AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE… St. Francesco Đo Minh Chieu (THURSDAY, JUNE 25)

Saint of the Day: St. Francesco Đo Minh Chieu

Vietnamese Catechist and Martyr

Martyr (ca. 1797-1838)

His life

+ Phanxicô (Francesco) was a lay catechist who was born in the village of Trung Le, in the Nam Đinh province of Vietnam.

+ He was a dedicated assistant to the Bishop Dominic Henares de Zafra Cubero, a Dominican missionary who had been named bishop of Phunhay in 1803.

+ During the persecution of Vietnamese Christians by the emperor Minh Mang, Francesco and Bishop Henares were arrested and murdered on June 25, 1838.

+ These two holy martyrs were canonized with 109 martyrs from Vietnam in 1988. They are honored with a common liturgical memorial on November 24 as “Saint Andrew Dung-Lac and the Martyrs of Vietnam.”

For prayer and reflection

“May we never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”—Galatians 6:14

Prayer

Almighty and merciful God, who brought your Martyr blessed Francesco to overcome the torments of his passion, grant that we, who celebrate the day of his triumph, may remain invincible under your protection against the snares of the enemy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (THURSDAY, JUNE 25)

Prayer for the Morning

Lift up your hearts!

Let us lift them up to the Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,

Whose trust, ever child-like, no cares can destroy,

Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,

Your bliss in our hearts, Lord,

at the break of the day.

Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,

Whose strong hands were skilled

at the plane and the lathe,

Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,

Your strength in our hearts, Lord,

at the noon of the day.

PSALM  25:1-7

Let the Lord, your God, show us what way we should take and what we should do. (Jer 42:3)
Let us put into God’s hands our heart, our soul, the deep recesses of our being wherein dwell those beliefs and thoughts that govern our actions, so that he may guide us in the ways of the Gospel.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust you, let me not be disappointed;

do not let my enemies triumph.

Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,

but only those who wantonly break faith.

Lord, make me know your ways.

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my savior.

In you I hope all day long

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

Do not remember the sins of my youth.

In your love remember me.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Isaiah 42:16)

I will lead the blind on their journey;/ by paths unknown I will guide them./ I will turn darkness into light before them,/ and make crooked ways straight./ These things I do for them,/ and I will not forsake them.

Let us search and examine our ways/

that we may return to the Lord! (Lam 3:40)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

In all your ways be mindful of him,/ and he will make straight your paths. (Prv 3:6)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O God our Father, you sent your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to be our way, our truth, and our life. At this morning hour, we lift our hearts to you in prayer and ask that you guide us through this day according to your will, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to St. Anthony to find an item that was lost

“Dear St. Anthony, please come around: something is lost, and it cannot be found.”

Losing or misplacing something can be quite frustrating. Especially when you lose an item or object that you urgently need. The good news is that St. Anthony of Padua is here to help.The Portuguese and the Italian claim Saint Anthony as their own, and not without reason on both sidesborn in Lisbon in 1195 under the name Fernando de Bulloes y Taveira de Azevedo, upon entering the Order of Friars Minor (that is, the Franciscan Order) he assumed the name Antonio, in homage to San Antonio Abad. In Padua, the city where he died and is buried, stands the Basilica dedicated to him, popularly known simply under the name of “il santo” –“the saint”– no further info needed.

Saint Anthony is widely known as the “Patron Saint of Lost Things.” It all goes back to a story from his life. A novice stole a book of Psalms he had. When St. Anthony prayed to God for it to be recovered, the novice returned it to him.

A prayer of exorcism taught by Saint Anthony

Throughout the centuries countless people have turned to St. Anthony in their hour of need, and many times their prayers were answered. Invoking his intercession does not always guarantee that the item will be found, but when the person prays to St. Anthony with an honest faith and open heart, God always answers the petition somehow.

Here is a popular prayer to St. Anthony to recover a lost item, as well as a catchy rhyme that is easy to memorize.

St. Anthony, perfect imitator of Jesus, who received from God the special power of restoring lost things, grant that I may find [name the item] which has been lost. At least restore to me peace and tranquility of mind, the loss of which has afflicted me even more than my material loss. To this favor, I ask another of you: that I may always remain in possession of the true good that is God. Let me rather lose all things than lose God, my supreme good. Let me never suffer the loss of my greatest treasure, eternal life with God. Amen

Prayer to Our Lady to keep you from danger

God, who beholds us encompassed on all sides by dangers and miseries,

grant us in your goodness,

that the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God,

your only Son, may defend us from the malignant enemy,

and protect us against all adversity; that she may ever by prompt succor,

deliver us from all necessities of soul and body; and by her powerful hand,

lead us in safety to the kingdom of heaven: Through Jesus Christ your Son, Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24)

The Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist

“A voice that lasted only for a time.”

Prayer for the Evening

Let us sing praise to God as we honor John.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

O prophet John, O man of God,

Your love was pure as desert fire.

Obtain for us pure hearts that we

May sing with voices that inspire.

While still within your mother’s womb

You leapt to greet the hidden Word.

Your mother spoke, alive with joy,

And Mary praised her mighty Lord.

To God the Father offer praise,

To Jesus Christ his only Son,

And in their gracious Spirit sing

Of all that God in love has done.

PSALM 71:15-17, 18b-23

John is the voice, but the Lord in the beginning was the Word. John is a voice for a time, but Christ is the eternal Word from the beginning. (Saint Augustine)
Before John was born, the Angel Gabriel announced the word of his birth. In the womb, the Word inspired him to leap with joy. In the desert solitude, the word of God came to him. And always, always, the Word found John ready to serve.

My lips will tell of your justice

and day by day of your help

though I can never tell it all.

I will declare the Lord’s mighty deeds

proclaiming your justice, yours alone.

O God, you have taught me from my youth

and I proclaim your wonders still.

Let me tell of your power to all ages,

praise your strength and justice to the skies,

tell of you who have worked such wonders.

O God, who is like you?

You have burdened me with bitter troubles

but you will give me back my life.

You will raise me from the depths of the earth;

you will exalt me and console me again.

So I will give you thanks on the lyre

for your faithful love, my God.

To you will I sing with the harp,

to you, the Holy One of Israel.

When I sing to you my lips shall rejoice

and my soul, which you have redeemed.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (1 Peter 1:6-8)

In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy.

My spirit rejoices in God my savior!
(Lk 1:47)

TE DEUM

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am,” I said; “send me!” (Is 6:8)

You are God: we praise you;

You are the Lord: we acclaim you;

You are the eternal Father:

All creation worships you.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,

Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,

your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,

and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,

the eternal Son of the Father.

When you became man to set us free

you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death,

and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.

We believe that you will come, and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,

bought with the price of your own blood,

and bring us with your saints

to glory everlasting.

MARIAN ANTIPHON

Mary is the immaculate lily,

who brought forth Christ the imperishable rose.

O holy Mother of God,

immaculate sheep,

who gave birth to Christ the Lamb,

the Word incarnate from you;

O most holy Virgin,

who have astonished the hosts of angels;

stupendous is the miracle in heaven:

a woman clothed with the sun

carrying in her arms the Light.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

A prayer to the Child Jesus to overcome anger and learn to forgive

This little Child has come into the world to save His people; and not only has He not where to lay His head, but they seek to take His tender life with the cruel sword.

Does He say, “I will not save these men. They seek to shed My Blood, to take the life of Me, who came to be their life.”

“I will not save them!”

No. It is already in His Heart, “Father, forgive them.”

The wilder their hate, the more tender His love.

Dear Child Jesus, I will bear no anger nor hatred in my heart.

I forgive all who have hurt me, or who have sought to do me harm.

Give me grace, for your dear sake, always to forgive, always to pray for those who may injure me or wish me ill.

Dear Mother Mary, it was sorrow, not anger, that filled your heart. You could not but pray for the enemies of your dear Son. Pray that I may have ever a forgiving heart.

Holy Joseph, pray for me.

Most Holy Child Jesus, save your children.

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (TUESDAY, JUNE 23)

Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist

Praise the name of the Lord!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

HYMN

Meter: LM
This hymn can be sung to the tune used for
On Jordan’s Bank

Of woman born shall never be

A greater prophet than was he,

Whose mighty deeds exalt his fame

To greater than a prophet’s name.

But why should mortal accents raise

The hymn of John the Baptist’s praise?

Of whom, or e’er his course was run,

Thus spoke the Father to the Son?

“Behold, my herald, who shall go

Before your face your way to show,

And shine, as with the day-star’s gleam,

Before your own eternal beam.”

PSALM 113

The Lord will be your light for ever,/ and the days of your mourning shall be at an end. (Is 60:20)
John’s parents were elderly and childless, but God gladdened them with a child. The old Israel, patiently awaiting the promised Messiah, seemed barren, but God sent the Prophet John to announce that the long-awaited dawn of the Messiah’s day would soon break upon the world.

Praise, O servants of the Lord,

praise the name of the Lord!

May the name of the Lord be blessed

both now and for evermore!

From the rising of the sun to its setting

praised be the name of the Lord!

High above all nations is the Lord,

above the heavens his glory.

Who is like the Lord, our God,

who has risen on high to his throne

yet stoops from the heights to look down,

to look down upon heaven and earth?

From the dust he lifts up the lowly,

from his misery he raises the poor

to set him in the company of princes,

yes, with the princes of his people.

To the childless wife he gives a home

and gladdens her heart with children.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (John 1:6-9)

A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. (Jn 5:35)

INTERCESSIONS

God, who is ever faithful, chose John the Baptist to announce the coming of Christ. Let us pray with joy:

R/Guide our feet into the way of peace.

John was called from his mother’s womb to prepare the way for your Son:

– open the way into the depths of all hearts. R/

John went into the desert and there your word came to him:

– grant us the wisdom to seek the solitude and silence of prayer. R/

John pointed toward the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ:

– make of your Church a living sign of Christ’s presence in the world. R/

PRAYER FOR THIS EVENING (MONDAY, JUNE 22)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord is our shepherd:

come, let us give thanks!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Loving Shepherd of thy sheep,

Keep us, Lord, in safety keep;

Nothing can thy pow’r withstand,

None can pluck us from thy hand.

Loving Shepherd, thou didst give

Thine own life that we might live;

May we love thee day by day,

Gladly all thy will obey.

Loving Shepherd, ever near,

Teach us still thy voice to hear;

Suffer not our step to stray

From the straight and narrow way.

Where thou leadest we would go,

Walking in thy steps below,

Till before thy Father’s throne

We shall know as we are known.

PSALM 23

Along the ways they shall find pasture,/ on every bare height shall their pastures be./ They shall not hunger or thirst,/ nor shall the scorching wind or the sun strike them;/ For he who pities them leads them/ and guides them beside springs of water. (Is 49:9b-10)

Where the sheep have gone, the shepherd goes to bring them out. No matter how dark the valleys into which we have wandered, Christ is there before us and with us.

The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

Fresh and green are the pastures

where he gives me repose.

Near restful waters he leads me,

to revive my drooping spirit.

He guides me along the right path;

he is true to his name.

If I should walk in the valley of darkness

no evil would I fear.

You are there with your crook and your staff;

with these you give me comfort.

You have prepared a banquet for me

in the sight of my foes.

My head you have anointed with oil;

my cup is overflowing.

Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me

all the days of my life.

In the Lord’s own house shall I dwell

for ever and ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Luke 15:4-7)

What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.” I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

The Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost. (Lk 19:10)

CANTICLE OF MARY

The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, shepherding them rightly. (cf. Ez 34:16)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

A prayer to St. John the Baptist to grow in freedom and detachment

O glorious Saint John the Baptist,

greatest prophet among those born of woman (Luke 7, 28),

although thou wast sanctified in thy mother’s womb and didst lead a most innocent life,

nevertheless it was thy will to retire into the wilderness,

there to devote thyself to the practice of austerity and penance;

obtain for us of thy Lord the grace to be wholly detached,

at least in our hearts, from earthly goods,

and to practice Christian mortification with interior recollection and with the spirit of holy prayer.

Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING for MONDAY, JUNE 22

Saint Paulinus of Nola;

Saints John Fisher and Thomas More

Prayer for the Morning

Christ is our glory and our shield:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

HYMN

Glory to you who safe have kept

And have refreshed me while I slept:

Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,

I may of endless light partake.

Lord, I renew my vows to you;

Scatter my foes as morning dew;

Guard my first springs of thought and will,

And with yourself my spirit fill.

CANTICLE OF ISAIAH 33:2, 5-6

The One who rules over men in justice/ Is like the morning light at sunrise/ on a cloudless morning,/ making the greensward sparkle after rain. (cf. 2 Sm 23:3-4)

Every morning we arise afresh in Christ our light. Ancient Christian writers warn against “morning demons”: yesterday’s worries and grievances returning to poison the new day.

O Lord, have pity on us, for you we wait.

Be our strength every morning,

our salvation in time of trouble!

The Lord is exalted, enthroned on high;

he fills Zion with right and justice.

That which makes her seasons lasting,

the riches that save her, are wisdom and knowledge;

the fear of the Lord is her treasure.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God (Ephesians 5:14-15)

Everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says:/ “Awake, O sleeper,/ and arise from the dead,/ and Christ will give you light.”/ Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise.

In the morning you will see the glory of the LORD.
(Ex 16:7)

CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH

The favors of the Lord are not exhausted,/ his mercies are not spent;/ They are renewed each morning,/ so great is his faithfulness. (Lam 3:22-23)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

INTERCESSIONS

Jesus Christ is our light and our life. To him we pray:

R/O Lord of salvation, bless your people!

Grant us fresh hope at the beginning of this day:

– that we may live it for your glory and our neighbor’s good. R/

Relieve us of the burden of old worries and stored grievances:

Our Father….

Lord Jesus Christ, you have brought us safely to this new day, as you have promised to bring us safely to dwell with you one day in your Kingdom of light. Defend us against all that would weigh us down and slow our steps, so that we may run with delight in the way of your Gospel, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
