AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Giles (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1)

Patron of Those with Physical Disabilities, Abbot (d. ca. 710)

His life

+ Giles was born in Greece but spent most of his life living as a hermit in France.

+ As his reputation for holiness grew, he attracted a group of disciples and established a monastery at what is now known as Saint-Gilles.

+ After Giles death (sometime around the year 710), his shrine became a popular destination for pilgrims. Many legends grew up around him, making one of the most popular saints in Europe.

+ Saint Giles is honored as the patron saint of those with physical disabilities.

+ Saint Giles is often represented with a deer. According to legend, a nobleman was hunting near Saint Giles hermitage and wounded a stag with an arrow. The wounded animal, sensing Giles’ gentle spirit, approached the hermit for protection. Giles saved the animal and nursed it back to health.

For prayer and reflection

“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone.”—Psalm 62:5

Spiritual bonus

On this day, the Church honors the memory of 12 Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God who were killed on September 1, 1936, as victims of the anti-clerical violence of the Spanish Civil War. These martyrs, including 11 brothers and 1 priest, were beatified in 1992.

Prayer

Grant us, O Lord,

that amid the uncertainties of this world

we may cling with all our heart

to the things of heaven,

for through the Abbot blessed Giles

you have given us a model

of evangelical perfection.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1)

Prayer for the Morning

How great is the Lord our God!

Come, let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,

Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,

Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might,

Thy justice like mountains high soaring above,

Thy clouds which are fountains

of goodness and love.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,

Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;

All laud we would render; O help us to see

’Tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.

PSALM 104:1-5, 33-34, 35b

Clouds hide him;/ he walks upon the vault of the heavens! (cf. Jb 22:14)

One dimension of God is mystery so awesome in its brightness that before it we are blinded. We imagine the God of mystery as dwelling far away, above and beyond the heavens he has made. Yet this same God of mystery dwells very near to us, in our midst, in Jesus Christ.

Bless the Lord, my soul!

Lord God, how great you are,

clothed in majesty and glory,

wrapped in light as in a robe!

You stretch out the heavens like a tent.

Above the rains you build your dwelling.

You make the clouds your chariot,

you walk on the wings of the wind,

you make the winds your messengers

and flashing fire your servants.

You founded the earth on its base,

to stand firm from age to age.

I will sing to the Lord all my life,

make music to my God while I live.

May my thoughts be pleasing to him.

I find my joy in the Lord.

Bless the Lord, my soul.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Amos 9:6)

I have built heaven, my upper chamber,/ and established my vault over the earth;/ I summon the waters of the sea/ and pour them out upon the surface of the earth,/ I, the Lord by name.

He alone has immortality,

who dwells in unapproachable light,

and whom no human being has seen or can see.

(cf. 1 Tm 6:16)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him. (Jn 1:18)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

The Lord our God is concealed in fiery light and revealed in the human face of Jesus Christ. In awestruck love, we dare to say:

R/Blessed are you, O Lord our God!

You created the heavens and the earth and all they contain:

– reveal to all who seek you the beauty of your presence there. R/

You dwell in light inaccessible:

– deepen our hunger to know you, the one true God. R/

You make manifest your redeeming love in Word and Sacrament:

– make of us, your people, a credible sign of your presence and work. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God of light and glory, you are the beauty we seek, the power to whom we entrust ourselves, the love for whom we hunger and thirst. Make yourself known to all people through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, AUGUST 31)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord is our shepherd:

come, let us give thanks!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Loving Shepherd of thy sheep,

Keep us, Lord, in safety keep;

Nothing can thy pow’r withstand,

None can pluck us from thy hand.

Loving Shepherd, thou didst give

Thine own life that we might live;

May we love thee day by day,

Gladly all thy will obey.

Loving Shepherd, ever near,

Teach us still thy voice to hear;

Suffer not our step to stray

From the straight and narrow way.

Where thou leadest we would go,

Walking in thy steps below,

Till before thy Father’s throne

We shall know as we are known.

PSALM 23

Along the ways they shall find pasture,/ on every bare height shall their pastures be./ They shall not hunger or thirst,/ nor shall the scorching wind or the sun strike them;/ For he who pities them leads them/ and guides them beside springs of water. (Is 49:9b-10)

Where the sheep have gone, the shepherd goes to bring them out. No matter how dark the valleys into which we have wandered, Christ is there before us and with us.

The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

Fresh and green are the pastures

where he gives me repose.

Near restful waters he leads me,

to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path;

he is true to his name.

If I should walk in the valley of darkness

no evil would I fear.

You are there with your crook and your staff;

with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me

in the sight of my foes.

My head you have anointed with oil;

my cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me

all the days of my life.

In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell

for ever and ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 15:4-7)

What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

The Son of Man has come to seek

and to save what was lost. (Lk 19:10)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, shepherding them rightly. (cf. Ez 34:16)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

From the depths of every human need, we pray to Christ our Savior:

R/You are there with your crook and your staff;

with these you give us comfort!

In the darkness of our sin: R/

In the depths of our despair: R/

In the shadows of our confusion: R/

In the valley of death: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

In the Lord’s own house may we dwell for ever and ever. Amen. (cf. Ps 23:6)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer for students to Mary, Seat of Wisdom

Offer to God your studies this year through the hands of Mary.

When approaching a new school year, offering it God is not often the first thought that may cross your mind. Yet, God wants to be involved in your studies, whether it’s geography, science, or even math. Here is a short prayer that invokes the intercession of Mary, Seat of Wisdom, to accompany you in your studies and offer them to God.

Under your patronage, dear Mother, and calling on the mystery of your Immaculate Conception, I desire to pursue my studies and my literary labors: I hereby solemnly declare that I am giving myself to these studies chiefly to the following end:
that I may the better contribute to the glory of God and to the promotion of your veneration among all people.

I ask you, therefore, most loving Mother,

who are the Seat of Wisdom, to bless my labors in your loving-kindness.

Moreover I promise with true affection and a willing spirit,

as it is right that I should do, to ascribe all the good that shall come to me therefrom,

wholly to your intercession for me in God’s holy presence.

Amen.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. Raymond Nonnatus (MONDAY, AUGUST 31)

Protector of Babies and Expectant Mothers, Mercedarian Priest (1204-1240)

His life

+ Raymond was born to a noble family in Portella, Spain. His nickname of Nonnatus (“not born”) refers to his birth by Caesarean section, his mother having died as she was giving birth.

+ Although he felt drawn to religious life, his father made him oversee the family’s flocks and holdings. Raymond responded by spending time with the workers (rather than overseeing them) and his father eventually relented and gave the Raymond the permission that he desired.

+ Raymond chose to enter the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (the Mercedarians) and was clothed in the religious habit by the order’s founder, Saint Peter Nolasco. The Mercedarians had a special vocation of ransoming Christians enslaved by Muslims and Raymond embraced this charism. He was eventually imprisoned when he offered to take the place of another Christian.

+ He was tireless in proclaiming the Christian Faith, even while in prison, and to prevent him from this, his captors bored holes in his lips and sealed his mouth with a padlock. After being repeatedly tortured, he was eventually ransomed and was able to return to Spain in 1239.

+ Raymond was created a cardinal but continued to live as a humble religious. He died on August 31, 1240, as he was making his way to Rome on papal business. Canonized in 1657, he is honored as a patron saint of expectant mothers and babies and as a protector in childbirth.

For prayer and reflection

“We are afflicted in every way possible, but we are not crushed; full of doubts, we never despair. We are persecuted but never abandoned; we are struck down but never destroyed. Continually we carry about in our bodies the dying of Jesus, so that in our bodies the life of Jesus may also be revealed.”—2 Corinthians 4:8-10

Spiritual bonus

On August 31, the Church also honors the memory of Saint Joseph Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus. Leaders among the Jewish community in Jerusalem, Joseph provided a tomb and, with Nicodemus (whose encounter with Jesus is recounted in John 3), helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial (see John 19). Later popular legends purport that Joseph brought the Holy Grail to England.

Prayer

Lord,

in Saint Raymond Nonnatus,

faithful worshiper of the Eucharist

and loyal son of the Virgin Mary,

you have given a fearless redeemer of Christian captives to your Church.

Faithful to the light of the Holy Spirit

may we follow the example of his unbounded charity

in sharing the trials of the oppressed.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, AUGUST 31)

Prayer for the Morning

Christ is our glory and our shield:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Glory to you who safe have kept

And have refreshed me while I slept:

Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,

I may of endless light partake.

Lord, I renew my vows to you;

Scatter my foes as morning dew;

Guard my first springs of thought and will,

And with yourself my spirit fill.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH  33:2, 5-6

The One who rules over men in justice/ Is like the morning light at sunrise/ on a cloudless morning,/ making the greensward sparkle after rain. (cf. 2 Sm 23:3-4)

Every morning we arise afresh in Christ our light. Ancient Christian writers warn against “morning demons”: yesterday’s worries and grievances returning to poison the new day.

O Lord, have pity on us, for you we wait.

Be our strength every morning,

our salvation in time of trouble!

The Lord is exalted, enthroned on high;

he fills Zion with right and justice.

That which makes her seasons lasting,

the riches that save her, are wisdom and knowledge;

the fear of the Lord is her treasure.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Ephesians 5:14-15)

Everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says:/ “Awake, O sleeper,/ and arise from the dead,/ and Christ will give you light.”/ Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise.

In the morning you will see the glory of the Lord.

(Ex 16:7)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The favors of the Lord are not exhausted,/ his mercies are not spent;/ They are renewed each morning,/ so great is his faithfulness. (Lam 3:22-23)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Jesus Christ is our light and our life. To him we pray:

R/O Lord of salvation, bless your people!

Grant us fresh hope at the beginning of this day:

– that we may live it for your glory and our neighbor’s good. R/

Relieve us of the burden of old worries and stored grievances:

– that we may pass through the narrow gate that leads to the Kingdom. R/

Protect us from recurring fears:

– that we may serve you in freedom and in peace. R/

Heal all those who labor under the pain of depression, scrupulosity, and anxiety:

– that all may know the joy of your love. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Lord Jesus Christ, you have brought us safely to this new day, as you have promised to bring us safely to dwell with you one day in your Kingdom of light. Defend us against all that would weigh us down and slow our steps, so that we may run with delight in the way of your Gospel, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 30)

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is Lord! Come, let us adore him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

“Take up your cross,” the Savior said,

“If you would my disciple be;

Deny yourself, the world forsake,

And humbly follow after me.”

Take up your cross, let not its weight

Fill your weak spirit with alarm;

His strength shall bear your spirit up,

And brace your heart and nerve your arm.

Take up your cross, nor heed the shame,

Nor let your foolish pride rebel;

Your Lord for you the cross endured,

And saved your soul from death and hell.

Take up your cross and follow Christ,

Nor think till death to lay it down;

For only those who bear the cross

May hope to wear the glorious crown.

CANTICLE (Philippians 2:6-11)

Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Mt 16:25)

Jesus did not hesitate to take up the cross for our sake. Will we refuse to take it up for his sake and for the sake of all those for whom he died? If we do refuse, we may gain temporary benefits, but what will we lose in the long run?

Though he was in the form of God,

Jesus did not deem equality with God

something to be grasped at.

Rather, he emptied himself

and took the form of a slave

being born in the likeness of men.

He was known to be of human estate

and it was thus that he humbled himself,

obediently accepting even death,

death on a cross!

Because of this,

God highly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name

above every other name,

So that at Jesus’ name

every knee must bend

in the heavens, on the earth,

and under the earth,

and every tongue proclaim

to the glory of God the Father:

Jesus Christ is Lord!

Word of God (Mark 10:29-30)

Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.”

Come, follow me. (Mk 10:21)

CANTICLE OF MARY

What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? (Mt 16:26)

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

The cross looks like unbearable suffering, but, seen through the eyes of faith, it is the doorway to eternal glory. We pray:

R/Let us follow you, O Lord.

When we fear the cost of discipleship:

– strengthen us in love. R/

When we cling to goods we cannot bear to abandon:

– grant us freedom of heart. R/

When we hold on to life because we do not trust your love:

– grant us final perseverance and a happy death. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

May the Lord guard our going and coming/ both now and for ever. Amen. (cf. Ps 121:8)

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SUNDAY, AUGUST 30)

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Prayer for the Morning

God gives us the joy of his help:

let us give him thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Living streams of blood and water

From the Source of every good

Strengthen every son and daughter

For a life of servanthood.

Pressing on to final glory,

Every gain is counted loss,

For the true apostle’s story

Is a sharing in Christ’s cross.

Faithfulness and mercy meeting

Make a living sacrifice,

Like the wondrous signs of feeding

In the life of Jesus Christ.

Reigning high above the heavens,

Still he teaches, feeds, and heals;

Still he multiplies and leavens,

And his kingdom he reveals.

PSALM  51:12-21

I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. (Rom 12:1)

There is only one sacrifice God desires of us: that we give to him wholeheartedly all that we are and do. In the Eucharist, we who are Christ’s own body become an integral part of his self-offering to the Father. Let us so live that our offering may be pleasing to him.

A pure heart create for me, O God,

put a steadfast spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from your presence,

nor deprive me of your holy spirit.

Give me again the joy of your help;

with a spirit of fervor sustain me,

that I may teach transgressors your ways

and sinners may return to you.

O rescue me, God, my helper,

and my tongue shall ring out your goodness.

O Lord, open my lips

and my mouth shall declare your praise.

For in sacrifice you take no delight,

burnt offering from me you would refuse,

my sacrifice, a contrite spirit.

A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn.

In your goodness, show favor to Zion:

rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice,

holocausts offered on your altar.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Hebrews 10:8-10)

First he says, “Sacrifices and offerings, holocausts and sin offerings, you neither desired nor delighted in.” These are offered according to the law. Then he says, “Behold, I come to do your will.” He takes away the first to establish the second. By this “will,” we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Through him [then] let us continually offer God

a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips

that confess his name.

(Heb 13:15)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works. (Heb 10:24)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Jesus Christ gives his life to us; let us pray for the grace to give our lives to him without reservation:

R/Into your hands we commend our spirit.

In time of prosperity and peace: R/

In time of turmoil and trouble: R/

In life and in death: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God our Father, you give us life through the sacrifice of your Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Accept our lives as we offer them to you in him. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY, AUGUST 29)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Christ suffered for us:

let us give him thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

My God, I love you; not because

I hope for heav’n thereby,

Nor yet because who love you not

May eternally die.

You, O my Jesus, you did me

Upon the cross embrace;

For me you bore the nails and spear,

And manifold disgrace.

And griefs and torments numberless,

And sweat of agony;

E’en death itself; and all for man

Who was your enemy.

Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ

Should I not love you well?

Not for the hope of winning heaven,

Nor of escaping hell.

Not with the hope of gaining aught,

Nor seeking a reward,

But as yourself have lovèd me,

O everlasting Lord!

E’en so I love you, and will love,

And in your praise will sing,

Solely because you are my God,

And my eternal King.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 52:13-15; 53:2b-3a, 5

Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Lk 9:23)

We make the sign of the cross daily because we live the sign of the cross daily. Jesus’ death on the cross was the summary of a daily life lived by the great demands of obedient love met through all the small acts of choosing other over self that prepare for that ultimate sacrifice.

See, my servant shall prosper,

he shall be raised high and greatly exalted.

Even as many were amazed at him—

so marred was his look beyond that of man,

and his appearance beyond that of mortals—

So shall he startle many nations,

because of him kings shall stand speechless;

For those who have not been told shall see,

those who have not heard shall ponder it.

There was in him no stately bearing to make us look

at him,

nor appearance that would attract us to him.

He was spurned and avoided by men,

a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity,

But he was pierced for our offenses,

crushed for our sins,

Upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole,

by his stripes we were healed.

Word of God (Matthew 5:38-42)

You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on [your] right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.

Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.

(Mt 7:12)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Encourage yourselves daily while it is still “today,” so that none of you may grow hardened by the deceit of sin. (Heb 3:13)

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
