you grant us the gentle reminder that we are children of God,
Father of immense goodness,
eternal source of life, beauty and love. Amen.

Padre Pio’s “Secret Weapon Prayer” that resulted to multiples of Miracles

When someone asks you to pray for them, why not pray with “Padre Pio Power”? When I heard that the prayer below (written by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque) was the one Padre Pio would use when people asked him to pray for them, I needed no further encouragement for choosing this prayer in the same way. Padre Pio has tens of thousands of miracles associated with him, including the healing of a very good friend of Pope John Paul II.

When you use this prayer, keep a journal to record these special intentions. Keep in mind this type of petition is for specific needs such as gainful employment, healing from an illness, etc. After some time has passed, refer back to this journal to record the amazing way God answers these prayers. Due to our limited view and God’s eternal view, it is important to always trust that He knows far better what is really needed in these situations. Be open to seeing how sometimes He answers our specific prayers in a way that does not always match exactly with what we asked. When looking back on these petitions, see how His way is better.

Padre Pio’s Sacred Heart Novena Prayer

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of (here name your request). Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in Your name, I ask the Father for the grace of (here name your request). Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O my Jesus, You have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but My words will not pass away.” Encouraged by Your infallible words I now ask for the grace of (here name your request). Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory Be … Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of You, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Your tender Mother and ours.

Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: “St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.”

Pope Francis’ prayer for the Immaculate Conception: ‘You never stop loving your children’

For the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Pope Francis on Sunday venerated a statue of the Virgin Mary located in Rome’s Piazza di Spagna, reciting a prayer he wrote for the occasion.

“I entrust to you all those who, in this city and in the whole world, are oppressed by distrust, by discouragement due to sin; those who think that for them there is no more hope, that their faults are too many and too great, and that God has no time to waste with them,” the pope prayed Dec. 8.

“I entrust them to you, because you are not only a mother, and as such you never stop loving your children, but you are also the Immaculate, full of grace, and you can reflect right into the deepest darkness a ray of the light of the Risen Christ.”

“We thank you, Immaculate Mother,” he continued, “for reminding us that, by the love of Jesus Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin, but free, free to love, to love each other, to help each other as brothers, even if different from us.”

On the feast day, Pope Francis also offered a prayer before the Byzantine Marian icon Salus Populi Romani in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

The statue of the Immaculate Conception in Piazza di Spagna sits atop a nearly 40-foot-high column. It was dedicated Dec. 8, 1857, just a few years after the Catholic Church proclaimed the doctrine of Mary’s Immaculate Conception. Since the 1950s, it has been a custom for popes to venerate the statue for the feast day.

The statue is adorned with flower wreaths hung around Mary’s outstretched arms and laid at the base of the statue.

Below is the full text of the original prayer Pope Francis offered for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception Dec. 8.

O Mary Immaculate,
we gather around you once again.
The more we go on in life
the more our gratitude to God increases
for giving to us as a mother, we that are sinners,
You, who are the Immaculate.
Among all human beings, you are the only one
preserved from sin, as the mother of Jesus
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
But this your unique privilege
it was given to you for the sake of us all, your children.
In fact, looking at you, we see the victory of Christ,
the victory of God’s love over evil:
where sin abounded, that is, in the human heart,
grace overflowed,
for the gentle power of the Blood of Jesus.
You, Mother, remind us that, yes, we are sinners,
but we are no longer slaves to sin!
Your Son, with his Sacrifice,
He broke the dominion of evil, He won the world.
Your heart tells this to all generations
as clear as the sky where the wind has dispeled every cloud.

And so you remind us that it’s not the same thing
to be sinners and to be corrupt: it is very different.
It is one thing to fall, but then, repent, confess it
and rise again with the help of God’s mercy.
Another thing is the hypocritical connivance with evil,
the corruption of the heart, which is impeccable outside,
but inside is full of evil intentions and petty selfishness.
Your clear purity recalls us to sincerity,
to transparency, to simplicity.
How much we need to be released
from the corruption of the heart, which is the most serious danger!
This seems impossible to us, we are so inured,
and instead it is at hand. Enough
to raise our eyes to your Mother’s smile, to your pristine beauty,
to feel again that we are not made for evil,
but for good, for love, for God!

For this, O Virgin Mary,
today I entrust to you all those who, in this city
and in the whole world, are oppressed by distrust,
by discouragement due to sin;
those who think that for them there is no more hope,
that their faults are too many and too great,
and that God has no time to waste with them.
I entrust them to you, because you are not only a mother,
and as such you never stop loving your children,
but you are also the Immaculate, full of grace,
and you can reflect right into the deepest darkness
a ray of the light of the Risen Christ.
He, and He alone, breaks the chains of evil,
free from the most relentless addictions,
dissolves from the most criminal ties,
softens the most hardened hearts.
And if this happens inside people,
how the face of the city changes!
In small gestures and in great choices,
vicious circles become virtuous little by little,
the quality of life becomes better
and the most breathable social climate.

We thank you, Immaculate Mother,
for reminding us that, by the love of Jesus Christ,
we are no longer slaves to sin,
but free, free to love, to love each other,
to help each other as brothers, even if different from us.
Thank you for encouraging us with your candor
not to be ashamed of good, but of evil;
help us to keep the evil one away from us,
who with deceit draws us to himself, into the coils of death;
give us the sweet memory that we are children of God,
the Father of immense goodness,
the eternal source of life, beauty and love. Amen.

This Is the Last Prayer the Martyr-Nuns in Yemen Prayed Before Being Killed

As you may have heard, there was a terrible attack on a Missionaries of Charity convent and nursing home for the elderly and disabled persons in Aden, Yemen. It left 16 dead, including 4 of the religious sisters.

“For me there is no doubt that the sisters have been victims of hatred – hatred against our faith,” Bishop Paul Hinder of the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia said. “The Missionaries of Charity died as martyrs: as martyrs of charity, as martyrs because they witnessed Christ and shared the lot of Jesus on the Cross.”

The bishop pointed out that the sisters always prayed a certain prayer just before breakfast, and that, given the timing of the attack, it may have been their last prayer. This is how it goes:

“Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward.”

That pretty much sums up the incredible humility and faith of the Missionaries of Charity, who give up everything to serve the poorest of the world’s poor.

May God grant all of us the grace to have such faith – and to be ready to die for Christ like the sisters did.

The Missionaries of Charity martyrs of Yemen please pray for us!

“Angels caught me and Jesus loves me,” says 5-year-old boy thrown off a 3rd floor balcony

This is a reminder to depend on our guardian angels!

After a 7-month recovery, 5-year-old Landen Hoffman is walking normally and back in Kindergarten with a smile on his face.According to his GoFundMe page, which was set up after Landen was maliciously thrown by a stranger over 40 feet from a balcony in the Mall of America in Minnesota on April 12th, Landen has made a miraculous recovery and is now spreading a message of hope and survival. [Note: The attacker pleaded guilty to the crime and is now spending 19-years in jail].

“Landen loves life and Jesus!” His mother wrote on a November 22nd update. “He tells people all the time when they get hurt, ‘Don’t worry, I fell off a cliff but angels caught me and Jesus loves me, so I’m okay and you will be too!’”

The news comes from Landen’s GoFundMe page, which has exceeded its goal of 1 million dollars to pay for Landen’s medical expenses incurred from extensive injuries including skull fractures and several broken limbs.

And while Landen’s story is ultimately one of good triumphing over evil, it is also a sober reminder of the darkness that surrounds us.  Landen’s attacker claimed he went to the mall “looking for someone to kill.”  All the more reason to follow Landen’s family’s example of relying on God in prayer.

Prayer to Your Guardian Angel:

Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God’s love commits me here, Ever this day, be at my side, To light and guard, Rule and guide. Amen.

“From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their (the angels) watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united to God.”  – from the Catechism of the Catholic Church; 336.

Powerful prayer to your Guardian Angel for protection from all evil

1

Many are familiar with the “Angel of God” prayer to one’s guardian angel. It is a simple prayer, taught to children and retained in adulthood. However, it is not the only prayer in the Church’s rich treasury of prayers.

Among the many different prayers one could say to their guardian angel, below is another alternative. It is an all encompassing prayer that highlights the different activities of our guardian angels. The prayer reminds us that our guardian angels are powerful intercessors who constantly protect us from evil and try to draw us away from sin. They hold us up each day and provide invisible assistance that we usually never notice.

Our guardian angels are our true “companions” in life, daily with us in our journey of holiness. If you are looking for a prayer that helps remind you of this beautiful reality, here is a prayer that can be prayed on a daily basis and help you solidify a deeper relationship with them.

Powerful Prayer to your guardian Angel

Most faithful companion, appointed by God to be my guardian, my protector, and defender, and who never leavest my side, how shall I thank thee for thy faithfulness and love, and for all the benefits which thou hast conferred upon me?

Thou watch over me while I sleep; [T]hou comfort me when I am sad; thou lift me up when I am down; [T]hou avert the dangers that threaten me; thou warn me of those that are to come; [T]hou withdraw me from sin, and excite me to good; thou exhort me to penance when I fall, and reconcile me to God.

Long ago should I have been thrust down into hell, unless by thy prayers thou hadst turned away from me the anger of God. Leave me not, nor forsake me ever, I beseech thee, but still comfort me in adversity, restrain me in prosperity, defend me in danger, assist me in temptations, lest at any time I fall beneath them. Offer up in the sight of the Divine Majesty my prayers and groanings, and all my works of piety, and make me to persevere in grace until I come to everlasting life.

Amen.

This Powerful Prayer by St. Faustina is Perfect for the Church in Crisis

0

The Church is in crisis, and she needs our prayers.

Because of the sex abuse by clergy in the Church, we need to pray for our priests now more than ever.

Remember, without our priests, we do not have anyone to administer the sacraments. Without the sacraments, we do not have the grace that Jesus offers us through the Church.

St. John Vianney said, “When people want to destroy religion, they begin by attacking the priest; for when there is no priest, there is no sacrifice, and when there is no sacrifice, there is no religion.”

This is why prayer for our priests is so important. The devil wants to attack the priesthood, because the sacraments are our gateway to heaven. He doesn’t want us in heaven!

Below is a prayer written by St. Faustina, taken directly from her diary.

St. Faustina’s Prayer for Priests

“O my Jesus, I beg Thee on behalf of the whole Church:
Grant it love and the light of Your Spirit,
and give power to the words of priests
so that hardened hearts might be brought to repentance
and return to You, O Lord.

Lord, give us holy priests;
You yourself maintain them in holiness.
O Divine and Great High Priest,
may the power of Your mercy accompany them everywhere
and protect them from the devil’s traps and snares
which are continually being set for the souls of priests.

May the power of Your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught
all that might tarnish the sanctity of priests,
for You can do all things.”
