PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10)

Our Lady of Loreto

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord fulfills his promises:

let us place all our hope in him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

I’ll sing a hymn to Mary

The Mother of my God,

The Virgin of all virgins,

Of David’s Royal blood.

O teach me, holy Mary,

A loving song to frame,

When wicked men blaspheme thee,

To love and bless thy name.

O Lily of the Valley,

O mystic Rose what tree

Or flower, e’en the fairest,

Is half so fair as thee?

O let me, though so lowly,

Recite my Mother’s fame:

When wicked men blaspheme thee,

I’ll love and bless thy name.

O noble Tower of David,

Of gold and ivory,

The Ark of God’s Own promise,

The Gate of Heaven to me;

To live, and not to love thee,

Would fill my soul with shame:

When wicked men blaspheme thee,

I’ll love and bless thy name.

When troubles dark afflict me,

In sorrow and in care,

Thy light doth ever guide me,

O beauteous Morning Star.

So I’ll be ever ready

Thy goodly help to claim,

When wicked men blaspheme thee,

I’ll love and bless thy name.

PSALM 84:2-6, 11

I am going to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2)

“Since the Middle Ages veneration for the Holy House of Loreto has been the origin of that particular shrine which still today is visited by many faithful pilgrims in order to nourish their faith in the Word of God made flesh for us. This shrine recalls the mystery of the Incarnation, leading all those who visit it to consider ‘the fullness of time,’ when God sent his Son, born of a woman.” (Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments)

How lovely is your dwelling place,

Lord, God of hosts.

My soul is longing and yearning,

is yearning for the courts of the Lord.

My heart and my soul ring out their joy

to God, the living God.

The sparrow herself finds a home

and the swallow a nest for her brood;

she lays her young by your altars,

Lord of hosts, my king and my God.

They are happy, who dwell in your house,

for ever singing your praise.

They are happy, whose strength is in you,

in whose hearts are the roads to Zion.

One day within your courts

is better than a thousand elsewhere.

The threshold of the house of God

I prefer to the dwellings of the wicked.

Glory to the Father…

Word of God (Luke 2:51–52)

He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before God and man.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God:

that we may be made worthy

of the promises of Christ.

Canticle of Zechariah

The virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall call him Immanuel (Is 7:14)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Let us rely with great confidence on the intercession of the Mother of God:

R/Mother of fair love, help your children!

Mother of Christ, pray for all who seek to follow your Son,

– that they may be united with him for all eternity. R/

Mother of the Church, pray for all members of your Son’s Mystical Body,

– that they may be always united in charity and truth. R/

Mother of Divine Grace, pray for poor sinners,

– that the divine assistance may lead them to true sanctity. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father…

Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord God, that we, your servants, may enjoy perpetual health of mind and body; and by the intercession of the Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, may be delivered from present sorrow, and obtain eternal joy. Through Christ our Lord.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9)

Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin

Prayer for the Morning

Arise and greet the Lord with joy!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Savior, rend the heavens wide

And once again this Advent-tide

Unbar the portals, Lord, we pray,

That hold thee back from man today.

Drop dew, you heavens, from above:

As dew, O Savior, is your love.

O rainclouds, break and rain the Just,

The King who rules o’er Jacob’s house.

Awake, O earth, break forth in spring!

To crown this great awakening,

Bloom once again, O Flower divine

And brightest Son of Jesse’s line.

O shining Sun, O lovely Star,

May we behold thee from afar!

O Sun, arise! Without your light,

We shall remain in darkest night.

PSALM 119:25-32

I will refresh the weary soul; every soul that languishes I will replenish. (Jer 31:25)

Christ comes in the vigor of new life. The Good News of his coming gives heart to those who have grown weary under life’s burdens and reinvigorates those who have lost a sense of Gospel joy. Let us welcome him with renewed enthusiasm for his presence in our midst, and run with delight in his footsteps.

My soul lies in the dust;

by your word revive me.

I declared my ways and you answered:

teach me your statutes.

Make me grasp the way of your precepts

and I will muse on your wonders.

My soul pines away with grief;

by your word raise me up.

Keep me from the way of error

and teach me your law.

I have chosen the way of truth

with your decrees before me.

I bind myself to do your will;

Lord, do not disappoint me.

I will run the way of your commands;

you give freedom to my heart.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Hebrews 12:3)

Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.

You have endurance and have suffered for my name, and you have not grown weary. (Rv 2:3)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Lift up your voices to glorify the Lord,/ though he is still beyond your power to praise;/ Extol him with renewed strength,/ and weary not, though you cannot reach the end. (Sir 43:31-32)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

Glory to the Father…

Christ comes! Let us pray:

R/Renew us in your love.

When we grow sad amid life’s troubles: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God of power and life, you sent your Son to renew us in the joy of the Resurrection. Pour forth upon us once again the Spirit of your love, and grant us strength to live the Gospel with energy and enthusiasm, that we may bear true witness to the abundance of the life you give, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8)

Prayer for the Evening

On this feast of Mary Immaculate,

let us give thanks and praise to God!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Rejoice, all-holy Virgin,

predestined in delight,

In beauty you were chosen

and blameless in his sight.

For in the time of fullness

to bring all things as one

The Lord bestowed his Wisdom

in Jesus Christ your Son.

Rejoice, all-holy Virgin,

humanity’s new Eve,

As Mother of the living,

his grace you did receive.

You bore the mighty Victor

who crushed the serpent’s head,

To him be ev’ry honor,

and ev’ry praise be said.

Rejoice, all-holy Virgin,

and magnify the Lord,

The Father, Son, and Spirit,

the Three in One adored.

We join your song of praises

to him whom you believed

And ever call you blessed,

in holiness conceived.

PSALM 48:2-6, 9-12

Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord. (Zec 2:14)

Through her Immaculate Conception, the Blessed Virgin Mary, true daughter of Zion, the holy city of God, is made ready to receive Emmanuel, God-with-us, in the temple of her womb.

The Lord is great and worthy to be praised

in the city of our God.

His holy mountain rises in beauty,

the joy of all the earth.

Mount Zion, true pole of the earth,

the Great King’s city!

God, in the midst of its citadels,

has shown himself its stronghold.

For the kings assembled together,

together they advanced.

They saw; at once they were astounded;

dismayed, they fled in fear.

As we have heard, so we have seen

in the city of our God,

in the city of the Lord of hosts

which God upholds for ever.

O God, we ponder your love

within your temple.

Your praise, O God, like your name

reaches the ends of the earth.

With justice your right hand is filled.

Mount Zion rejoices;

the people of Judah rejoice

at the sight of your judgments.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Kings 8:10-13)

The cloud filled the temple of the Lord so that the priests could no longer minister because of the cloud, since the Lord’s glory had filled the temple of the Lord. Then Solomon said, “The Lord intends to dwell in the dark cloud; I have truly built you a princely house, a dwelling where you may abide forever.”

The glory of Lebanon shall come to you:/ the cypress, the plane and the pine,/ To bring beauty to my sanctuary,/ and glory to the place where I set my feet. (Is 60:13)

CANTICLE OF MARY

You are the glory of Jerusalem,/ the surpassing joy of Israel;/ you are the splendid boast of our people. (Jdt 15:9)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Through the intercession of Mary, the chosen vessel of the Holy Spirit, we pray:

R/O God, hear the Virgin’s prayer.

Tower of ivory, pray for us who are immersed in the marketplaces of the world,

– that we may learn to withdraw daily into God’s presence in prayer. R/

Ark of the Covenant, pray for us who have been baptized into Christ,

– that we may live in full fidelity to his covenant of love. R/

Gate of heaven, pray for the dying and the faithful departed,

– that God may bring them to dwell for ever in the heavenly Jerusalem. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May God’s holy Church be stamped with the seal of perfection,/ of complete wisdom and perfect beauty. Amen. (cf. Ez 28:12)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity of Christmas, December 25

This day a Virgin inviolate

has brought forth God for us,

clothed in tender members,

whom she was found worthy to suckle;

let us all adore him,

who has come to save us.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8)

The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Patronal Feastday of the United States of America

Prayer for the Morning

As we rejoice in the Immaculate Conception

of the Blessed Virgin Mary, let us give God

thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Holy light on earth’s horizon,

Star of hope to those who fall,

Light amid a world of shadows,

Dawn of God’s design for all,

Chosen from eternal ages,

You alone of all our race,

By your Son’s atoning merits

Were conceived in perfect grace.

Hail, beloved of the Father,

Mother of his only Son,

Mystic bride of Love eternal,

Hail, O fair and spotless one!

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 61:10; 62:2-3, 4b-5

You are all-beautiful, my beloved,/ and there is no blemish in you. (Sg 4:7)

The Virgin Mary, chosen Mother of the Redeemer, is robed in the splendor of her stainless innocence, clothed with the beauty of Christ, and prepared to receive him in her womb.

I rejoice heartily in the Lord,

in my God is the joy of my soul;

for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation,

and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,

like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem,

like a bride bedecked with her jewels.

Nations shall behold your vindication,

and all kings your glory;

you shall be called by a new name

pronounced by the mouth of the Lord.

You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the Lord,

a royal diadem held by your God.

You shall be called “My Delight,”

and your land “Espoused.”

For the Lord delights in you,

and makes your land his spouse.

As a young man marries a virgin,

your Builder shall marry you;

and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride

so shall your God rejoice in you.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Judith 13:17-18)

“Blessed are you, our God, who today have brought to nought the enemies of your people.”… “Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth; and blessed be the Lord God, the creator of heaven and earth.”

O Virgin Mary, you are all-beautiful!

INTERCESSIONS

With joy in our hearts, let us pray through the intercession of the chosen Mother of God:

R/Lord, hear your Mother’s prayer!

Mary, conceived without sin, pray for all sinners,

– that we may be made holy by the Birth, Death, and Resurrection of your Son. R/

Mother most pure, pray for all those in need of purity of heart,

– that we may will always what God wills. R/

Mother of divine grace, pray for all those who seek God,

– that we may find him in the approaching celebration of Christmas. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, you preserved the Virgin from all stain of sin through the redemptive death of your Son, and thus you made of her a worthy dwelling place for him. Through her intercession, free us from all sin, that we may celebrate with hearts made pure the mystery of his birth, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The meaning of the celebration

+ On this day, the Church meditates on the great mystery that, from the moment of her conception, the Virgin Mary was preserved from every stain of original sin.

+ Based on the teachings of great saints and theologians through the centuries, especially Blessed John Duns Scotus, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was solemnly defined by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854.

+ It is under her title of “Immaculate Conception” that Mary is honored as the patron of the United States of America.

For prayer and reflection

“We thank you, Immaculate Mother,

for reminding us that, because of Jesus Christ’s love,

we are no longer slaves to sin,

but free, free to love, to love one another.”—From a Prayer by Pope Francis in honor of the Immaculate Conception

Spiritual Bonus

On this day we also remember Saint Narcisa de Jesus Martillo Moran. Born in Ecuador to a poor family, she worked as a seamstress in her early life to support her siblings and provide for the poor. She spent the final years of her life living with a community of Dominican Nuns in Lima, Peru, dedicating herself to prayer and service, although she herself never took vows and remained a lay person her whole life. Saint Narcissa died in 1869 and was canonized in 2018.

O God,

who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin

prepared a worthy dwelling for your Son,

grant, we pray, that as you preserved her from every stain

by virtue of the Death of your Son, which you foresaw,

so, through her intercession,

we, too, may be cleansed and admitted to your presence.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, DECEMBER 7)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Let us praise God for ever

through Mary immaculate!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Rejoice, all-holy Virgin,

preserved by saving grace,

Conceived without a blemish,

without a sinful trace.

For by the blood of Jesus,

salvation from his side,

You first received his merits

that flowed in passion’s tide.

Rejoice, all-holy Virgin,

prepared for fame renowned,

The temple of the Most High,

in you the Lord is found.

You are the boast of Zion,

the ark of finest gold,

The holy of all holies,

the throne of him foretold.

PSALM 45:11-18

On the Lord’s right stands the queen in gold of Ophir. (cf. Ps 45:10)

Mary is the House of Gold, the resplendent temple prepared by God as a fit dwelling place for his Son. By her faith, more precious than gold itself, she furnished her heart to receive him in pure love.

Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words:

forget your own people and your father’s house.

So will the king desire your beauty:

He is your lord, pay homage to him.

And the people of Tyre shall come with gifts,

the richest of the people shall seek your favor.

The daughter of the king is clothed with splendor,

her robes embroidered with pearls set in gold.

She is led to the king with her maiden companions.

They are escorted amid gladness and joy;

they pass within the palace of the king.

Sons shall be yours in place of your fathers:

you will make them princes over all the earth.

May this song make your name for ever remembered

May the peoples praise you from age to age.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Kings 6:19-21a, 22a)

In the innermost part of the temple was located the sanctuary to house the ark of the Lord’s covenant, twenty cubits long, twenty wide, and twenty high. Solomon overlaid the interior of the temple with pure gold. The entire temple was overlaid with gold so that it was completely covered with it.

You shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, as on a seal engraving, “Sacred to the Lord.” (Ex 28:36)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The branches shall so spring from it that the whole will form but a single piece of pure beaten gold. (cf. Ex 25:36)

With reverent and loving trust, let us pray through the intercession of Mary our Mother:

R/Lord, hear your Mother’s prayer.

Mystical Rose, pray for all those who are deceived by passing beauty,

– that we may discern true worth in making choices. R/

House of Gold, pray for all those who seek false treasures,

– that we may lay up treasure in heaven by the choices we make. R/

Queen of all saints, pray for all who grow confused in seeking holiness,

– that we may keep our feet firmly fixed on the Gospel path. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the genuineness of our faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Amen. (cf. 1 Pt 1:7)

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord will give us his favor and glory:

come, let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O comfort my people and calm all their fear,

And tell them the time of salvation draws near.

O tell them I come to remove all their shame.

Then they will forever give praise to my name.

Proclaim to the cities of Judah my word;

That “gentle yet strong is the hand of the Lord.”

I rescue the captives, my people defend

And bring them to justice and joy without end.

“All mountains and hills shall become as a plain

For vanished are mourning and hunger and pain

And never again shall these war against you.

Behold I come quickly to make all things new.”

PSALM 84:6-13

I will go before you/ and level the mountains. (Is 45:2)

In the Incarnation, God comes not as accuser and judge but as comforter to a people bruised and broken by our sin. The Good Shepherd of today’s first reading shows us the face of God’s compassion.

They are happy, whose strength is in you,

in whose hearts are the roads to Zion.

As they go through the Bitter Valley

they make it a place of springs,

the autumn rain covers it with blessings.

They walk with ever growing strength,

they will see the God of gods in Zion.

O Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer,

give ear, O God of Jacob.

Turn your eyes, O God, our shield,

look on the face of your anointed.

One day within your courts

is better than a thousand elsewhere.

The threshold of the house of God

I prefer to the dwellings of the wicked.

For the Lord God is a rampart, a shield;

he will give us his favor and glory.

The Lord will not refuse any good

to those who walk without blame.

Lord, God of hosts,

happy the man who trusts in you!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Zechariah 1:16-17)

Therefore, says the Lord: I will turn to Jerusalem in mercy; my house shall be built in it, says the Lord of hosts, and a measuring line shall be stretched over Jerusalem. Proclaim further: Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity; the Lord will again comfort Zion, and again choose Jerusalem.

I, it is I who comfort you. (Is 51:12)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I fear no harm for you are at my side;/ your rod and staff give me courage. (Ps 23:4b)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity of Christmas, December 25

This day a Virgin inviolate

has brought forth God for us,

clothed in tender members,

whom she was found worthy to suckle;

let us all adore him,

who has come to save us.

Alma Redemptoris Mater, quae pervia caeli

porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,

surgere qui curat, populo: tu quae genuisti,

natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,

Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6)

Second Sunday of Advent

Prepare the way of the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

O comfort each believing heart,

Our ancient bondage ends!

The Lord himself shall take our part

And make, of sinners, friends.

Prepare for him a royal road,

Make smooth and straight his way,

Who comes to bear our weary load,

Our ransom price to pay.

Our life is brief as summer grass,

Our days are but a sigh;

We wither at the winds that pass

And fade and fall and die.

But safe in God’s almighty hand

Our souls are kept secure:

For evermore his word shall stand,

His covenant endure.

The very hills shall find a voice

To make his tidings heard.

In God and in his grace rejoice,

Receive his promised word.

O comfort each believing heart

Where God in Christ has come!

The Lord himself shall take our part

And lead his people home.

Canticle of  (Isaiah49:9b-13)

The Lord is our shepherd; there is nothing we shall want. (cf. Ps 23:1)

The herald’s voice cries out: prepare the way of the Lord. Upon that way, we go to meet the Lord as he comes to meet us. The way lies through our own hearts. Let us clear it of stumbling blocks, briars, and dust, that we may travel in freedom and joy and that we may not hinder the Lord’s coming to us.

Along the ways they shall find pasture,

on every bare height shall their pastures be.

They shall not hunger or thirst,

nor shall the scorching wind or the sun strike them;

For he who pities them leads them

and guides them beside springs of water.

I will cut a road through all my mountains,

and make my highways level.

See, some shall come from afar,

others from the north and the west,

and some from the land of Syene.

Sing out, O heavens, and rejoice, O earth,

break forth into song, you mountains.

For the Lord comforts his people

and shows mercy to his afflicted.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Baruch 5:5-7)

Up, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights;/ look to the east and see your children/ Gathered from the east and the west/ at the word of the Holy One,/ rejoicing that they are remembered by God./ Led away on foot by their enemies they left you:/ but God will bring them back to you/ borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones./ For God has commanded/ that every lofty mountain be made low,/ And that the age-old depths and gorges/ be filled to level ground,/ that Israel may advance secure in the glory of God.

The mountains melt under him/ and the valleys split open,/ Like wax before the fire,/ like water poured down a slope. (Mi 1:4)

Canticle of Zechariah

For see, the Lord comes forth from his place,/ he descends and treads upon the heights of the earth. (Mi 1:3)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Let us pray to Christ with joy at his coming:

R/You comfort your people and show mercy to your afflicted.

Hear the prayers of those who feel separated from

you: R/

Hear the prayers of those who fear your coming: R/

Hear the prayers of those who do not know that you have come and will come again: R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

God of glory, you prepare the way for your Son to come among us in mercy and in glory. Make straight his road in our hearts through this Advent season. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is our light: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Light-bearing Christ, come down to us,

And light in darkness sow;

Come down and save our fallen world

Whose sinful ways you know.

Prepare us for your light and truth,

Who watch and wait for you;

Restore our once lost dignity;

Come down and make us new.

Almighty Father, speak the word

Your children long to hear,

And with your Spirit dwell in us:

Lord God of love, draw near.

PSALM 106:1-5

As for me, in my justice I shall see your face/ and be filled, when I awake, with the sight of your glory. (Ps 17:15)

Christ is the light not of our eyes but of our minds. In Advent, we cry out in our darkness: “O Lord, make us see!” As Christ comes to us in Word and Sacrament, in prayer and in daily life, we do indeed begin to see the world differently by the light of faith. We see by his eyes rather than our own. And as we see, so we live.

O give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.

Who can tell the Lord’s mighty deeds?

Who can recount all his praise?

They are happy who do what is right,

who at all times do what is just.

O Lord, remember me

out of the love you have for your people.

Come to me, Lord, with your help

that I may see the joy of your chosen ones

and may rejoice in the gladness of your nation

and share the glory of your people.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 6:37)

Reflect on the precepts of the Lord,/ let his commandments be your constant meditation;/ Then he will enlighten your mind,/ and the wisdom you desire he will grant.

Have sight; your faith has saved you. (Lk 18:42)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I am the light of the world. (Jn 8:12)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

INTERCESSIONS

With joyful faith, we pray:

R/Christ our light, grant that we may see.

You light up the darkness of unbelief:

– grant faith to those who do not believe; strengthen the faith of those who do. R/

You reveal a world our selfishness cannot see:

– grant us insight into the needs of those around us. R/

You promise light eternal to all who believe:

– shine with love on those who have died. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

The Lord bless us and keep us!/ The Lord let his face shine upon us, and be gracious to us!/ The Lord look upon us kindly and give us peace! Amen. (cf. Nm 6:24-26)

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord has made known his salvation:

come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Behold a broken world, we pray,

Where want and war increase,

And grant us, Lord, in this our day,

The ancient dream of peace:

A dream of swords to sickles bent,

Of spears to scythe and spade,

The weapons of our warfare spent,

A world of peace remade.

O Prince of peace, who died to save,

A lost world to redeem,

And rose in triumph from the grave,

Behold our waking dream.

Bring, Lord, your better world to birth,

Your kingdom, love’s domain;

Where peace with God, and peace on earth,

And peace eternal reign.

PSALM 98

He who obeys me dwells in security,/ in peace, without fear of harm. (Prv 1:33)

What is so new about the promised “mountain of the Lord” is not that the wolf and the lamb are both there, but that the wolf remains a wolf and the lamb a lamb, and yet they dwell together without harm or hurt in God’s Kingdom. Under God’s rule, conversion and obedience do not mean the loss of identity but the discovery of our true identity as one in Christ.

Sing a new song to the Lord

for he has worked wonders.

His right hand and his holy arm

have brought salvation.

The Lord has made known his salvation;

has shown his justice to the nations.

He has remembered his truth and love

for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen

the salvation of our God.

Shout to the Lord, all the earth,

ring out your joy.

Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp

with the sound of music.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn

acclaim the King, the Lord.

Let the sea and all within it thunder;

the world, and all its peoples.

Let the rivers clap their hands

and the hills ring out their joy.

Rejoice at the presence of the Lord,

for he comes to rule the earth.

He will rule the world with justice

and the peoples with fairness.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 65:25)

The wolf and the lamb shall graze alike,/ and the lion shall eat hay like the ox/ [but the serpent’s food shall be dust]./ None shall hurt or destroy/ on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.

May the Lord bless you, holy mountain,

abode of justice! (Jer 31:23)

INTERCESSIONS

As we await with joy the One who will rule the world with justice, let us pray:

R/Come and rule over us, Prince of Peace!

You bring the spirit of wisdom and understanding:

– build bridges of understanding among those who differ. R/

You bring the spirit of counsel and strength:

– guide the strong to assist the weak. R/

You bring the spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord:

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God our Father, you have promised us peace in the kingdom won for us by your Son. Carve in our hearts a place of peace where all may be invited to dwell in your love, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
