Prayer for the Evening
May the Lord’s name be blessed for ever!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!
Hymn
The race that long in darkness pined
Have seen a glorious light;
The people dwell in day, who dwelt
In death’s surrounding night.
To us a Child of hope is born,
To us a Son is giv’n;
Him shall the tribes of earth obey,
Him all the hosts of heav’n.
His name shall be the Prince of Peace
For evermore adored,
The Wonderful, the Counselor,
The great and mighty Lord.
His pow’r increasing still shall spread,
His reign no end shall know;
Justice shall guard his throne above,
And peace abound below.
Psalm 72:12-14, 16-19
On that day,/ the mountains shall drip new wine,/ and the hills shall flow with milk. (Jl 4:18)
The messianic promises are never vague. They always hold out the hope that the One who comes will fulfill the real dreams of the human heart for peace, healing, and plenty. What we pray for, we must also work for. Thus do we prepare his way.
He shall save the poor when they cry
and the needy who are helpless.
He will have pity on the weak
and save the lives of the poor.
From oppression he will rescue their lives,
to him their blood is dear.
May corn be abundant in the land
to the peaks of the mountains.
May its fruit rustle like Lebanon;
may men flourish in the cities
like grass on the earth.
May his name be blessed for ever
and endure like the sun.
Every tribe shall be blessed in him,
all nations bless his name.
Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel,
who alone works wonders,
ever blessed his glorious name.
Let his glory fill the earth.
Amen! Amen!
Glory to the Father….
Word of God. Isaiah 62:10-11
Pass through, pass through the gates,/ prepare the way for the people;/ Build up, build up the highway,/ clear it of stones,/ raise up a standard over the nations./ See, the Lord proclaims/ to the ends of the earth:/ Say to daughter Zion,/ your savior comes!/ Here is his reward with him,/ his recompense before him.
Near is the day, near is the day of the Lord. (Ez 30:3)
Canticle of Mary
Lo, I am sending my messenger/ to prepare the way before me;/ And suddenly there will come to the temple/ the Lord whom you seek,/ And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. (Mal 3:1)
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
[he] has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.
Glory to the Father…

Marian Antiphon
O Mary, ever Virgin, rejoice,
you who were worthy to bear Christ,
the Creator of heaven and earth;
for from your womb
you brought forth the Savior of the world, alleluia.
Alma Redemptoris Mater
Alma Redemptoris Mater, quæ pervia cæli
porta manes, et stella maris, succurre cadenti,
surgere qui curat, populo: tu quæ genuisti,
natura mirante, tuum sanctum Genitorem,
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore
sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.
Loving mother of the Redeemer
Loving mother of the Redeemer,
gate of heaven, star of the sea,
assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.
To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,
yet remained a virgin after as before.
You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,
have pity on us, poor sinners.
