NOVENA TO OUR LORD OF TRANSFIGURATION

(Each day of the Novena includes the 8 numbers in the first part, plus the respective day in the second part: day 1 to 9.)

I. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

O Saving Victim opening wide the gate of heaven to all below.

Our foes press on from every side;

Thine aid supply,

Thy strength bestow.

To Thy great name be endless praise Immortal Godhead,

One in Three;

Oh, grant us endless length of days,

In our true native land with Thee.

Amen.

II. Invocation of the Holy Spirit (or Come Holy Spirit song)

Come Holy Spirit,

fill the hearts of your faithful

and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

Send forth Your Spirit

and they shall be created.

And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,

did instruct the hearts of the faithful,

grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise

and ever enjoy His consolations,

Through Christ Our Lord,

Amen.

III. Words of Wisdom / Reflection / Homiletics Services:

Here you have a choice of one of the above…

IV. Prayer

Father of mercies,

You glorified Your heavenly Son

and revealed Yourself in the bright cloud,

grant that we may listen in faith to have a love for the word of Christ.

Amen.

V. Profession of Faith

I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,

His only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit;

born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified,

died and was buried.

He descended to the dead,

on the third day He rose again.

He ascended into heaven

seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From thence, He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

VI. Concluding prayer

God, our Father,

in the transfigured glory of Christ Your Son,

You strengthen our faith by confirming the witness of Your prophets

and by showing to us the splendor of your beloved Son,

help us to become heirs to the eternal life with Him,

who lives and reigns with You

and the Holy Spirit,

one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

VII. Benediction

Tantum Ergo Sacramentum

Down in adoration falling,

Lo! The Sacred Host we hail.

Lo! o’er ancient forms departing,

Newer rites of Grace prevail:

Faith for all defects supplying,

Where the feeble senses fail.

To The Everlasting Father

And The Son Who reigns on high,

With The Spirit blessed proceeding Forth,

from Each eternally,

Be salvation, honor, blessing,

Might and endless majesty.

Amen.

VIII. To be followed by the Holy Mass.

++++++++++

First Day

Recommended theme for the day: Today is a Joyful Day.

One day Jesus left Nazareth, His hometown,

and lived in Capernaum.

During that time it was a big city,

not distant from Nazareth.

The decision entailed a gesture of farewell to His mother and his town mates.

Everyone making a decision must say goodbye

and give up something.

A vocation of service always signifies some form of sacrifices.

It is the price of the Kingdom of God.

Mary, our mother,

like her Son was growing in her faith,

her understanding of Jesus’ vocation

and her acceptance of the mission God destined for her Son.

For her, this process means uncertainties,

sufferings, fears and anxieties

just as for many mothers who share with their son’s commitment

to fight for injustice on the risks of their lives.

Second Day

Recommended theme for the day: My Own Transfiguration.

Sometimes during the intense moments of our lives,

we ask ourselves,

in a very special way,

“what we ought to do… what our vocation and responsibility is…”

These are moments when we are touched by the pain of injustice around us,

and with our strength,

we share something in the hope that the things may change.

This is the time when we experience the presence of God

who leads us toward the future full of hope.

This is the moment when God speaks to us

and we become so enlightened as to understand the meaning.

This is how Jesus felt when He was transfigured in the Mountain of Tabor.

Prayer

God You have scattered the darkness with Your light

and have poured Your light into our hearts

so that we might look upon the radiant face of Jesus Christ.

Nourish in us the desires to contemplate Your beloved Son.

Amen.

Third Day

Recommended theme for the day: Way of Witnessing to the Resurrection.

The Transfiguration was necessary to help the apostles increase their faith

and recognize the divinity of Jesus,

His union with the Father and the Spirit

as well as with the prophets of the Old Testament.

Maybe there is another kind of transfiguration that is needed for us so that,

like the apostles, when the vision was over,

we may be able to “look up and see no none, but only Jesus.”

The transfiguration to which we refer is the indwelling

of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the Word,

in our neighbor as well as in us.

The kind of transfiguration will enable us to see the common things of earth,

sky and sea with a new wonder and fresh joy.

It will also enable us to see the presence of Jesus

within ourselves and in the people who cross our path,

even if they drive us crazy.

We may think that such an attitude is too difficult to acquire

but it is something that we can continuously ask for and desire.

Prayer

O God, according to Your plan,

You have called us to holiness by Your grace

which You have revealed in Jesus Christ,

through Your Gospel show us the way

so we could share in Your mission of glorious splendor of unending life.

Amen.

Fourth Day

Recommended theme for the day: Experiencing God’s Presence in our Lives – The Joy of Having Christ.

In the transfiguration episode,

we can see just how much Peter lived his calling with enthusiasm

and with a sense of responsibility.

“Master, it is wonderful for us to be here,

so let us make three tents, one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

Here we see Peter in all his generosity.

At this moment he feels at the height of his power and ability.

He is growing in awareness of his responsibility,

the weight he carries on his shoulders.

Prayer

Loving Father, You have so loved us that we have been called to be sons of God,

when Christ comes grant us that we may be like him.

Amen.

Fifth Day

Recommended theme for the day: Transfiguration and Agony.

The transfiguration anticipates the paschal mystery

which begins with the cross.

Jesus can attain His permanent glory in His resurrection.

But first He must die on the cross.

Transfiguration appears as a preparation

and strengthening for the disciples to face the coming passion and death of Jesus,

when His glory seems most unseen.

It was given to the disciples to prepare them for the tragedy of the cross.

Prayer

O Christ, before Your passion and death

You revealed the resurrection to Your disciple on Mount Tabor;

we pray for Your church which labors amid the cares and anxieties of this world,

that in its trials it may always be transfigured by the joy of Your victory.

Amen.

Sixth Day

Recommended theme for the day: Our Mission as Disciples of Jesus.

The value of the vision

and the accompanying glory is its gift of equipping us

for service and endurance.

No one can stay on the mountaintop of Tabor forever,

for there are responsibilities in the valley.

Christ fulfilled His life’s work not in the glory but in the valley,

and it was there He was truly and completely the Messiah.

Prayer

O Christ, You took Peter, James and John

and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

We pray for our Pope and bishops

that they may inspire in Your people

the hope of being transfigured at the last day.

Amen.

Seventh Day

Recommended theme for the day: Transfiguration and Resurrection.

Without the Risen Christ,

Transfiguration has no meaning.

It would appear to be just futile show without a happy ending.

But the Resurrection confirms the glory that was shown during the transfiguration

and which rightly belongs to Jesus.

The glory will be manifested eventually in His second coming for the last judgment.

Prayer

O Christ, You gave light to the world when the glory of the Creator arose over You.

We pray for the men and women of good will that they walk in your light.

Amen.

Eighth Day

Recommended theme for the day: Revelation of Jesus to the Three.

The Transfiguration of the Lord is one shining moment in the life of the apostles

that prepares them for the trials ahead.

Peter, James and John experience the glory in the mountain of Transfiguration.

This is a foretaste of the glory that will be theirs in the Father’s kingdom,

and it will let them see them through the “terrible” days

when Jesus undergoes His passion and death,

and when they themselves are persecuted in His name.

Prayer

O Christ, upon the mountaintop You let the light of Your face shine over Moses and Elijah.

We ask Your blessing upon Your people

who call on Your Name,

who want to belong to the kingdom of light and life.

Amen.

Ninth Day

Recommended theme for the day: Transfiguration and the Blessed Trinity.

The event of the transfiguration marks a decisive moment in the ministry of Jesus.

A revelatory event which prefigures the glory of the Resurrection,

it was given to the disciples to prepare them for the tragedy of the Cross.

The resurrection of Jesus is the epiphany of the Trinity.

The Father raises Jesus from the dead

and the first gift of the glorification is the sending of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

O Christ, You will reform our lowly body and make it like Your glorious one,

we pray for our brothers and sisters

who have died that they may share Your glory forever.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5)

Prayer for the Evening

Come, let us seek the Lord while he may be found,/

and call him while he is near! (cf. Is 55:6)

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Receive, O Lord, in heaven above

Our prayers and supplications pure;

Give us a heart all full of love

And steady courage to endure.

Thy holy name our mouths confess,

Our tongues are harps to praise thy grace;

Forgive our sins and wickedness,

Who in this vigil seek thy face.

Let not our song become a sigh,

A wail of anguish and despair;

In loving-kindness, Lord most high,

Receive tonight our evening prayer.

O raise us in that day, that we

May sing, where all thy saints adore,

Praise to thy Father, and to thee,

And to thy Spirit, evermore.

PSALM  27:1, 4-5, 6b-9a, 11a, 13-14

Jesus was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. (cf. Mt 17:2)

For the Psalmist, God’s “face” was his mysterious presence in the luminous cloud that led the people through the desert and filled the meeting tent, the forerunner of the Temple. Jesus Christ is for us God’s human face, the visible sign of his presence and of his faithful, protective love.

The Lord is my light and my help;

whom shall I fear?

The Lord is the stronghold of my life;

before whom shall I shrink?

There is one thing I ask of the Lord,

for this I long,

to live in the house of the Lord,

all the days of my life,

to savor the sweetness of the Lord,

to behold his temple.

For there he keeps me safe in his tent

in the day of evil.

He hides me in the shelter of his tent,

on a rock he sets me safe,

and I shall offer within his tent

a sacrifice of joy.

I will sing and make music for the Lord.

O Lord, hear my voice when I call;

have mercy and answer.

Of you my heart has spoken:

“Seek his face.”

It is your face, O Lord, that I seek;

hide not your face.

Instruct me, Lord, in your way;

on an even path lead me.

I am sure I shall see the Lord’s goodness

in the land of the living.

Hope in him, hold firm and take heart.

Hope in the Lord!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (2 Corinthians 3:18; 4:6)

All of us, gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit.

For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ.

We seek your face, O Lord!

CANTICLE OF MARY

Now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. (Eph 5:8-9)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,
illos tuos misericordes oculos
ad nos converte.
Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer to St. Thomas Aquinas before using the internet

Infinite Creator,

Who, from the treasures of Your wisdom,

have established three hierarchies of angels,

have arrayed them in marvelous order

above the highest heavens,

and have marshaled the regions

of the universe with such artful skill,

You are proclaimed

the true font of light and wisdom,

pour forth a ray of Your brightness

into the darkened places of my mind;

disperse from my soul

the twofold darkness

into which I was born:

sin and ignorance.

You make eloquent the tongues of infants.

refine my speech

and pour forth upon my lips

The goodness of Your blessing.

Grant to me

keenness of mind,

capacity to remember,

skill in learning,

subtlety to interpret,

and eloquence in speech.

May You

guide the beginning of my work,

direct its progress,

and bring it to completion.

You Who are true God and true Man,

who live and reign, world without end.

Amen.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Commemoration of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major ( WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5)

The first Roman church dedicated to the Mother of God

The meaning of the celebration

+ According to legend, the Blessed Virgin Mary designated the place in Rome where a church was to be built in her honor by a miraculous fall of snow on August 4 and 5, 352.

+ The basilica was built and dedicated to the Mother of God was completed during the pontificate of Pope Sixtus III in the middle of the fifth century. This Church came to be known as Saint Mary “Major” and it is the oldest church in the West dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is one of the four “patriarchal basilicas” of the city of Rome.

+ Originally this feast was a local celebration, limited the city of Rome, but it was extended to the Universal Church in 1586.

+ Although scholars and historians agree that the story of “Our Lady of the Snows” is a pious legend, the devotion has endured for a millennium. As a testament to this, The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate sponsor a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois. The shrine has hosted millions of visitors over the decades and is the largest outdoor shrine in the United States.

For prayer and reflection

“O Theotokos, most holy Lady,

you protect us with your precious veil

and so preserve all Christians from evil.”—“Hymn of Light” from Matins of the Orthodox Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God

Spiritual bonus

On this day we also remember a group of ten Augustinian priests who were martyred on August 5, 1936, during the anti-Catholic violence of the Spanish Civil War. Honored as the “Martyrs of Fuente la Higuera,” they were beatified in 2007.

Prayer

Lord,

pardon the sins of your people.

May the prayers of the Mary, the Mother of your Son,

help to save us,

for by ourselves we cannot please you.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5)

The Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major

Prayer for the Morning

Let us enter God’s presence rejoicing!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Today your gate stands open,

And all who enter in

Shall find a Father’s welcome

And pardon for their sin.

The past shall be forgotten,

A present joy be given,

A future home be promised,

A glorious crown in heaven.

O all-embracing Mercy,

O ever-open Door,

What would I do without you

Who led the way before?

When joy seems all too distant,

And all too near, despair,

I know one gate is open,

One ear will hear my prayer.

PSALM 100

Jesus said: “I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” (cf. Jn 10:9)

The gate to the Lord’s sheepfold is narrow and cut in the shape of a cross. Yet Christ leads the flock safely through to the place of pasture he has prepared for us.

Cry out with joy to the Lord, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with gladness.

Come before him, singing for joy.

Know that he, the Lord, is God.

He made us, we belong to him,

we are his people, the sheep of his flock.

Go within his gates, giving thanks.

Enter his courts with songs of praise.

Give thanks to him and bless his name.

Indeed, how good is the Lord,

eternal his merciful love.

He is faithful from age to age.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Matthew 7:13-14)

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.

Jesus, lead the way!

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Behold, I have left an open door before you, which no one can close. (Rv 3:8)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Let us stand before Christ, our gateway to eternal life, and knock with confidence in prayer:

R/Eternal is your merciful love!

Your cross is the gate to the heavenly city:

– give us the courage to follow you through it today. R/

You have gone before us to prepare a place for us:

– come back to travel with us on this day’s journey. R/

You are the cause of our joy:

– free us from all those burdens that stifle our gladness in you. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord, you have told us to knock and the door would be opened to us. You yourself are the doorway into everlasting joy. Open your way before us as we set out on this day’s journey and guide us to our journey’s end, that, when evening comes, we may enter the courts of your presence rejoicing, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, AUGUST 4)

Prayer for the Evening

Come, let us give thanks to the Lord:

for his love endures for ever!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

On blessed Jean-Marie we call,

The holy priesthood’s ornament,

Our need to God that he present,

With honor on his festival.

The favored son of Providence,

He loved the poor, bestowing aid;

So too the orphaned: thus he paid,

Such as he could, a recompense.

By counsel prudent, ardent prayer,

By penance wrought, inspiring awe,

He, like the Son of man, would draw

All to him, and from sin unsnare.

PSALM 107:1-9

The Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost. (Lk 19:10)

The Lord seeks out the lost and gathers them into the safe dwelling place of his Kingdom through the zealous work of his holy servants, like Saint John Vianney.

“O give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.”

Let them say this, the Lord’s redeemed,

whom he redeemed from the hand of the foe

and gathered from far-off lands,

from east and west, north and south.

Some wandered in the desert, in the wilderness,

finding no way to a city they could dwell in.

Hungry they were and thirsty;

their soul was fainting within them.

Then they cried to the Lord in their need

and he rescued them from their distress

and he led them along the right way,

to reach a city they could dwell in.

Let them thank the Lord for his love,

for the wonders he does for men.

For he satisfies the thirsty soul;

he fills the hungry with good things.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Peter 5:1-4)

I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed. Tend the flock of God in your midst, [overseeing] not by constraint but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful profit but eagerly. Do not lord it over those assigned to you, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

(Mk 10:45)

CANTICLE OF MARY

I will rescue my people from the land of the rising sun, and from the land of the setting sun. (Zec 8:7)

The Good Shepherd and all his faithful servants bear the wounds of those who have sought the lost through thicket and thorn. With confidence, let us pray:

R/Lead your people home!

For those lost in the darkness of disbelief, confusion, and sin: R/

For those who have abandoned the sacraments: R/

For those who are hungry and thirsty: R/

For those who feel lost and alone: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Christ humbled himself for our sakes. May we follow his example and share in his Resurrection. Amen.

Prayer to express your love of God by St. John Vianney

This prayer reflects a soul on fire with God’s love.

St. John Vianney was a humble parish priest from France, who would spend hours and hours in the confessional each day. All of his actions were directed at the salvation of souls and motivated by his deep love of God.Below is a prayer he wrote that expresses that love. It is a prayer that we can make our own, even if our heart is not at that exact level of love.

Vianney’s love of God should inspire us to think about our own lives and whether we desire to love with with the same passion that he had.

I love you, O my God, and my only desire is to love you until the last breath of my life. I love you, O my infinitely lovable God, and I would rather die loving you, than live without loving you. I love you, Lord, and the only grace I ask is to love you eternally. My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love you, I want my heart to repeat it to you as often as I draw breath.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: St. John Vianney (TUESDAY, AUGUST 4)

Patron Saint of Priests. Priest (1786-1859)

His life

+ Born near Lyons, France, John received little formal education because of the turbulence of the French Revolution. He faced many challenges while studying for the priesthood and only barely met the requirements for ordination.

+ Ordained a priest in 1815, he was assigned as curé of the village of Ars. After arriving at the parish, he began to restore the parish church and set out on an intensive pastoral program of preaching, teaching, and visit the sick.

+ A beloved confessor, John Vianney was also known as a worker of miracles. He attributed the conversion of the parish and the miracles to the intercession of Saint Philomena, to whom he had a great devotion.

+ Saint John Vianney died in 1859 and was canonized in 1925. He is honored as the patron of priests.

For prayer and reflection

“All our religion is but a false religion, and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God, if we have not that universal charity for everyone – for the good, and for the bad, for the poor and for the rich, and for all those who do us harm as much as those who do us good.”—Saint John Vianney

Spiritual bonus

On this day, we also remember the Romanian bishop Blessed Ioan Bãlan. A member of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Rite, he was serving bishop of Lugoj when he was arrested by Communist authorities in 1948. Convicted for his fidelity to the outlawed Church, he was housed in monasteries, before being sent to Sighet Prison in Bucharest where he died in 1959. Because of his imprisonment and suffering, he is honored as a martyr and was beatified on June 2, 2019.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (TUESDAY, AUGUST 4)

Saint John Vianney

Prayer for the Morning

How great is God’s name through all the earth!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Firmly I believe and truly

God is Three, and God is One;

And I next acknowledge duly

Manhood taken by the Son.

And I trust and hope most fully

In that Manhood crucified;

And each thought and deed unruly

Do to death, as he has died.

Simply to his grace and wholly

Light and life and strength belong,

And I love supremely, solely,

Him the holy, him the strong.

CANTICLE  (John 1:1-3ab, 10-12, 14)

Unless you become like little children, you shall not enter the kingdom of God. (cf. Mt 18:3)

Saint John Vianney exemplifies the holy simplicity of those who are not learned in the sense of learning the world honors but who are immensely learned in the ways of God. Theirs is the true childlikeness that dares to praise God by their lives as well as by their words.

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

All things came to be through him,

and without him nothing came to be.

He was in the world,

and the world came to be through him,

but the world did not know him.

He came to what was his own,

but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him

he gave power to become children of God,

to those who believe in his name.

And the Word became flesh

and made his dwelling among us,

and we saw his glory,

the glory as of the Father’s only Son,

full of grace and truth.

Word of God (1 Corinthians 1:26-29)

Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God.

He has looked upon his lowly servant! (cf. Lk 1:48)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth,/ who have observed his law;/ Seek justice, seek humility. (Zep 2:3)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Christ’s love for the Church is mirrored in the life of Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars. Through his intercession, let us pray:

R/Make us true followers, O Lord.

You emptied yourself, that you might fill others with life:

– deepen in all pastors a self-sacrificing love for their people. R/

You came not to be served but to serve:

– strengthen those who do works of service against all temptation to pursue personal gain. R/

You gave your life as a ransom for many:

– grant courage to those who are called to spend their lives in tireless dedication to pastoral ministry

of every kind. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

God of power and of love, you made the humble Curé of Ars powerful in holiness, in prayer, and in self-forgetful service of your people. Through his intercession and example, fill all your people with that love which wins devoted followers for your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
