Prayer for the Morning
Let us invoke the Lord:
in the morning, he hears our prayer!
Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!
HYMN
Who can compare with your holiness,
honor and glory?
Your wondrous deeds are the splendor
of your people’s story;
Your mighty arm
Saves your beloved from harm:
So shall the Lord reign for ever.
With constant love, O God, you set us free
and you fed us,
Bringing us safely to dwell in the land
where you led us,
Guarded by grace,
Planted in your holy place:
So shall the Lord reign for ever.
PSALM 5:2-4, 12-13
Over all, his glory will be shelter and protection:/ shade from the parching heat of day,/ refuge and cover from storm and rain. (Is 4:6)
To the Psalmist, the “glory” of God meant the sheltering, guiding, protecting cloud of light in which God accompanied his people across the desert and came to meet them in the place of worship.
To my words give ear, O Lord,
give heed to my groaning.
Attend to the sound of my cries,
my King and my God.
It is you whom I invoke, O Lord.
In the morning you hear me;
in the morning I offer you my prayer,
watching and waiting.
All those you protect shall be glad
and ring out their joy.
You shelter them; in you they rejoice,
those who love your name.
It is you who bless the just man, Lord:
you surround him with favor as with a shield.
Glory to the Father….
Word of God (Sirach 34:16)
The eyes of the Lord are upon those who love him;/ he is their mighty shield and strong support,/ A shelter from the heat, a shade from the noonday sun,/ a guard against stumbling, a help against falling.
My God is the rock where I take refuge;/ my shield,
my mighty help, my stronghold. (Ps 18:3)
CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH
You are a refuge to the poor,/ a refuge to the needy in distress;/ Shelter from the rain,/ shade from the heat. (Is 25:4)
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet
of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father…
