PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Meter: 88 88 with Refrain

The great O Antiphons, verses traditionally sung before and after the Canticle of Mary each evening at Vespers, begin this evening. The popular Advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” paraphrases them.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

O come, thou Wisdom from on high,

Who orders all things mightily;

To us the path of knowledge show,

And teach us in her ways to go.

R/Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel!

Canticle (Zephaniah 3:14-18a)

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! (Rom 11:33)

God sent his only Son to recreate through his life and death of loving obedience the world created in wisdom and disrupted by sin. The extraordinary generosity of God is itself the most powerful sign that God’s wisdom is far beyond our own.

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion!

sing joyfully, O Israel!

Be glad and exult with all your heart,

O daughter Jerusalem!

The Lord has removed the judgment against you,

he has turned away your enemies;

The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst,

you have no further misfortune to fear.

On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem:

Fear not, O Zion, be not discouraged!

The Lord, your God, is in your midst,

a mighty savior;

He will rejoice over you with gladness,

and renew you in his love,

He will sing joyfully because of you,

as one sings at festivals.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 24:3-6)

[Wisdom speaks:] “From the mouth of the Most High I came forth,/ and mistlike covered the earth./ In the highest heavens did I dwell,/ my throne on a pillar of cloud./ The vault of heaven I compassed alone,/ through the deep abyss I wandered./ Over waves of the sea, over all the land,/ over every people and nation I held sway.”

All wisdom comes from the Lord/

and with him it remains forever. (Sir 1:1)

CANTICLE OF MARY

O Wisdom, coming forth from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end, mightily and sweetly ordering all things: come and teach us the way of prudence. (Traditional O Antiphon)

INTERCESSIONS

We pray in hope to Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God. (cf. 1 Cor 1:24)

R/Come, Lord Jesus!

You created the world in wisdom:

– in wisdom may we forge the pattern of our lives. R/

You redeemed the world by the wisdom of the cross:

– in wisdom may we turn from selfishness and sin to love. R/

You order all things according to your wisdom:

– in wisdom may we seek and do your will. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, give us a spirit of wisdom and revelation resulting in knowledge of him. Amen. (cf. Eph 1:17)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity of Christmas, December 25

This day a Virgin inviolate

has brought forth God for us,

clothed in tender members,

whom she was found worthy to suckle;

let us all adore him,

who has come to save us.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Try Mother Teresa’s 5-second prayer to Mary for when you need support

0

Have this prayer at hand throughout your day.

Two of the Church’s most powerful female intercessors have to be St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta and the Virgin Mary. Throughout Mother Teresa’s long life on earth, she fully devoted herself to helping others. There were still times she needed a little divine help. The person that she often turned to was our Blessed Mother. This is evident in Mother Teresa’s 5-second prayer to Mary. You can say this prayer anytime you feel tired, overwhelmed, or distressed.

There are many quotes attesting to Mother Teresa’s love for Mary. This particular quote reveals not only her own vulnerability; like all mothers today but how she got the support she needed.

Here is Mother Teresa’s 5-second prayer to Mary for when you need support

If you ever feel distressed during your day — call upon our Lady — just say this simple prayer: ‘Mary, Mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now.’ I must admit

— this prayer has never failed me.

The simple prayer is not only easy to remember, it’s one you can say at any moment of the day. Whether you’re trying to manage unruly kids or dealing with a difficult job at work, it’s a reminder to call on Mary your mother as you might call on your earthly mother. However, the real beauty of this prayer is that when you choose to say it, you’re honoring two mothers of the Church.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. José Manyanet y Vives

Priest devoted to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Priest and Founder (1833-1901)

His life

+ José Manyanet was born in Tremp, Spain, in 1833. The son of peasant farmers, he began seminary studies at the age of twelve and was ordained a priest in 1859.

+ Following his ordination, he spent five years working in his hometown and, later, served in Barcelona. He was a well-known confessor, spiritual director, and catechist.

+ With the approval of his bishop, José established two new religious communities: the Sons of the Holy Family and the Missionary Daughters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. These communities promoted the honor and example of the Holy Family through Catholic education and in parochial ministry.

+ He also published several books and created a new magazine, La Sagrada Familia. José also dreamed of building a temple dedicated to the Holy Family in Barcelona. The great architect Antonio Gaudi (who is himself a candidate for beatification) took on the project—begun in 1883 and still not finished—and which is now throughout the world as the Basilica of Sagrada Familia.

+ In his ministry, it is said that he never turned away a child in need of education and he always made time to visit the poor and the sick.

+ After suffering from poor health for several years, José Manyanet died on December 17, 1901; he was canonized in 2004.

Note: In the privileged days from December 17 to 23, the texts provided for prayer and reflection will be the “O” Antiphons, which are recited during Evening Prayer on each of these days. The closing prayer for each day will be the collect for the Mass of the day.

For prayer and reflection

O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation.

Prayer

O God, Creator and Redeemer of human nature,

who willed that your Word should take flesh

in an ever-virgin womb,

look with favor on our prayers,

that your Only Begotten Son,

having taken to himself our humanity,

may be pleased to grant us a share in his divinity.

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord comes! Come, let us pray.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Come, quickly come, dread Judge of all;

For, awful though thine advent be,

All shadows from the truth will fall,

And falsehood die, in sight of thee:

Come, quickly come: for doubt and fear

Like clouds dissolve when thou are near.

Come, quickly come, great King of all;

Reign all around us, and within;

Let sin no more our souls enthrall,

Let pain and sorrow die with sin;

Come, quickly come: for thou alone

Can make thy scattered people one.

PSALM 50:1-6

The coastlands see, and fear;/ the ends of the earth tremble:/ these things are near, they come to pass. (Is 41:5)

The time grows short, the messenger’s cry urgent: the Lord is very near! Those who hope to delay his coming until “later, when I have time to get ready” find this late Advent cry disconcerting. Those who look for him not only in the past but in the present and the future rejoice at the news: God’s promises are kept within the boundaries of time.

The God of gods, the Lord,

has spoken and summoned the earth,

from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Out of Zion’s perfect beauty he shines.

Our God comes, he keeps silence no longer.

Before him fire devours,

around him tempest rages.

He calls on the heavens and the earth

to witness his judgment of his people.

“Summon before me my people

who made covenant with me by sacrifice.”

The heavens proclaim his justice,

for God himself is the judge.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Chronicles 16:33-36)

Then shall all the trees of the forest exult/ before the Lord, for he comes:/ he comes to rule the earth.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,/ for his kindness endures forever;/ And say, “Save us, O God, our savior,/ gather us and deliver us from the nations,/ That we may give thanks to your holy name/ and glory in praising you.”

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,/ through all eternity!/ Let all the people say, Amen! Alleluia.

Your kindness should be known to all.

The Lord is near. (Phil 4:5)

Canticle of Zechariah

Near is the great day of the Lord,/ near and very swiftly coming. (Zep 1:14)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

As we enter into the final stages of Advent, let us pray with eager hearts for the coming of the Lord:

R/Come, O Lord, in beauty!

To those who have lost hope:

– come in faithfulness to your promises. R/

To those who have lost sight of any goal but material gain:

– come bearing the gift of true life. R/

To those who think you long ago and far away:

– come in the experience of the present. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

God of promises given and promises kept, you said long ago that you would send us one who would be both King and Messiah. Come to meet us in our preparation for the celebration of his birth, that we may see you in him who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16)

Prayer for the Evening

The reign of God is at hand: come, let us rejoice!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Look up, O drooping hearts, today,

The King is very near;

O cast your griefs and fears away,

For, lo, your help is here!

Hope on, O broken hearts, at last

The King comes in his might;

He loved us in the ages past

When we lay wrapped in night.

PSALM 9:8-13

Turn to me and be safe,/ all you ends of the earth,/ for I am God; there is no other! (Is 45:22)

The people of John the Baptist’s day expected some other God than the one who came in human flesh not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. His might is love—a power that the world of our day does not yet appreciate as strength rather than weakness.

The Lord sits enthroned for ever.

He has set up his throne for judgment;

he will judge the world with justice,

he will judge the peoples with his truth.

For the oppressed let the Lord be a stronghold,

a stronghold in times of distress.

Those who know your name will trust you:

you will never forsake those who seek you.

Sing psalms to the Lord who dwells in Zion.

Proclaim his mighty works among the peoples;

for the Avenger of blood has remembered them,

has not forgotten the cry of the poor.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 4:18-19)

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,/ because he has anointed me/ to bring glad tidings to the poor./ He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives/ and recovery of sight to the blind,/ to let the oppressed go free,/ and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

The people who walked in darkness/

have seen a great light;/ Upon those who dwelt

in the land of gloom/ a light has shone. (Is 9:1)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Jesus said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” (cf. Lk 4:21)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

in every generation.

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

The Lord will judge with justice, setting right all wrongs. In faith let us pray:

R/You will never forsake those who seek you.

For the poor:

– may the generosity of others be a sign to them that the Gospel is truth. R/

For captives of every kind:

– may the compassion of those who work in prisons and courts, in rehabilitation programs and health

care institutions bring them your gift of freedom. R/

For the blind of eye, the blind of mind, and the blind of heart:

– may the light of your people’s lives shine upon their darkness and give them hope. R/

For the oppressed:

– may the courage of those who work for justice proclaim to them that your reign is at hand. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the Lord, our God, bless us in all our works and undertakings. Amen. (cf. Dt 15:10)

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

A beautiful prayer to St. Joseph in this his year: “To you, O blessed Joseph”

Pope Leo XIII in 1889 suggested that it be added to the end of the Rosary, especially in October.

In this Year of St. Joseph called by Pope Francis, there is an opportunity for a plenary indulgence with the recitation of approved prayers to the saint. The Vatican’s office of indulgences mentioned as one example a prayer that goes back to 1889, and Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical Quamquam pluries.

That pope asked that this prayer be added to the end of the Rosary, especially during the month of October, which is dedicated to the Rosary. If prayed after the Rosary, it could be said after the Salve Regina and concluding prayer.

The US bishops note that it can also be used to conclude other Marian devotions.

Now it’s being highlighted as a devotion that is especially apt for seeking a plenary indulgence on Wednesdays, other days devoted to St. Joseph, or any day during this Holy Year of St. Joseph.

Prayer

To you, O blessed Joseph,

do we come in our tribulation,

and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse,

we confidently invoke your patronage also.

Through that charity which bound you

to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God

and through the paternal love

with which you embraced the Child Jesus,

we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance

which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood,

and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family,

defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ;

O most loving father, ward off from us

every contagion of error and corrupting influence;

O our most mighty protector, be kind to us

and from heaven assist us in our struggle

with the power of darkness.

As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril,

so now protect God’s Holy Church

from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity;

shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection,

so that, supported by your example and your aid,

we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness,

and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16)

Prayer for the Morning

Love and truth walk in God’s presence:

come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

When the King shall come again

All his power revealing,

Splendour shall announce his reign,

Life and joy and healing:

Earth no longer in decay,

Hope no more frustrated;

This is God’s redemption-day

Longingly awaited.

Strengthen feeble hands and knees;

Fainting hearts, be cheerful!

God who comes for such as these

Seeks and saves the fearful.

Deaf ears hear the silent tongues

Sing away their weeping;

Blind eyes see the lifeless ones

Walking, running, leaping.

PSALM 89:12-17

Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard.” (cf. Lk 7:22)

We are not asked to put our faith in words alone but in all the signs that Jesus worked and works still in our midst to show us that the reign of God is real and is the source of all joy for a world that still cannot quite imagine the wholeness salvation offers.

The heavens are yours, the world is yours.

It is you who founded the earth and all it holds;

it is you who created the North and the South.

Tabor and Hermon shout with joy at your name.

Yours is a mighty arm, O Lord;

your hand is strong, your right hand ready.

Justice and right are the pillars of your throne,

love and truth walk in your presence.

Happy the people who acclaim such a king,

who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,

who find their joy every day in your name,

who make your justice the source of their bliss.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 35:4-6)

Say to those whose hearts are frightened:/ Be strong, fear not!/ Here is your God,/ he comes with vindication;/ With divine recompense/ he comes to save you./ Then will the eyes of the blind be opened,/ the ears of the deaf be cleared;/ Then will the lame leap like a stag,/ then the tongue of the dumb will sing.

Streams will burst forth in the desert,/ and rivers in the steppe.

If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts! (cf. Ps 95:7-8)

Intercessions

As morning dawns, we pray:

R/Justice and right are the pillars of your throne.

You come to judge in love and in truth:

– may we rejoice in the hope of your coming. R/

You come to release all those bound by sin, sickness, and suffering:

– may we find the lamp of your love shining in dark places. R/

You come as the Morning Star rising on a darkened world:

– may we watch for you with hope and work for the coming of the light. R/

You come as Good News for the poor:

– may we seek you where you are to be found. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Great God of the universe, you sent your only Son as light and hope for all peoples. May our lives testify to your love and your truth as we prepare to celebrate the wonder of his coming, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Consecrate yourself to the Child Jesus this Christmas

“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

The Christmas season is a beautiful time of the year and presents a perfect opportunity to renew our love and devotion to the Child Jesus. We often forget about this devotion, as the Church primarily focuses on the adult life of Jesus and his sacrifice of love on the cross.

However, it is an important devotion as it reminds us of Jesus’ words to his disciples.

“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3)

One way to foster this devotion is to consecrate yourself to the Child Jesus, giving to him your entire self, that he may do with it as he sees fit. This is a similar devotion that St. Therese of Lisieux practiced during her life, as she notes in her autobiography.

I had offered myself to the Child Jesus to be His little plaything. I told Him not to treat me like one of those precious toys which children only look at and dare not touch, but to treat me like a little ball of no value, that could be thrown on the ground, kicked about, pierced, left in a corner, or pressed to His Heart just as it might please Him. In a word I wished to amuse the Holy child and to let Him play with me as He fancied.

Below is a prayer of consecration that is often prayed before an image of the Infant of Prague, but can also be prayed before any manger scene. It refers to the above quote of St. Therese and places a person’s life in the hand of the Child. May we all remember Jesus’ words to “become like children” and foster a child-like simplicity that will lead us to heaven.

O sweet Child Jesus, who did manifest Your power and mercy through a little waxen figure of Yourself in Prague, I wish to proclaim Your Royal dominion over my soul and body. Deign, O Little King of Heaven, to watch over my work, bless my enterprises both temporal and spiritual, to dispel my cares, to sanctify my joys, to alleviate my sufferings.

Grant me pardon for all the offences I have committed against You, for I know that You are good and merciful to the penitent sinner. Yours I am. Yours I wish to remain, ever loving and adoring You, Little King of Heaven. Take possession of my whole being; do with me whatever You will. I desire, like Saint Theresa, Your Little Flower of Carmel, to be Your playmate. Make me love You more and more, that one day I will enjoy Your sweet little face smiling from Your throne in Heaven.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us prepare with joy

to receive Christ our Lord.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O heavenly Word, eternal Light,

Begotten of the Father’s might,

Who, in these latter days, are born

For succor to a world forlorn;

Our hearts enlighten from above,

And kindle with your own true love;

That we, who hear your call today,

May cast earth’s vanities away.

And when as Judge you then draw nigh,

The secrets of all hearts to try;

When sinners meet their chosen doom,

And saints attain their heavenly home;

O let us not, for evil past,

Be driven from your face at last;

But with the blessèd evermore

Behold you, love you, and adore.

PSALM 119:17-24

Which of the two did his father’s will? (Mt 21:31)

Who will truly welcome God’s reign when it comes? Not those who pay lip service to God’s will, says Jesus, but those who truly carry it out. Our obedience to God is our best preparation for the coming of Christ. Advent is not a spectator sport but a way of life in service of the Gospel.

Bless your servant and I shall live

and obey your word.

Open my eyes that I may see

the wonders of your law.

I am a pilgrim on the earth;

show me your commands.

My soul is ever consumed

as I long for your decrees.

You threaten the proud, the accursed,

who turn from your commands.

Relieve me from scorn and contempt

for I do your will.

Though princes sit plotting against me

I ponder on your rulings.

Your will is my delight;

your statutes are my counselors.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Ezekiel 33:31-33)

My people come to you as people always do; they sit down before you and hear your words, but they will not obey them, for lies are on their lips and their desires are fixed on dishonest gain. For them you are only a ballad singer, with a pleasant voice and a clever touch. They listen to your words, but they will not obey them. But when it comes—and it is surely coming!—they shall know that there was a prophet among them.

Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” but not do

what I command? (Lk 6:46)

Canticle of Mary

Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. (Mt 7:21)

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Marian Antiphon

Antiphon for the Solemnity of Christmas, December 25

This day a Virgin inviolate

has brought forth God for us,

clothed in tender members,

whom she was found worthy to suckle;

let us all adore him,

who has come to save us.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord hears the cry of the poor:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

God in his glory shall appear,

When Zion he builds and repairs;

He shall regard and lend his ear

Unto the needy’s humble prayers.

The needy’s prayer he will not scorn.

All times shall this be on record:

And generations yet unborn

Shall praise and magnify the Lord.

What grateful offering shall we bring?

What shall we render to the Lord?

Loud hallelujah let us sing,

And praise his name on every chord.

CANTICLE (1 Sm 2:1-2, 7-8b, 8d-10)

I will leave as a remnant in your midst/ a people humble and lowly,/ Who shall take refuge in the name of the Lord. (Zep 3:12)

The prophet Zephaniah makes clear that the world is in sore need of the redeeming presence of Christ who will be revealed not among the powerful who use their power for evil but among the poor and powerless who seek the Lord in poverty of heart. These are the remnant who remain faithful through all hardships.

My heart exults in the Lord,

my horn is exalted in my God.

I have swallowed up my enemies;

I rejoice in my victory.

There is no Holy One like the Lord;

there is no Rock like our God.

The Lord makes poor and makes rich,

he humbles, he also exalts.

He raises the needy from the dust;

from the ash heap he lifts up the poor,

to seat them with nobles

and make a glorious throne their heritage.

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

and he has set the world upon them.

He will guard the footsteps of his faithful ones,

but the wicked shall perish in the darkness.

For not by strength does man prevail;

the Lord’s foes shall be shattered.

The Most High in heaven thunders;

the Lord judges the ends of the earth.

Now may he give strength to his king

and exalt the horn of his anointed!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 26:4-7)

Trust in the Lord forever!/ For the Lord is an eternal Rock./ He humbles those in high places,/ and the lofty city he brings down;/ He tumbles it to the ground,/ levels it with the dust./ It is trampled underfoot by the needy,/ by the footsteps of the poor.

The way of the just is smooth;/ the path of the just you make level.

Therefore, wait for me, says the Lord. (Zep 3:8a)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

In my pastures the poor shall eat,/ and the needy lie down in safety. (Is 14:30a)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

In days when public attention concentrates powerfully on the use of money, let us pray to him who came as gift to all in need:

R/You will never forsake those who seek you.

For the poor who are oppressed by the commercialism of the season:

– may they be filled with the liberating power of your gifts. R/

For all those who are oppressed by the pressures of the season:

– may they be filled with your peace. R/

For all those who are oppressed by the prospect of loneliness at this season:

– may they be filled with the comfort of friendship and companionship and of your presence. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

Lord Jesus Christ, you hear the cry of the poor. Hear us in our poverty as we bring before you our need for your redeeming love, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
