Saint of the Day: St. Thomas Aquinas (THURSDAY, JANUARY 28)

Patron Saint of Catholic Schools, Theologians, and Philosophers. Dominican Friar and Doctor of the Church (1225-1274)

His life

+ Thomas was in the Aquino region of Italy. Educated by the Benedictine monks at the great abbey of Monte Cassino, he also studied at the University of Naples.

+ Despite severe opposition from his family, he entered the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) in 1244. He was sent to study in Cologne, Germany, where he was a student of Saint Albert the Great. Ordained a priest in 1250, he was sent to teach at the University of Paris.

+ Thomas Aquinas is especially remembered for his commentaries on the writings of Aristotle and the Sentences of Peter Lombard, giving rise to the Scholastic movement of theology.

+ His greatest work—and one which continues to define much of Roman Catholic theology—is the Summa Theologica. This systematic exploration of theology combined Greek wisdom with the tenets of Sacred Scripture and the writings of the Fathers of the Church, as well as the movements of medieval theology.

+ Saint Thomas Aquinas died on March 7, 1274, as he traveled to the Second Council of Lyons. He was canonized in 1323 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1567. He is honored as the patron of Catholic schools, theologians, and philosophers.

For prayer and reflection

“The things that we love tell us what we are.”—Saint Thomas Aquinas

Spiritual bonus

On January 28 we also remember Saint Lawrence Wang, a lay catechist who was martyred in Maokou, China, in 1858. He was canonized with other Chinese martyrs in 2000.

Prayer

O God, who made Saint Thomas Aquinas

outstanding in his zeal for holiness

and his study of sacred doctrine,

grant us, we pray,

that we may understand what he taught

and imitate what he accomplished.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, JANUARY 28)

Saint Thomas Aquinas

Prayer for the Morning

God’s works are justice and truth:

let us sing his praises!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

Let all the faithful multitude

With joy of soul exult in praise:

The clouds of error melt, subdued

By this new sun’s compelling rays.

As this world’s evening time drew nigh,

From Thomas floods of graces came;

For he abounded from on high

With wisdom and with virtue’s fame.

All brilliant from his teaching’s light,

For chastity of life renowned,

With miracles resplendent, bright;

From him the whole world joy has found.

The depths of Wisdom’s sea profound

He searched, and treasures rich revealed:

While rapt above all human bound,

Made known and clear things long concealed.

Psalm 111

With him are wisdom and might;/ his are counsel and understanding. (Jb 12:13)

Wisdom is more than knowledge. Saint Thomas knew and understood a great deal; he had the gift of wisdom, born of loving prayer, to use what he knew for the service of his God and neighbor, feeding the hungry of spirit with the bread of truth.

I will thank the Lord with all my heart

in the meeting of the just and their assembly.

Great are the works of the Lord;

to be pondered by all who love them.

Majestic and glorious his work,

his justice stands firm for ever.

He makes us remember his wonders.

The Lord is compassion and love.

He gives food to those who fear him;

keeps his covenant ever in mind.

He has shown his might to his people

by giving them the lands of the nations.

His works are justice and truth:

his precepts are all of them sure,

standing firm for ever and ever:

they are made in uprightness and truth.

He has sent deliverance to his people

and established his covenant for ever.

Holy his name, to be feared.

To fear the Lord is the first stage of wisdom;

all who do so prove themselves wise.

His praise shall last for ever!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Proverbs 2:6-11)

The Lord gives wisdom,/ from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;/ He has counsel in store for the upright,/ he is the shield of those who walk honestly,/ Guarding the paths of justice,/ protecting the way of his pious ones.

Then you will understand rectitude and justice,/ honesty, every good path;/ For wisdom will enter your heart,/ knowledge will please your soul,/ Discretion will watch over you,/ understanding will guard you.

The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom;/

at the cost of all you have, get understanding.

(Prv 4:7)

Canticle of Zechariah

Say to Wisdom, “You are my sister!”/ call Understanding, “Friend!” (Prv 7:4)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Through the intercession of Saint Thomas Aquinas, let us pray for the gifts of wisdom and understanding given through the Spirit of God:

R/Pour forth your light upon us, O God!

For the Church,

– that we may be the servants of wisdom and truth: R/

For all who seek understanding,

– that they may find Christ, who is the Truth: R/

For those who study and teach theology,

– that they may be guided by the Spirit of truth: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of light and truth, you sent Saint Thomas Aquinas to learn wisdom through prayer and study. Through his intercession and example, illumine all your Church with the knowledge of you that comes through love made humble in the presence of your mystery. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27)

Prayer for the Evening

In peace and in patience, let us pray to the Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Be still, the Lord is God alone,

Let all the world adore him,

And bending low before his throne,

For pitying grace implore him.

His kingdom is within,

O’er hearts made pure from sin,

Where love that casts out fear

Exults to feel him near,

The Lord of hosts, our refuge.

PSALM 37:5-11

By waiting and by calm you shall be saved,/ in quiet and in trust your strength lies. (Is 30:15)

Peace lies in surrendering to the Lord in trust and living by his love, not in fretting over the wrongs done by others. Undue concern over evils we cannot mend prevents us from taking true delight in him.

Commit your life to the Lord,

trust in him and he will act,

so that your justice breaks forth like the light,

your cause like the noon-day sun.

Be still before the Lord and wait in patience;

do not fret at the man who prospers;

a man who makes evil plots

to bring down the needy and the poor.

Calm your anger and forget your rage;

do not fret, it only leads to evil.

For those who do evil shall perish;

the patient shall inherit the land.

A little longer—and the wicked shall have gone.

Look at his place, he is not there.

But the humble shall own the land

and enjoy the fullness of peace.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32)

Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not leave room for the devil. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. [And] be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.

Love is patient. (1 Cor 13:4)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Blessed are the meek,/ for they will inherit the land. (Mt 5:5)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Our Father….

May the Lord deliver us from all evil and bring us to life everlasting! Amen.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, January 1

The root of Jesse has budded,

a star has arisen from Jacob;

a Virgin has brought forth the Savior;

we praise you, our God.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27)

Saint Angela Merici

Prayer for the Morning

Let us praise the God of mystery and love!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Father, Source of life adored,

Creation’s Author and its Lord!

The universe doth well proclaim

Thine everlasting praise and Name.

Thy word was spoken and ’twas done:

The planets, stars and mighty suns

Fell from thy fingers into space,

Each taking its appointed place.

If we could see with single eye

The wondrous pattern and design

Of this bright ornament of space,

Perhaps it would reveal thy face.

And while with breathless awe we see

This vast creation’s praise of thee,

We join our voices to adore

Thine endless wisdom evermore.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 40:10-14

Who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him? (1 Cor 2:16)

God is mystery. The maker of the universe dwells in light inaccessible, so bright that it blinds the probing eye, the questioning mind. Yet this awesome God has taken on a human face and a human name in Jesus, his Son and Word, the Good Shepherd who carries his stumbling sheep to safe pasture.

Here comes with power

the Lord God,

who rules by his strong arm;

here is his reward with him,

his recompense before him.

Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;

in his arms he gathers the lambs,

carrying them in his bosom,

and leading the ewes with care.

Who has cupped in his hand the waters of the sea,

and marked off the heavens with a span?

Who has held in a measure the dust of the earth,

weighed the mountains in scales

and the hills in a balance?

Who has directed the spirit of the Lord,

or has instructed him as his counselor?

Whom did he consult to gain knowledge?

Who taught him the path of judgment,

or showed him the way of understanding?

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Proverbs 30:4-5)

“Who has gone up to heaven and come down again—/ who has cupped the wind in his hands?/ Who has bound up the waters in a cloak—/ who has marked out all the ends of the earth?/ What is his name, what is his son’s name,/ if you know it?”/ Every word of God is tested;/ he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Truly with you God is hidden,/ the God of Israel,

the savior! (Is 45:15)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

When all the nations of the earth see you bearing the name of the Lord, they will stand in awe of you. (Dt 28:10)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

INTERCESSIONS

With reverence and love, let us lay before our God the needs of the world.

R/Hear us, O God our Savior!

For those who do not hold you in awe:

– grant that they might come to put their trust in your power and might. R/

For those who fear to approach you in prayer:

– grant that they might come to know you as Father and Shepherd. R/

For those who sense your mystery within the mysteries discovered by scientific study:

– grant that they might come to believe in you as Creator of the universe. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, hidden in light inaccessible, you have revealed the face of your love in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Grant us the grace to worship you with reverence and to entrust ourselves to you in love, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, JANUARY 26)

Saints Timothy and Titus

Prayer for the Morning

Jesus Christ is God’s light and our truth:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Those called by Christ and by him sent

To preach and to proclaim

Made known to all the Kingdom come,

And now with Christ they reign.

Come, Christians, follow Christ this day

Take up your Cross and run,

And you shall win a shining crown

That shall outshine the sun.

PSALM 43:3-5

Do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. (2 Tm 1:8)

Evangelization is not an easy task. With their mentor Saint Paul, Saints Timothy and Titus experienced rejection and discouragement but also joy in proclaiming the triumph of Christ dead and risen, and in building up the Church in his name.

O send forth your light and your truth;

let these be my guide.

Let them bring me to your holy mountain

to the place where you dwell.

And I will come to the altar of God,

the God of my joy.

My redeemer, I will thank you on the harp,

O God, my God.

Why are you cast down, my soul,

why groan within me?

Hope in God; I will praise him still,

my savior and my God.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (2 Timothy 1:9-13)

[God] saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began, but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher. On this account I am suffering these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day. Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than
his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. (Jn 13:16)

Canticle of Zechariah

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am,” I said; “send me!” (Is 6:8)

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Intercessions

Let us pray through the intercession of Saints Timothy and Titus:

R/Send forth your light and your truth!

You have called many to live and to preach the Good News of salvation:

– keep all your followers faithful to the message they have received from you. R/

You have called men and women from every walk of life to bear witness to you:

– sustain them in the midst of opposition and fill them with your joy. R/

You have chosen from among your followers bishops, priests, and deacons:

– fill them with zeal and eloquence in proclaiming your Word. R/

Our Father….

O God, you will the salvation of all peoples. Send dedicated disciples, zealous preachers, and selfless servants of charity into the world for our redemption, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A powerful prayer to St. Joseph for the conversion of a family member

When someone we love has lost their way and needs a little spiritual help.

As hard as we try to have a positive influence on our family members, there will be occasions when a loved one drifts away from God and pursues a life contrary to the Gospel. It can be difficult to watch and often we will feel helpless, not knowing what to do.

Besides being a faithful witness of love and charity, we can also extend to them our spiritual help, praying that they turn back and embrace the loving arms of God.

That’s exactly what St. Monica did with her rebellious son, St. Augustine, and he became one of the greatest saints of all time.

Below is a prayer to St. Joseph for the intention of someone’s conversion. It is a powerful prayer, as St. Joseph is known as a great intercessor in times of need.

Oh glorious patriarch St. Joseph, who merited to be called “just” by the Holy Spirit, I urgently recommend to the soul of [Name], which Jesus redeemed at the price of his precious blood.Thou knowest how deplorable is the state and how unhappy the life of those who have banished this loving savior from their hearts, and how greatly they are exposed to the danger of losing him eternally. Permit not, I beseech thee, that a soul so dear to me should continue any longer in its evil ways; preserve it from the danger that threatens it; touch the heart of the prodigal child and conduct him back to the bosom of the fondest of fathers. Abandon him not, I implore thee, till thou hast opened to him the gates of the heavenly city, where he will praise and bless thee throughout eternity for the happiness which he will owe to thy powerful intercession.Amen.

Prayer to convert a wandering soul

0

Do you know someone who has lost their way? Say this prayer.

Basically, there is a probability, a loved one might lose their way. Many of us have experienced this at one point our lives. It happens that most times they lose motivation to seek God or totally have lost their faith in God. As a Catholic, Sometimes all we can do for that soul is pray for them, asking God to illuminate their minds and lead their hearts back to him. This is where this Prayer to convert a wandering soul comes in handy.

Remember! Judging them will most likely not bring them to the right Part, and most of all, it’s a sin. Here is an excerpt of a prayer from the 19th-century prayer book, Catholic Hours.

Prayer to convert a wandering soul

Incarnate God, my divine my adorable Redeemer who are the way the truth and the life, bring him or her to the knowledge of your truth. O you who are the Light of the blind, the Refuge of sinners, our Savior and our Sacrifice, O you who gave yourself to be our daily bread, have mercy upon him. You O Lord know what is in man and you know what trammels surround him. You know all his darkness, all his weakness, all his doubts. Have pity therefore upon him, O my Savior, and let the bright beams of your eternal truth shine in upon his mind, clear away the clouds of error and of prejudice from before his eyes and mercifully teach him your truth and to make him your own. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, JANUARY 25)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Great convert Teacher of the Faith

Who never ceased from preaching Christ,

Saint Paul, impart to us your zeal,

That we may reach the joys unseen.

All glory to the Trinity,

For ever honor, sov’reignty;

To God Almighty be all praise,

Beginning and the End of all.

PSALM 19:8-15

The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. (Rom 8:2)

On the road to Damascus, Saint Paul was freed from the law of sin and death to become a willing slave to the law of life and love given in Jesus Christ.

The law of the Lord is perfect,

it revives the soul.

The rule of the Lord is to be trusted,

it gives wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right,

they gladden the heart.

The command of the Lord is clear,

it gives light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is holy,

abiding for ever.

The decrees of the Lord are truth

and all of them just.

They are more to be desired than gold,

than the purest of gold,

and sweeter are they than honey,

than honey from the comb.

So in them your servant finds instruction;

great reward is in their keeping.

But who can detect all his errors?

From hidden faults acquit me.

From presumption restrain your servant

and let it not rule me.

Then shall I be blameless,

clean from grave sin.

May the spoken words of my mouth,

the thoughts of my heart,

win favor in your sight, O Lord,

my rescuer, my rock!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Corinthians 15:8-10)

Last of all, as to one born abnormally, [Christ] appeared to me. For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Indeed, I have toiled harder than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God [that is] with me.

I am Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be

an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.

(cf. Rom 1:1)

CANTICLE OF MARY

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain. (Jn 15:16)

Your law revives the soul:

– refresh all those who have become lost in the desert of lawlessness. R/

Your law gives wisdom to the simple:

– grant the wisdom of the cross to all those who wish to serve you. R/

Your decrees are truth:

– turn all peoples away from appealing deceptions and toward the truth of the Gospel. R/

Your word gives light to the eye:

– bring into the fullness of your light all our beloved dead. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May grace and peace in Jesus Christ be with all those beloved of God! Amen. (cf. Rom 1:7)

we praise you, our God.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

The Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul

“I am Jesus the Nazarene whom you are persecuting.”

The story

+ Saul was a faithful Pharisee who was born in Tarsus. Entrusted with a formal mission by the high priest, Saul departed for Damascus, intending to arrest Christians in that city and bring them to Jerusalem for trial.

+ As Saul was nearing the city, a light from heaven suddenly blazed around him and an immediate transformation took place in the soul of Saul, who would become known as “Paul.”

+ In his many letters, Saint Paul never recalled the moment of his conversion with deep gratitude for the mercy and love shown by the Divine Master.

+ The Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul was first celebrated in France in the sixth century and was introduced in Rome in the eleventh century.

For prayer and reflection

“[Paul] was consistent, because he was a man open to God. If he persecuted Christians, it was because he was convinced that God desired it. But how can that be? Never mind how: he was convinced of it. This is the zeal he carried for the purity of the house of God, for the glory of God. A heart open to the voice of the Lord. And he risked all, and charged ahead. Another characteristic of his actions is that he was a docile man – full of docility – and was not hard-headed.”—Pope Francis

Prayer

O God, who taught the whole world

through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Paul,

draw us, we pray, nearer to you

through the example of him whose conversion we celebrate today,

and so make us witnesses to your truth in the world.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
