PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (SATURDAY, AUGUST 22)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Let us give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

for his kindness endures for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

By all your saints still striving,

For all your saints at rest,

Your holy Name, O Jesus,

For evermore be blessed.

You rose, our King victorious,

That they might wear the crown

And ever shine in splendor

Reflected from your throne.

We praise you, Lord, for Peter,

So eager and so bold:

Thrice falling yet repentant,

Thrice charged to feed your fold.

Lord, make your pastors faithful

To guard your flock from harm

And hold them when they waver

With your almighty arm.

PSALM 118:1, 5-7, 19-29

I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. (Mt 16:19)

With joyful trust, let us follow Saint Peter through the narrow gate of selfless love that leads to life in the Kingdom of God.

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good,

for his love endures for ever.

I called to the Lord in my distress;

he answered and freed me.

The Lord is at my side; I do not fear.

What can man do against me?

The Lord is at my side as my helper:

I shall look down on my foes.

Open to me the gates of holiness:

I will enter and give thanks.

This is the Lord’s own gate

where the just may enter.

I will thank you for you have answered

and you are my savior.

The stone which the builders rejected

has become the corner stone.

This is the work of the Lord,

a marvel in our eyes.

This day was made by the Lord;

we rejoice and are glad.

O Lord, grant us salvation;

O Lord, grant success.

Blessed in the name of the Lord

is he who comes.

We bless you from the house of the Lord;

the Lord God is our light.

Go forward in procession with branches

even to the altar.

You are my God, I thank you.

My God, I praise you.

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 22:21b-22)

He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,/ and to the house of Judah./ I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder;/ when he opens, no one shall shut,/ when he shuts, no one shall open.

Open to us the gates of holiness!

(cf. Ps 118:19)

CANTICLE OF MARY

You are the shepherd of Christ’s flock and the prince of the apostles; to you Christ has entrusted the keys of the kingdom of heaven. (Liturgy of the Hours)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

We pray with confidence to the One who called Saint Peter to be the rock on which the Church is built:

R/Be with your people, Lord.

Beside the sea, you called Simon Peter, the fisherman, to become a fisher of men:

– send new messengers so that many may hear your Word. R/

On the lake, you commanded the wind to be still so that the disciples’ boat would not founder:

– keep your Church amid all storms and strengthen those who guide it, especially our Holy Father.

R/

After your Resurrection, you gathered the disciples around Peter:

– gather your people into one flock around one shepherd. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

For yours are the kingdom, the power, and the glory, now and for ever! Amen.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer to imitate the virtues of Mary, Queen of Heaven

The following prayer looks to Mary’s role as Queen for inspiration on our earthly journey toward Heaven.

For various biblical reasons, Mary is regarded as the “Queen Mother” and the Church often refers to her as the “Queen of Heaven and Earth.”

Read more:

Why do Catholics call the Virgin Mary a Queen?

Her queenship remains an important part of Christian devotion, and in a particular way encourages us on the path of virtue. It reminds us of the goal of Heaven. and encourages us to invoke the Queen of Heaven for aid along that journey.

Here is a brief prayer asking for help from God, looking to Mary for guidance and strength.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you;”: grant us, we ask you, so to copy in our lives the holy virtues of your blessed Mother, Queen of Heaven, that, through her glorious intercession with you, we may attain the place prepared for us in your kingdom from the foundation of the world.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,

our life, our sweetness and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears

Turn then, most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb,

Jesus.

O clement, O loving,

O sweet Virgin Mary.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… The Memorial of the Queenship of Mary (SATURDAY, AUGUST 22)

The Octave Day of the Assumption

The meaning of the celebration

Pope Pius XII established this feast in 1954. But Mary’s queenship has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, Gabriel announced that Mary’s Son would receive the throne of David and rule forever. At the Visitation, Elizabeth calls Mary “mother of my Lord.” As in all the mysteries of Mary’s life, she is closely associated with Jesus: Her queenship is a share in Jesus’ kingship. We can also recall that in the Old Testament the mother of the king has great influence in court.

In the fourth century Saint Ephrem called Mary “Lady” and “Queen.” Later Church fathers and doctors continued to use the title. Hymns of the 11th to 13th centuries address Mary as queen: “Hail, Holy Queen,” “Hail, Queen of Heaven,” “Queen of Heaven.” The Dominican rosary and the Franciscan crown as well as numerous invocations in Mary’s litany celebrate her queenship.

The feast is a logical follow-up to the Assumption, and is now celebrated on the octave day of that feast. In his 1954 encyclical To the Queen of Heaven, Pius XII points out that Mary deserves the title because she is Mother of God, because she is closely associated as the New Eve with Jesus’ redemptive work, because of her preeminent perfection, and because of her intercessory power.

As Saint Paul suggests in Romans 8:28–30, God has predestined human beings from all eternity to share the image of his Son. All the more was Mary predestined to be the mother of Jesus. As Jesus was to be king of all creation, Mary, in dependence on Jesus, was to be queen. All other titles to queenship derive from this eternal intention of God. As Jesus exercised his kingship on earth by serving his Father and his fellow human beings, so did Mary exercise her queenship. As the glorified Jesus remains with us as our king till the end of time (Matthew 28:20), so does Mary, who was assumed into heaven and crowned queen of heaven and earth.

For prayer and reflection

“As Christ is our Lord and King by a special title because He redeemed us, so the Blessed Virgin (is our Lady and Queen) because of the unique way in which she has cooperated toward our redemption by giving of her own substance, by offering Him willingly for us, and by desiring, praying, and bringing about our salvation in a singular way.”—Pope Pius XII

Spiritual bonus

On this day, we also remember Blessed María-de-la-Concepcíon Rodríguez Fernández. A Conceptionist nun, she was martyred on August 22, 1936, during the anti-clerical violence of the Spanish Civil War. She was beatified with other martyrs in 2019.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (SATURDAY, AUGUST 22)

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Prayer for the Morning

In God is our joy: through Mary, our Queen,

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Hail, O Queen of heav’n enthroned!

Hail, by angels mistress owned!

Root of Jesse, Gate of Morn,

Whence the world’s true Light was born.

Glorious Virgin, joy to thee,

Loveliest whom in heav’n they see:

Fairest thou, where all are fair,

Plead with Christ our sins to spare.

PSALM 93

Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever. (2 Sm 7:16)

The Blessed Virgin Mary has been crowned Queen in virtue of the Lord Jesus Christ, her Son, who is the King of the universe. In heaven as on earth, she points the way not to her own glory but to his, with which she has been robed and which she seeks only to reflect.

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed;

the Lord has robed himself with might,

he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved;

your throne has stood firm from of old.

From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The waters have lifted up, O Lord,

the waters have lifted up their voice,

the waters have lifted up their thunder.

Greater than the roar of mighty waters,

more glorious than the surgings of the sea,

the Lord is glorious on high.

Truly your decrees are to be trusted.

Holiness is fitting to your house,

O Lord, until the end of time.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 1:31-33)

Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.

Just as we have borne the image of the earthly man,

we shall also bear the image of the heavenly man.

(cf. 1 Cor 15:49)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

Rejoice, O Mary, key to the Kingdom of Christ. (Akathist to Our Most Holy Lady, Mother of God)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Queen, who leads us in love to her Son, let us pray:

R/Be it done according to your will.

For the Church:

– that we may serve God’s glory by imitating the humble obedience of Mary, the Queen. R/

For all who exercise leadership:

– that they may seek the good of all, after the example of Mary, the Queen. R/

For all who have died:

– that they may enter into your glory through the intercession of Mary, the Queen. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God, by the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary, you have given to the human race the reward of eternal life. Grant, we beseech you, that through the intercession of the mother of the Author of Life, the Church may become the mother of many children who will take their place before your throne to sing your praises for all eternity, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Try this prayer and these petitions to pray for priests

1

This beautiful prayer turns our thoughts to the Lord as the priest is receiving Communion.

As a priest, I am aware of the countless people of God who pray for me—those from within my parish community and followers I have as an author, speaker, and radio personality. In my parish, a group of women called the Seven Sisters commit to praying for me, their pastor, on a specific day each week. Individuals on Twitter, like Kathryn Jean Lopez and Edith (CatolicaEdith), inspire me by their posts.Recently, Lopez tweeted: “If you go to Mass today, thank the priest. We need faithful priests. Pray for his holiness. Pray that he can know and show the Lord every day of his life. Faithful, joyful priests in this culture are miracles, too.  Pray for priests, that Jesus Christ is their everything.”

Edith once tweeted a picture of a prayer a person could pray for a priest as he receives Holy Communion:

O Lord, may Thou find shelter and rest gently within the heart of thy Priest. Make him, O Lord, a priest according to thy Heart: meek, humble, zealous, so that all he does will be for Thine honor and glory. Mold him into a man of prayer and labor, insensible to earthly things, and sensible only to Thy love and to the graces of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

How beautiful — an encouragement to pray for priests and a prayer one could use to do so. Do you pray for priests?  If so, how do you pray? Which priests do you pray for and what do you pray?

You might pray for priests who are close to your heart — the priest who baptized you, who gave you First Communion, who forgives your sins in confession, who witnessed your marriage, your pastor, or any other priest friend. Thank God for them and their vocation.

How do you pray for them? You may wish to include them in your Rosary intentions, or ask priestly saints like St. John Vianney, St. Francis de Sales, or St. John Eudes to pray for them. And maybe you pray for something specific when you remember your priest(s) in prayer. As you pray for the priests in your life, here are a few suggestions.

— For his happiness and that he may be well-rested: Pray that your priest is happy and he finds things that give him life. Pray that he takes his days off and vacation so that he is well-rested.

— That he be blessed with good friends: Pray that your priest has good fraternity and friendships with priests but also with lay people, too.

— That he live a virtuous life and grow in virtue — patience, humility, purity, charity, etc.

— That he will be compassionate in his pastoral work

— That God will give him specific gifts, like offering good counsel in the confessional

— That the Lord keep him faithful and holy and that he will always remain in love with the Lord Jesus and the Church

— For protection from evil, to be guarded against temptation, and for continued conversion of life

— That he will be inspired by the Holy Spirit in his preaching and that his preaching will be effective, touch hearts, and change lives.

— For his spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health and for any healings he needs

— For his intentions: Pray for God’s will to be done in all the circumstances your priest is praying about. And as you remember his intentions, know that so many have asked him to pray for them, so your prayer for his intentions will be joined to theirs!

As I encourage you to pray for the clergy, know that your priests are praying for you too. They remember you in their prayers as they pray the Liturgy of the Hours, the Rosary, the Divine Mercy chaplet, and other devotions. They carry your needs and burdens with them and leave them before the tabernacle.

Thank you for your prayers for holy priests!

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (FRIDAY, AUGUST 21)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us come before the Lord singing for joy!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Love, who drew from Jesus’ side

One Body freed from Adam’s shame,

One Church sent forth to serve and guide,

One faith confirmed by gifts of flame:

When empty words our hopes assail,

Your kingdom come, your truth prevail.

Round Peter’s chair may all unite;

From blinded eyes the veil withdraw;

The minds of rulers set aright

Who bind your Church beneath their law:

Where faith grows dim and hearts are frail,

Your kingdom come, your truth prevail.

PSALM 132:1-5, 8-10, 13-16

I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated. (Acts 20:32)

Saint Pius X worked tirelessly to build God’s house, the Church, into a community of true faith and reverent worship in Jesus Christ. His motto was “to make all things new in Christ.”

O Lord, remember David

and all the many hardships he endured,

the oath he swore to the Lord,

his vow to the Strong One of Jacob.

“I will not enter the house where I live

nor go to the bed where I rest.

I will give no sleep to my eyes,

to my eyelids I will give no slumber

till I find a place for the Lord,

a dwelling for the Strong One of Jacob.”

Go up, Lord, to the place of your rest,

you and the ark of your strength.

Your priests shall be clothed with holiness:

your faithful shall ring out their joy.

For the sake of David your servant

do not reject your anointed.

For the Lord has chosen Zion;

he has desired it for his dwelling:

“This is my resting-place for ever,

here have I chosen to live.

I will greatly bless her produce,

I will fill her poor with bread.

I will clothe her priests with salvation

and her faithful shall ring out their joy.”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 24:7-8)

Among all these I sought a resting place;/ in whose inheritance should I abide?

“Then the Creator of all gave me his command,/ and he who formed me chose the spot for my tent,/ Saying, ‘In Jacob make your dwelling,/ in Israel your inheritance.’”

Where two or three are gathered together in

my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Mt 18:20)

CANTICLE OF MARY

From one new moon to another,/ and from one sabbath to another,/ All mankind shall come to worship/ before me, says the Lord. (Is 66:23)

INTERCESSION

Let us pray to Christ, in whom and through whom we give worship to God:

R/Nourish your people, O Lord.

You dwell in our midst, Lord Jesus:

– draw us into awareness of your presence. R/

You clothe your priests with holiness:

– keep them always in your love. R/

Your faithful ring out their joy:

– give everlasting joy to those who have died. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

You bless your people and make us holy. May we know and love the heavenly gifts we have received. Amen.

AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… Saint of the Day: Pope St. Pius X (FRIDAY, AUGUST 21)

“To Renew All Things in Christ” (1835-1914)

His life

Pope Pius X is perhaps best remembered for his encouragement of the frequent reception of Holy Communion, especially by children.

The second of 10 children in a poor Italian family, Joseph Sarto became Pius X at age 68. He was one of the 20th century’s greatest popes.

Ever mindful of his humble origin, Pope Pius stated, “I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor.” He was embarrassed by some of the pomp of the papal court. “Look how they have dressed me up,” he said in tears to an old friend. To another, “It is a penance to be forced to accept all these practices. They lead me around surrounded by soldiers like Jesus when he was seized in Gethsemani.”

Interested in politics, Pope Pius encouraged Italian Catholics to become more politically involved. One of his first papal acts was to end the supposed right of governments to interfere by veto in papal elections—a practice that reduced the freedom of the 1903 conclave which had elected him.

In 1905, when France renounced its agreement with the Holy See and threatened confiscation of Church property if governmental control of Church affairs were not granted, Pius X courageously rejected the demand.

While he did not author a famous social encyclical as his predecessor had done, he denounced the ill treatment of indigenous peoples on the plantations of Peru, sent a relief commission to Messina after an earthquake, and sheltered refugees at his own expense.

On the 11th anniversary of his election as pope, Europe was plunged into World War I. Pius had foreseen it, but it killed him. “This is the last affliction the Lord will visit on me. I would gladly give my life to save my poor children from this ghastly scourge.” He died a few weeks after the war began, and was canonized in 1954.

His humble background was no obstacle in relating to a personal God and to people whom he loved genuinely. Pius X gained his strength, his gentleness and warmth for people from the source of all gifts, the Spirit of Jesus. In contrast, we often feel embarrassed by our backgrounds. Shame makes us prefer to remain aloof from people whom we perceive as superior. If we are in a superior position, on the other hand, we often ignore simpler people. Yet we, too, have to help “restore all things in Christ,” especially the wounded people of God.

For prayer and reflection

Truly we are passing through disastrous times, when we may well make our own the lamentation of the Prophet: “There is no truth, and there is no mercy, and there is no knowledge of God in the land” (Hosea 4:1). Yet in the midst of this tide of evil, the Virgin Most Merciful rises before our eyes like a rainbow, as the arbiter of peace between God and man.”—Pope Saint Pius X

Prayer

O God, who to safeguard the Catholic faith

and to restore all things in Christ,

filled Pope Saint Pius the Tenth

with heavenly wisdom and apostolic fortitude,

graciously grant

that, following his teaching and example,

we may gain an eternal prize.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (FRIDAY, AUGUST 21)

Saint Pius X

Prayer for the Morning

O sing a new song to the Lord! (Ps 96:1)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

How light the bread of angels

Upon the human tongue!

This precious weight of glory

That binds the Church in one.

The flesh with all its passions

Could never match the bliss

Of mind and heart and mem’ry

Caught up in heaven’s kiss.

Forth from his wounded body,

The water and the blood,

The glad’ning stream of heaven,

Swells to a mighty flood.

It crosses through the ages

And flows into the hearts

Of saints he makes from sinners

With skillful healing arts.

This food, so light, refreshing,

Shall speed our pilgrim way,

Until that happy morning

When dawn turns into day.

Upon the holy mountain,

Within God’s holy hall,

The Father and the Spirit,

And Christ, our all in all.

PSALM 96:7-13

I would feed my people with finest wheat/ and fill them with honey from the rock. (cf. Ps 81:17)

Saint Pius X understood that a life lived in the truth of the faith takes enduring root only in the community of worship. His vision for the Church included a strong emphasis on liturgical renewal. His work to open the Eucharist more widely to the faithful, especially to children, was one of his enduring gifts to the Church.

Give the Lord, you families of peoples,

give the Lord glory and power,

give the Lord the glory of his name.

Bring an offering and enter his courts,

worship the Lord in his temple.

O earth, tremble before him.

Proclaim to the nations: “God is king.”

The world he made firm in its place;

he will judge the peoples in fairness.

Let the heavens rejoice and earth be glad,

let the sea and all within it thunder praise,

let the land and all it bears rejoice,

all the trees of the wood shout for joy

at the presence of the Lord for he comes,

he comes to rule the earth.

With justice he will rule the world,

he will judge the peoples with his truth.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Sirach 45:7, 17)

[God] made him perpetual in his office/ when he bestowed on him the priesthood of his people;/ He established him in honor/ and crowned him with lofty majesty./ He gave to him his laws,/ and authority to prescribe and to judge:/ To teach the precepts to his people,/ and the ritual to the descendants of Israel.

He was filled with the spirit of understanding.

(cf. Sir 39:6)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

He poured forth his words of wisdom/ and in prayer gave thanks to the Lord,/ Who directed his knowledge and his counsel. (cf. Sir 39:6-7)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (THURSDAY, AUGUST 20)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us praise the Lord in all his saints!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

O Jesus, king most wonderful!

O Conqueror renowned!

O source of peace ineffable,

In whom all joys are found:

O Jesus, light of all below,

The fount of life and fire,

Surpassing all the joys we know,

All that we can desire.

You may our tongues for ever bless;

You may we love alone

And ever in our lives express

The image of your own.

PSALM 112:1-9

You have been told, O man, what is good,/ and what the Lord requires of you:/ Only to do the right and to love goodness,/ and to walk humbly with your God. (Mi 6:8)

Saint Bernard wrote eloquently of the growth of love that marks the path of true holiness. Love is a practical virtue: it dwells in God’s presence but works for the good of others. Saint Bernard’s own holiness was rewarded by the rapid expansion of his order: his spiritual sons continue to serve the Church by a life of prayer, penance, and work.

Happy the man who fears the Lord,

who takes delight in all his commands.

His sons will be powerful on earth;

the children of the upright are blessed.

Riches and wealth are in his house;

his justice stands firm for ever.

He is a light in the darkness for the upright:

he is generous, merciful and just.

The good man takes pity and lends,

he conducts his affairs with honor.

The just man will never waver:

he will be remembered for ever.

He has no fear of evil news;

with a firm heart he trusts in the Lord.

With a steadfast heart he will not fear;

he will see the downfall of his foes.

Open-handed, he gives to the poor;

his justice stands firm for ever.

His head will be raised in glory.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)

If I speak in human and angelic tongues, but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

God is love!

(1 Jn 4:8)

CANTICLE OF MARY

Render true judgment, and show kindness and compassion toward each other. (Zec 7:9)

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Antiphon for the Solemnity

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

August 15

Virgin most prudent, where do you go forth,

shining exceedingly as the dawn?

Daughter of Zion, you are all beautiful and gracious,

fair as the moon, bright as the sun.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prepare for communion with this prayer of spiritual hunger

Express to God how your soul thirsts and longs to be united with him in Holy Communion.

Whenever we are in a habit of receiving Holy Communion on a regular basis, it seems that our hunger for God is not as evident. On the other hand, if we are deprived from receiving Holy Communion for an extended amount of time, our hunger grows and we long for the day when we can be reunited with God.In both situations we need to foster within us this spiritual hunger, as it can drive us to love God more passionately and fuel the flames of devotion.

Here is a prayer adapted from the Golden Manual that highlights this hunger and prepares our soul to receive God in Holy Communion with a heart that thirsts for his presence.

As the wearied hart thirsts after the fountains of water, so does my soul thirst after you, my Savior, my Lord, and my God. It ardently longs to drink of those fountains which your love has opened for its comfort and relief. Tired with my own evil ways, I return hungry and thirsty, crying out aloud, Have mercy on me, O Son of God, and permit me to taste of your banquet, that my soul may be refreshed. Oh, that my soul did truly hunger after you, the bread of angels, the food of blessed souls, and that all that is within me might be delighted with the taste of your sweetness! I desire forever to renounce my folly and weakness, and from my heart request that, for the future, my joy, my relief, my treasure, and rest, may be entirely centred in you. May I never desire any thing besides you; and may all things seem contemptible and as nothing without you, O my God.
