PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14)

Prayer for the Evening

Come, let us seek the Lord while he may be found,/

and call him while he is near! (cf. Is 55:6)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Receive, O Lord, in heaven above

Our prayers and supplications pure;

Give us a heart all full of love

And steady courage to endure.

Thy holy name our mouths confess,

Our tongues are harps to praise thy grace;

Forgive our sins and wickedness,

Who in this vigil seek thy face.

Let not our song become a sigh,

A wail of anguish and despair;

In loving-kindness, Lord most high,

Receive tonight our evening prayer.

O raise us in that day, that we

May sing, where all thy saints adore,

Praise to thy Father, and to thee,

And to thy Spirit, evermore.

PSALM 27:1, 4-5, 6b-9a, 11a, 13-14

Jesus was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. (cf. Mt 17:2)

For the Psalmist, God’s “face” was his mysterious presence in the luminous cloud that led the people through the desert and filled the meeting tent, the forerunner of the Temple. Jesus Christ is for us God’s human face, the visible sign of his presence and of his faithful, protective love.

The Lord is my light and my help;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

before whom shall I shrink?

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,

for this I long,

to live in the house of the Lord,

all the days of my life,

to savor the sweetness of the Lord,

to behold his temple.

For there he keeps me safe in his tent

in the day of evil.

He hides me in the shelter of his tent,

on a rock he sets me safe,

and I shall offer within his tent

a sacrifice of joy.

I will sing and make music for the Lord.

O Lord, hear my voice when I call;

have mercy and answer.

Of you my heart has spoken:

“Seek his face.”

It is your face, O Lord, that I seek;

hide not your face.

Instruct me, Lord, in your way;

on an even path lead me.

I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness

in the land of the living.

Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.

Hope in the Lord!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (2 Corinthians 3:18; 4:6)

All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit.

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ.

We seek your face, O Lord!

CANTICLE OF MARY

Now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. (Eph 5:8-9)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Prayer to awaken a universal love of the Eucharist

The prayer invokes the aid of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and asks her help to stir within the faithful devotion to the Eucharist.

The Eucharist is known as the “sacrament of love,” and was given to the Church to unite all people more closely to Jesus. However, the Eucharist is not widely appreciated, and many do not believe in the words of Jesus, that he is truly present under the appearances of bread and wine.

To help more people come to a deeper love of God in the Eucharist, here is a prayer to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament that asks for her help in achieving a wider devotion.

Virgin Mary, our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, glory of the Christian people, joy of the universal Church, salvation of the world; pray for us and awaken in all the faithful devotion and love of the Holy Eucharist in order that they may render themselves worthy to receive it daily.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14)

Saint Callistus I

Prayer for the Morning

Let us enter God’s presence rejoicing!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Today your gate stands open,

And all who enter in

Shall find a Father’s welcome

And pardon for their sin.

The past shall be forgotten,

A present joy be given,

A future home be promised,

A glorious crown in heaven.

O all-embracing Mercy,

O ever-open Door,

What would I do without you

Who led the way before?

When joy seems all too distant,

And all too near, despair,

I know one gate is open,

One ear will hear my prayer.

PSALM 100

Jesus said: “I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” (cf. Jn 10:9)

The gate to the Lord’s sheepfold is narrow and cut in the shape of a cross. Yet Christ leads the flock safely through to the place of pasture he has prepared for us.

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with gladness.

Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God.

He made us, we belong to him,

we are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.

Enter his courts with songs of praise.

Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,

eternal his merciful love.

He is faithful from age to age.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 7:13-14)

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.

Jesus, lead the way!

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Behold, I have left an open door before you, which no one can close. (Rv 3:8)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us stand before Christ, our gateway to eternal life, and knock with confidence in prayer:

R/Eternal is your merciful love!

Your cross is the gate to the heavenly city:

– give us the courage to follow you through it today. R/

You have gone before us to prepare a place for us:

– come back to travel with us on this day’s journey. R/

You are the cause of our joy:

– free us from all those burdens that stifle our gladness in you. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord, you have told us to knock and the door would be opened to us. You yourself are the doorway into everlasting joy. Open your way before us as we set out on this day’s journey and guide us to our journey’s end, that, when evening comes, we may enter the courts of your presence rejoicing, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13)

Prayer for the Evening

What marvels the Lord has worked for us!

Let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

In royal robes of splendor,

Before the great King’s feet,

The princes of his kingdom,

The crowned Apostles, meet;

To him their songs adoring

With heart and tongue they bring,

Pure hearts and mighty voices—

E’en as the angels sing.

Christ’s burden light they proffer,

His easy yoke proclaim;

The seed of life they scatter,

That all may own his name.

The earth brought forth and budded,

Where’er their ploughshare ran,

And fruits of increase followed

The faith of God-made-Man.

PSALM 126

Once more will he fill your mouth with laughter,/ and your lips with rejoicing. (Jb 8:21)

Christ sends his disciples out to sow the seed of the Gospel in a world still governed by sin, pain, exile, and death. When the burden seems too great to bear, let us put our hope in his promise that joy awaits those who follow the road faithfully to the end and bring home the harvest of life.

When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,

it seemed like a dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter,

on our lips there were songs.

The heathens themselves said: “What marvels

the Lord worked for them!”

What marvels the Lord worked for us!

Indeed we were glad.

Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage

as streams in dry land.

Those who are sowing in tears

will sing when they reap.

They go out, they go out, full of tears,

carrying seed for the sowing:

they come back, they come back, full of song,

carrying their sheaves.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Baruch 4:22-23)

I have trusted in the Eternal God for your welfare,/ and joy has come to me from the Holy One/ Because of the mercy that will swiftly reach you/ from your eternal savior./ With mourning and lament I sent you forth,/ but God will give you back to me/ with enduring gladness and joy.

My word shall not return to me void/

but shall do my will,/ achieving the end

for which I sent it. (cf. Is 55:11)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I will rejoice in Jerusalem/ and exult in my people./ No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there,/ or the sound of crying. (Is 65:19)

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray especially for those who have grown discouraged in bearing the heat and burden of the day:

R/Deliver your people, O Lord, from bondage.

For all those whose faith has led them into places of exile and sorrow:

– be their deliverance and their joy. R/

For all those who labor in hopelessness:

– be their hope and their courage. R/

For all those who have abandoned pastoral ministry in discouragement:

– be their reconciliation and guide. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the Lord of peace himself give us peace at all times and in every way. Amen. (cf. 2 Thes 3:16)

Prayer to protect priests from the devil’s snares

0

The devil hates priests and will do everything in his power to tempt them and bring them down.

Priests are constantly under spiritual attack. Their ministry serving the People of God is something the devil hates, and he lays out every conceivable trap to trip them up, luring them into the darkness. If a priest is not supported by his own prayer life, or the prayers of his flock, he will fall from grace, greatly damaging the faith of many people.

Here is a prayer by St. Faustina that intercedes on their behalf, asking God to protect priests from the snares of the devil.

O my Jesus, I beg Thee on behalf of the whole Church:
Grant it love and the light of Your Spirit,
and give power to the words of priests
so that hardened hearts might be brought to repentance
and return to You, O Lord.

Lord, give us holy priests;
You yourself maintain them in holiness.
O Divine and Great High Priest,
may the power of Your mercy accompany them everywhere
and protect them from the devil’s traps and snares
which are continually being set for the souls of priests.

May the power of Your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught
all that might tarnish the sanctity of priests,
for You can do all things.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Edward the Confessor (TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13)

King of England. (1003-1066)

His life

+ Edward was the son of King Ethelred II and Queen Emma. Following his father’s fall from power, Edward and his brother, Alfred, were to be killed, but were sent instead to Sweden and, later, taken in by the King of Hungary, who oversaw their education.

+ In 1035, Edward and Alfred attempted to regain the crown of England, but Alfred was killed and Edward turned back. Edward returned to England in 1042 and was made king by acclaim, enthroned on April 3.

+ He gained a reputation as being a worthy and righteous ruler. He protected the kingdom from invaders and was known for his generosity and piety, although his reign also saw the conquest of Scotland and the oppression of those who fought for Scottish independence.

+ A complicated leader and man of his time, he was nevertheless loved by the people and worked to secure the rights of the Church. He built many churches and monasteries, including Westminster Abbey.

+ Saint Edward “the Confessor” died on January 5, 1066, and his death helped set the scene for the Norman Conquest of England later that year. Canonized in 1161, his remains were enshrined in Westminster Abbey in 1269. His memory is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion.

For prayer and reflection

“You have been told, O man, what is good,

and what the Lord requires of you:

Only to do the right and to love goodness,

and to walk humbly with your God.”—Micah 6:8

Prayer

O God, you crowned Blessed King Edward,

your Confessor, with the glory of eternity;

grant us, we beseech you, so to venerate him on earth, t

hat we may be able to reign with him in heaven.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13)

Prayer for the Morning

With God is wisdom: come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

The works of the Lord are created in wisdom;

We view the earth’s wonders

and call him to mind:

We hear what he says in the world we discover

And God shows his glory in all that we find.

The sun every morning lights up his creation,

The moon marks the rhythm

of months in their turn;

The glittering stars are arrayed in his honor

Adorning the years as they ceaselessly burn.

The song is unfinished; how shall we complete it,

And where find the skill

to perfect all God’s praise?

At work in all places, he cares for all peoples—

How great is the Lord to the end of all days!

Psalm 104:1a, 19-24, 33-34, 35b

With him are wisdom and might;/ his are counsel and understanding. (Jb 12:13)

In the Scriptures, wisdom puts all of life in right order. Here the Psalmist celebrates the wisdom with which God has ordered time so that day and night, months and seasons all serve the purpose of life. Time reaches its intended culmination in the gift of everlasting life bestowed through Jesus Christ.

Bless the Lord, my soul!

Lord God, how great you are!

You made the moon to mark the months;

the sun knows the time for its setting.

When you spread the darkness it is night

and all the beasts of the forest creep forth.

The young lions roar for their prey

and ask their food from God.

At the rising of the sun they steal away

and go to rest in their dens.

Man goes forth to his work,

to labor till evening falls.

How many are your works, O Lord!

In wisdom you have made them all.

The earth is full of your riches.

I will sing to the Lord all my life,

make music to my God while I live.

May my thoughts be pleasing to him.

I find my joy in the Lord.

Bless the Lord, my soul.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Job 12:7-10)

Now ask the beasts to teach you,/ and the birds of the air to tell you;/ Or the reptiles on earth to instruct you,/ and the fish of the sea to inform you./ Which of all these does not know/ that the hand of God has done this?/ In his hand is the soul of every living thing,/ and the life breath of all mankind.

The Lord by wisdom founded the earth,/

established the heavens by understanding.

(Prv 3:19)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

All times and all seasons are in God’s hand; all times and all seasons are fulfilled in Christ. Let us pray:

R/You are our life and our salvation!

Yours is the night and yours the day:

– enlighten us with your wisdom at every hour of our lives. R/

Lord God of time and timelessness, you order all things according to your wise designs. Grant us discerning hearts, that we may know and love and serve your plan, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, OCTOBER 12)

Prayer for the Evening

Christ is our light and guide:

come, let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

To do your will is my desire,

To live in you, Lord, is my life,

To spread your love through all the earth,

To find in you the joy of life.

All of my days, I sing your praise.

Through all my nights, you are my light.

You will shine forth through all my years,

And joyously will bring me home.

PSALM 119:1-8

If they obey and serve him,/ they spend their days in prosperity,/ their years in happiness. (Jb 36:11)

Obedience to God’s law seems an unlikely road to happiness. Indeed, at times it seems to bring us conflict, trial, and great loss. What we lose, though, is far less than what we gain if we do the will of the God who wills nothing less for us than the joy of life everlasting in his presence.

They are happy whose life is blameless,

who follow God’s law!

They are happy who do his will,

seeking him with all their hearts,

who never do anything evil

but walk in his ways.

You have laid down your precepts

to be obeyed with care.

May my footsteps be firm

to obey your statutes.

Then I shall not be put to shame

as I heed your commands.

I will thank you with an upright heart

as I learn your decrees.

I will obey your statutes:

do not forsake me.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Peter 1:22-23)

Since you have purified yourselves by obedience to the truth for sincere mutual love, love one another intensely from a [pure] heart. You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and abiding word of God.

All who inhabit the world shall understand/ That nothing is better than the fear of the Lord,/ nothing more salutary than to obey his commandments.

(Sir 23:27)

Prayer to conclude the Rosary

This prayer is said at the end of the Rosary and asks God for help in extending its fruits into our daily lives.

For those who are new to the Rosary, it can be confusing how to end its recitation. While there is no particular rule, many have prayed the following prayer as a fitting conclusion. You will often encounter this prayer in group recitation of the Rosary. It is a prayer that provides a brief summary of the purpose of the Rosary and also asks God for help in putting it into practice. As with all prayer, the more difficult part is interiorizing it and allowing it to transform our daily life.

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to the Servant of God, Blessed Carlo Acutis

Who has given us the ardent testimony

of the young Servant of God, Carlo Acutis,

who made the Eucharist the core of his life

and strength of his daily commitments

so that everybody may love You above all else,

let him soon be counted among

the Blesseds and Saints in Your Church.

Confirm my Faith

nurture my Hope,

strengthen my Charity

in the image of young Carlo,

who, growing in these virtues,

now lives with You.

Grant me the grace I really need….

I trust in you, Father, and your Beloved Son Jesus,

in the Virgin Mary, our Dearest Mother,

and in the intervention of Your Servant, Carlo Acutis.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be… Amen.
