PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8)

Saint Jerome Emiliani; Saint Josephine Bakhita

Prayer for the Morning

Be still and know the Lord: in peace, let us pray!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Let every creature rise and bring

Peculiar honors to our King;

Angels descend with songs again,

And earth repeat the loud amen!

With power he vindicates the just,

And treads th’oppressor in the dust:

His worship and his fear shall last

Till hours, and years, and time be past.

As rain on meadows newly mown,

So shall he send his influence down:

His grace on fainting souls distills,

Like heav’nly dew on thirsty hills.

The saints shall flourish in his days,

Dressed in the robes of joy and praise;

Peace, like a river, from his throne

Shall flow to nations yet unknown.

Psalm 46

By waiting and by calm you shall be saved,/ in quiet and in trust your strength lies. (Is 30:15b)

God in his power is refuge and strength; God in his mercy is the river that refreshes the soul; God in his beauty stills all our useless struggles and gathers us into his peace.

God is for us a refuge and strength,

a helper close at hand, in time of distress:

so we shall not fear though the earth should rock,

though the mountains fall into the depths of the sea,

even though its waters rage and foam,

even though the mountains be shaken by its waves.

R/The Lord of hosts is with us:

the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

The waters of a river give joy to God’s city,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within, it cannot be shaken;

God will help it at the dawning of the day.

Nations are in tumult, kingdoms are shaken:

he lifts his voice, the earth shrinks away. R/

Come, consider the works of the Lord,

the redoubtable deeds he has done on the earth.

He puts an end to wars over all the earth;

the bow he breaks, the spear he snaps.

He burns the shields with fire.

“Be still and know that I am God,

supreme among the nations, supreme on the earth!” R/

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 49:5)

The Lord has spoken/ who formed me as his servant from the womb,/ That Jacob may be brought back to him/ and Israel gathered to him;/ And I am made glorious in the sight of the Lord,/ and my God is now my strength!

The kingdom of God is among you! (cf. Lk 17:21)

Canticle of Zechariah

The Lord himself will fight for you; you have only to keep still. (Ex 14:14)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Let us lay all our needs in the merciful hands of God:

R/Grant peace, O Lord.

You are a helper close at hand in time of distress:

– grant peace of heart to all who are troubled and

afraid. R/

You are in our midst when life’s ills assail us:

– keep our hearts fixed on you amid all disturbances. R/

Your Word is the river of life which gives joy to your people:

– refresh in prayer all who are burdened. R/

You put an end to war and to the weapons of war:

– teach us to lay aside all quarrels and attacks on our neighbors. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

Almighty and ever-living God, your Word is the rock in which we take refuge against all outward disturbance and inner turmoil. Pour forth upon your people the refreshing stream of living water which wells up from the heart of your Son, that we may dwell together in inward and outward peace, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7)

Prayer for the Evening

Christ is God’s love for us made flesh:

come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Christ, the Healer, we have come

To pray for health, to plead for friends.

How can we fail to be restored,

When reached by love that never ends.

From every ailment flesh endures

Our bodies clamor to be freed;

Yet in our hearts we would confess

That wholeness is our deepest need.

Grant that we all, made one in faith,

In your community may find

The wholeness that, enriching us,

Shall reach the whole of humankind.

PSALM 30:3-4, 9-13

Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. (Mt 10:8)

Like Simon’s mother-in-law, who opened her house so that others might receive the healing that she had been given, Saint Paul felt the burden and the privilege of handing on to others the Gospel of salvation which he had received. As we have received, so let us give!

O Lord, I cried to you for help

and you, my God, have healed me.

O Lord, you have raised my soul from the dead,

restored me to life from those who sink into the grave.

To you, Lord, I cried,

to my God I made appeal:

“What profit would my death be, my going to the grave?

Can dust give you praise or proclaim your truth?”

The Lord listened and had pity.

The Lord came to my help.

For me you have changed my mourning into dancing,

you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.

So my soul sings psalms to you unceasingly.

O Lord my God, I will thank you for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 49:3-4)

You are my servant, he said to me,/ Israel, through whom I show my glory.

Though I thought I had toiled in vain,/ and for nothing, uselessly, spent my strength,/ Yet my reward is with the Lord,/ my recompense is with my God.

The just live forever,/ and in the Lord is their

recompense,/ and the thought of them is

with the Most High. (Wis 5:15)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Tell them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, ready to share. (1 Tm 6:18)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray with grateful hearts:

R/As you have done for us, may we also do.

You have loved us without limit: R/

You have heard us in our every need: R/

You have borne our burdens even unto death: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May mercy, peace, and love be ours in abundance. Amen. (cf. Jude 2)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, February 2

Today the Blessed Virgin Mary

presented the Child Jesus in the Temple;

and Simeon, filled with the Holy Spirit,

took him into his arms,

and blessed God forever.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Ave, Regina caelorum,

Ave, Domina angelorum,

Salve, radix, salve, porta,

Ex qua mundo lux est orta.

Gaude, Virgo gloriosa,

Super omnes speciosa;

Vale, O valde decora,

Et pro nobis Christum exora.

Hail, O Queen of heaven enthroned.

Hail, by angels mistress owned.

Root of Jesse, Gate of morn

Whence the world’s true light was born:

Glorious Virgin, joy to thee,

Loveliest whom in heaven they see;

Fairest thou, where all are fair,

Plead with Christ our souls to spare.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us take up the cup of salvation

and call on the name of the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Bleeding and bound in the prison, behold!

Peter restored the sweet lamb to his fold;

Gladly she faces the torture again,

Rising in triumph o’er evil and pain.

Even the strangers, who knew not the Lord,

Flying destruction, were saved by her word;

Surely to those who are marked with his seal,

She will bring graces to help and to heal.

Glorious Agatha, now as a bride,

Raised by your Savior, you stand at his side;

Hear us and plead for us, keeping your day,

Lift us and lead us to Jesus, we pray.

PSALM 116:10-19

Jesus said, “The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.” (cf. Mk 10:39)

The Lord strengthened Saint Agatha to take up with courage the cup of salvation, the cup of his blood, the blood of the new covenant, poured out for our redemption. Let us pray that he will grant us a share in her courage and her fidelity.

I trusted, even when I said:

“I am sorely afflicted,”

and when I said in my alarm:

“No man can be trusted.”

How can I repay the Lord

for his goodness to me?

The cup of salvation I will raise;

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord

is the death of his faithful.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;

you have loosened my bonds.

A thanksgiving sacrifice I make:

I will call on the Lord’s name.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill

before all his people,

in the courts of the house of the Lord,

in your midst, O Jerusalem.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (2 Corinthians 4:17–5:2)

This momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.

For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven. For in this tent we groan, longing to be further clothed with our heavenly habitation.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. (Ps 25:1)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I am already being poured out like a libation. (2 Tm 4:6)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS (cf. Litany of the Precious Blood)

Redeemed by the blood of Christ, we pray:

R/Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world:

have mercy on us!

Blood of Christ, Only Begotten Son of the eternal Father, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, Incarnate Word of God, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, of the new and eternal covenant,

save us. R/

Blood of Christ, poured out on the cross, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, price of our salvation, save us. R/

Blood of Christ, shed anew in the martyrs, save us. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the all-powerful God protect us from all evil and bring us to life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5)

Saint Agatha; First Friday of the Month

Prayer for the Morning

Come, let us adore the Lamb of God

whom the virgins follow!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Bright shall the day of Saint Agatha rise,

Virgin and martyr, for lo! from the skies,

Christ, as a lover, stooped tenderly down,

Crowning her brow with his duplicate crown.

Born unto affluence, gentle in blood,

Wealth and temptation she bravely withstood;

Earth with its vanities casting aside,

Binding her soul to her God as a bride.

Stronger of heart than the tyrant, her foe,

Patient she bowed ’neath the lash and the blow;

And by her bosom, all rent by the sword,

Proved her invincible love for the Lord.

Canticle (Zephaniah 3:14-18a)

I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. (Lk 12:4)

In crying out to God, Saint Agatha found courage to face bodily torture and death. She went to her death as to her wedding banquet, trusting that Christ, the bridegroom with whom she kept faith in this life, would keep faith with her in the life to come.

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion!

sing joyfully, O Israel!

Be glad and exult with all your heart,

O daughter Jerusalem!

The Lord has removed the judgment against you,

he has turned away your enemies;

The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst,

you have no further misfortune to fear.

On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem:

Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged!

The Lord, your God, is in your midst,

a mighty savior;

He will rejoice over you with gladness,

and renew you in his love,

He will sing joyfully because of you,

as one sings at festivals.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Philippians 3:8-9a, 10)

I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, to know him and the power of his resurrection and [the] sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death.

Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

(Lk 23:46)

Canticle of Zechariah

If we are afflicted, it is for your encouragement and salvation. (2 Cor 1:6)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Through the intercession of Saint Agatha, we pray:

R/Lord, have mercy.

For the poor and the powerless,

– that you, O Christ, may be their defense. R/

For the threatened and frightened,

– that you, O Christ, may be their protection. R/

For the convinced and the courageous,

– that you, O Christ, may be their guardian. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God, the Father of mercies, you strengthened Saint Agatha to bear torture and death rather than to forsake your Son, to whom her life was pledged. May she plead our cause before you, for she knew how to please you both in her consecration to virginity and in her courage in the face of martyrdom, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2)

Prayer for the Evening

In prayer and in praise, let us seek the Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

When Mary brought her Treasure

Unto the Holy Place,

No eye of man could measure

The joy upon her face.

He was but six weeks old,

Her plaything and her pleasure,

Her silver and her gold.

Then Simeon on him gazing

With wonder and with love,

His aged voice up-raising,

Gave thanks to God above:

Now welcome, sweet release!

For I, my Savior praising,

May die at last in peace.

And she, all sorrow scorning,

Rejoiced in Jesus’ fame;

The Child her arms adorning

Shone softly like a flame

That burns the whole night through,

And keeps from dusk till morning

Its vigil clear and true.

As by the sun in splendor

The flags of night are furled,

So darkness shall surrender

To Christ who lights the world:

To Christ the star of day,

Who once was small and tender,

A candle’s gentle ray.

PSALM 27:1, 4, 6b-8, 13-14

My soul is longing for the Lord/ more than watchman for daybreak. (Ps 130:6)

Simeon and Anna waited in patient faith for the dawning of the Sun of Justice. Let us seek the Lord with all our hearts as they did, so that we too may recognize him when he comes into our lives.

The Lord is my light and my help;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

before whom shall I shrink?

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,

for this I long,

to live in the house of the Lord,

all the days of my life,

to savor the sweetness of the Lord,

to behold his temple.

I shall offer within his tent

a sacrifice of joy.

I will sing and make music for the Lord.

O Lord, hear my voice when I call;

have mercy and answer.

Of you my heart has spoken:

“Seek his face.”

It is your face, O Lord, that I seek.

I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness

in the land of the living.

Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.

Hope in the Lord!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Romans 8:24-25)

In hope we were saved. Now hope that sees for itself is not hope. For who hopes for what one sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait with endurance.

In you we hope; for you we wait.

CANTICLE OF MARY

Coming forward at that very time, Anna gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem. (cf. Lk 2:38)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

in every generation.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

The world awaits the full revelation of God’s mercy in Jesus Christ, as Simeon and Anna waited.

R/It is your face, O Lord, that we seek.

You came to the people that had long awaited you:

– come to those who serve you in patient hope. R/

You were brought to the Temple as an offering from and for the poor:

– come to those who have pledged to you their poverty. R/

You were offered in the Temple as you would offer yourself on the cross:

– come to those who have offered themselves to you through religious vows. R/

You joined your Mother’s offering to your own:

– remember those who take part in your Passion. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

The Lord bless us and keep us!/ The Lord let his face shine upon us, and be gracious to us!/ The Lord look upon us kindly and give us peace! Amen. (cf. Nm 6:24-26)

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2)

“A Light of Revelation to the Nations”

The story behind this celebration

+ On this day, the Church celebrates the feast of light, recalling that forty days after the birth of the Lord, Mary and Joseph took the Child to the temple in Jerusalem.

+ At this time of presentation and purification, the holy man Simeon recognized the infant Messiah and, taking the Child in his arms, proclaimed him to be the “light of revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel.”

+ The candles blessed on this day serve to remind us of Christ, the True Light, and the faith, hope, and love that illumine the Christian heart.

+ The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord was first celebrated in Jerusalem sometime before the year 400 and was first known as the “Feast of the Meeting.”

+ In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II declared that the Feast of the Presentation would be celebrated as World Day of Consecrated Life, on which the Church prays for vocations to the religious life—including religious priests, brothers, and sisters—and celebrates the contributions of women and men religious in the life of the Church. To learn more, visit: http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/vocations/consecrated-life/world-day-for-consecrated-life.cfm

For prayer and reflection

“How good it is for us to hold the Lord “in our arms” (Lk 2:28), like Simeon. Not only in our heads and in our hearts but also “in our hands”, in all that we do: in prayer, at work, at the table, on the telephone, at school, with the poor, everywhere.”—Pope Francis

Spiritual bonus

On this day, we also remember Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac. Following the death of her husband, she entered the Cistercian Order, but we later inspired by a vision of Our Lady which inspired Jeanne to dedicate her life to helping children. In time, she founded a new religious community— the Company of Mary—which had a special mission to support girls and women. Saint Jeanne died in 1640 and was canonized in 1949.

Prayer

Almighty ever-living God,

we humbly implore your majesty

that, just as your Only Begotten Son

was presented on this day in the Temple

in the substance of our flesh,

so, by your grace,

we may be presented to you with minds made pure.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The righteousness of law he chose

Though to the law he nothing owes.

So, Mary, bring this little one,

Yours and the Father’s only Son

Through whom our offering is made,

By whom our ransom price is paid.

And forward, royal Virgin, go

And let rejoicing overflow.

With gifts bring forth your newborn Son

Who comes to rescue everyone.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Glory bright

Who guides the nations into light,

Be praised, and for eternity

Be glorified, O Trinity.

PSALM 24

The glory of the Lord entered the temple by the eastward gate, and the house of God was filled with his splendor. (cf. Ez 43:4-5)

The glory of the living God is made manifest to the eyes of faith and hope in the frail flesh of a child. In baptism we have been made the temple of the living God. Let us welcome the Lord of glory in whatever guise he comes to us, receiving him in joyful prayer, in purity of heart, and in charity toward all.

The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness,

the world and all its peoples.

It is he who set it on the seas;

on the waters he made it firm.

Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord?

Who shall stand in his holy place?

The man with clean hands and pure heart,

who desires not worthless things,

who has not sworn so as to deceive his neighbor.

He shall receive blessings from the Lord

and reward from the God who saves him.

Such are the men who seek him,

seek the face of the God of Jacob.

O gates, lift high your heads;

grow higher, ancient doors.

Let him enter, the king of glory!

Who is the king of glory?

The Lord, the mighty, the valiant,

the Lord, the valiant in war.

O gates, lift high your heads;

grow higher, ancient doors.

Let him enter, the king of glory!

Who is he, the king of glory?

He, the Lord of armies,

he is the king of glory.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 60:2-3, 19c)

See, darkness covers the earth,/ and thick clouds cover the peoples;/ But upon you the Lord shines,/ and over you appears his glory./ Nations shall walk by your light,/ and kings by your shining radiance.

The Lord shall be your light for ever,/ your God shall be your glory.

Jesus Christ is the light no darkness can extinguish!

Canticle of Zechariah

Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord. (Zec 2:14)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

come, let us worship!

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Christ be beside me,

Christ be before me,

Christ be behind me,

King of my heart.

Christ be within me,

Christ be below me,

Christ be above me,

Never to part.

Christ on my right hand,

Christ on my left hand,

Christ all around me,

Shield in the strife.

Christ in my sleeping,

Christ in my sitting,

Christ in my rising,

Light of my life.

PSALM 57:2-6

The serpent asked the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?” (Gn 3:1)

The Psalmist knows that only in God can we find true protection and secure rest.

Have mercy on me, God, have mercy

for in you my soul has taken refuge.

In the shadow of your wings I take refuge

till the storms of destruction pass by.

I call to God the Most High,

to God who has always been my help.

May he send from heaven and save me

and shame those who assail me.

May God send his truth and his love.

My soul lies down among lions,

who would devour the sons of men.

Their teeth are spears and arrows,

their tongue a sharpened sword.

O God, arise above the heavens;

may your glory shine on earth!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 12:43-45)

When an unclean spirit goes out of a person it roams through arid regions searching for rest but finds none. Then it says, “I will return to my home from which I came.” But upon returning, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order. Then it goes and brings back with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they move in and dwell there; and the last condition of that person is worse than the first.

You are our protection, Lord!

(cf. Ps 71:1)

Prayer to the Child Jesus in the arms of St. Anthony

This prayer is to be prayed while meditating on an image of St. Anthony holding the Divine Child Jesus.

In the Life of St. Anthony, there is a story about the saint in which a benefactor witnessed him holding the Child Jesus in his arms.

He saw Anthony kneeling, as if in ecstasy, and, full of wonder, admiring and caressing a loving child of rare beauty, who was tenderly embracing the saint.

This story was spread widely after his death, and numerous statues and paintings depicted St. Anthony in this way.

Why is St. Anthony of Padua depicted holding the Child Jesus?

St. Anthony is also known as a “wonder-worker” and is constantly called-upon for various needs.

With both of these things in mind, here is a “Prayer to the Infant Jesus before an Image of St. Anthony of Padua” printed in a prayer book from the 19th century.

O Jesus my Savior, who appeared to St. Anthony in the form of an infant. I implore you through the love you bore to this saint when he dwelt on earth and which you now bear to him in heaven, graciously hear my prayer and assist me in my necessities. Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen. Our Father … Hail Mary … Glory … St. Anthony, pray for us.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, JANUARY 28)

Prayer for the Evening

In Christ is the source of life; in his light, we see light:
let us give thanks and praise.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

A noble son of noble race

And born of house enriched with fame,

The youthful Thomas, led by grace,

Within the Preachers’ Order came.

Applaud, O Mother Church, and praise

The happy end that Thomas made:

By merit of Life’s word and ways

He reached the joys that never fade.

Then be to Father and to Son

And Holy Spirit praise confessed;

May we through merit Thomas won

Be joined in heaven with the blest.

CANTICLE (Sirach 14:20-21, 24-27; 15:4-6)

Whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (Jn 3:21)

Saint Thomas lived in the truth of Christ and so came to know the incomparable light of God’s revelation. That was his unfailing joy.

Happy the man who meditates on wisdom,

and reflects on knowledge;

Who ponders her ways in his heart,

and understands her paths;

Who encamps near her house,

and fastens his tent pegs next to her walls;

Who pitches his tent beside her,

and lives as her welcome neighbor;

Who builds his nest in her leafage,

and lodges in her branches;

Who takes shelter with her from the heat,

and dwells in her home.

He will lean upon her and not fall,

he will trust in her and not be put to shame.

She will exalt him above his fellows;

in the assembly she will make him eloquent.

Joy and gladness he will find,

an everlasting name inherit.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Wisdom 6:22)

Now what Wisdom is, and how she came to be, I shall relate;/ and I shall hide no secrets from you,/ But from the very beginning I shall search out/ and bring to light knowledge of her,/ nor shall I diverge from the truth.

Light produces every kind of goodness

and righteousness and truth. (Eph 5:9)

Canticle of Mary

God has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in Christ. (cf. Eph 1:9)

Marian Antiphon

Antiphon for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, January 1

The root of Jesse has budded,

a star has arisen from Jacob;

a Virgin has brought forth the Savior;

we praise you, our God.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
