Prayer for the Evening (Wednesday, December 1)

Prayer for the Evening

The Lord is our guard and our shade:

in the shadow of his love, let us give thanks

and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Behold! the mountain of the Lord

In latter days shall rise

On mountain tops above the hills,

And draw the wond’ring eyes.

To this the joyful nations round,

All tribes and tongues shall flow;

Up to the hill of God, they’ll say,

And to his house we’ll go.

No strife shall rage, nor hostile feuds

Disturb those peaceful years;

To ploughshares men shall beat their swords,

to pruning-hooks their spears.

Come then, O house of Jacob! come

To worship at his shrine;

And, walking in the light of God,

With holy beauties shine.

Psalm 121

There shall be no harm or ruin on all my holy mountain. (Is 11:9)

Mountains always seem to promise protection. Jerusalem, God’s city, stands upon Mount Zion, its doors open and welcoming, its gates guarded for ever against all suffering and death, the rich wedding feast of the Lamb laid for all God’s people!

I lift up my eyes to the mountains:

from where shall come my help?

My help shall come from the Lord

who made heaven and earth.

May he never allow you to stumble!

Let him sleep not, your guard.

No, he sleeps not nor slumbers,

Israel’s guard.

The Lord is your guard and your shade;

at your right side he stands.

By day the sun shall not smite you

nor the moon in the night.

The Lord will guard you from evil,

he will guard your soul.

The Lord will guard your going and coming

both now and for ever.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Revelation 21:3-4

I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them [as their God]. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, [for] the old order has passed away.”

Come, let us drink our fill of love,/ until morning,

let us feast on love! (Prv 7:18)

Canticle of Mary

Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb! (Order of Mass)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Let us pray to our compassionate Savior, whose suffering on Mount Calvary will wipe away all suffering and death on the eternal mountain of God:

R/Guard us from evil!

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the bread and wine of life:

– deliver us from the shadow of death. R/

Lord Jesus Christ, you wipe away every tear at your heavenly table:

– abide now with those who suffer grief and loss and give them comfort. R/

Lord Jesus Christ, you neither slumber nor sleep:

– watch with those who cannot rest and grant them peace of heart. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

May the Lord bless us from Zion,/ he who made both heaven and earth. Amen. (cf. Ps 134:3)

Marian Antiphon

O Mary, ever Virgin, rejoice,

you who were worthy to bear Christ,

the Creator of heaven and earth;

for from your womb

you brought forth the Savior of the world, alleluia.

sumens illud Ave, peccatorum miserere.

Loving mother of the Redeemer

Loving mother of the Redeemer,

gate of heaven, star of the sea,

assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again.

To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator,

yet remained a virgin after as before.

You who received Gabriel’s joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

Prayer for the Morning (Wednesday, December 1)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord is our shepherd:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Come, Lord, and tarry not;

Bring the long looked-for day;

O why these years of waiting here,

These ages of delay?

Come, for creation groans,

Impatient of your stay,

Worn out with these long years of ill,

These ages of delay.

Come, for love waxes cold,

Its steps are faint and slow;

Faith now is lost in unbelief,

Hope’s lamp burns dim and low.

Come, and make all things new,

Build up this ruined earth;

Restore our faded paradise,

Creation’s second birth.

Psalm 36:6-12

According to his promise we await new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Pt 3:13)

Sometimes, in the midst of the satisfactions of everyday life, we might be tempted to wonder whether or not we really want Christ to come and transform the world as we know it. Then we remember the harsh realities of sickness, hunger, suffering, and death. Who does not long then for the everlasting riches of God’s house, given to us through the mercy of Christ our Shepherd and Savior?

Your love, Lord, reaches to heaven;

your truth to the skies.

Your justice is like God’s mountain,

your judgments like the deep.

To both man and beast you give protection.

O Lord, how precious is your love.

My God, the sons of men

find refuge in the shelter of your wings.

They feast on the riches of your house;

they drink from the stream of your delight.

In you is the source of life

and in your light we see light.

Keep on loving those who know you,

doing justice for upright hearts.

Let the foot of the proud not crush me

nor the hand of the wicked cast me out.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Isaiah 65:18-19

Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness/ in what I create;/ For I create Jerusalem to be a joy/ and its people to be a delight;/ I will rejoice in Jerusalem/ and exult in my people./ No longer shall the sound of weeping be heard there,/ or the sound of crying.

You will meet with joy and gladness;/ sorrow

and mourning will flee. (cf. Is 35:10)

Canticle of Zechariah

Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! (Is 25:9)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Let us pray to Christ, the Good Shepherd, whose coming we await with joy:

R/Come, Lord, and lead us to life.

You seek us in our hunger and our thirst, in our suffering and our pain:

– bring us to the joy of your holy mountain. R/

You feed the starving:

– nourish the hungry of heart with the bread of life and the hungry of body with daily sustenance. R/

You ward off the wolves of death with the staff of your cross:

– bring to peace those who live under death’s threat. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

Lamb of God and Shepherd of God’s people, Lord Jesus Christ, you come to gather into the kingdom all your straying flock. Heal us, feed us, call us to follow in your footsteps and to encourage one another in your ways, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

How God was known as a “good shepherd” in the Old Testament

Say this short powerful prayer when you feel weak in the morning.

Prayer for the Evening (Tuesday, November 30)

Prayer for the Evening

Let us lift up our hearts to the Lord!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

Saint Andrew, who once cast your nets

Upon the lake of Galilee,

Show now your skill in catching souls,

And save us from the world’s wide sea.

Saint Peter’s brother during life,

Not even death your souls could part,

Since both endured the bitter cross

With patient and courageous heart.

True brothers in your work on earth,

Your crown of glory is the same,

Both fathers of the infant Church,

Both crucified for Jesus’ Name.

You were the first to find Our Lord,

And led your brother to his feet,

So help us on life’s weary way,

Befriend us in its dust and heat.

Companion of your brother’s toil,

Preserve the Church in charity,

That with Saint Peter, shepherd true,

We may serve God in unity.

Belovèd Saint, so dear to Christ,

Help us to run the path of love,

That we may all God’s praises sing,

United in full joy above.

Psalm 25:1-6, 8-10

Then they left their nets and followed him. (Mk 1:18)

This psalm captures the picture of true hope painted by Saint Andrew’s willingness to put his entire life and his death in the Lord’s hands. He dared to leave all familiar securities and to entrust his future to Christ’s promise because he trusted the faithful love Christ had always shown him in the past.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.

I trust you, let me not be disappointed;

do not let my enemies triumph.

Those who hope in you shall not be disappointed,

but only those who wantonly break faith.

Lord, make me know your ways.

Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my savior.

In you I hope all day long

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

he guides the humble in the right path;

he teaches his way to the poor.

His ways are faithfulness and love

for those who keep his covenant and law.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Matthew 19:29

Everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.

I am the way

and the truth and the life. (Jn 14:6)

Canticle of Mary

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. (Lk 14:27)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Lord, you demanded everything of your disciples—and gave them everything and more, even to life eternal. Through the intercession of Saint Andrew, we pray:

R/To you, O Lord, we lift up our souls!

You called the disciples to leave home, family, and all they had:

– inspire many men and women in our day to leave all things to follow you in lives of dedication to your service. R/

You called the disciples to abandon plans and projects:

– teach us to seek your will rather than our own. R/

You rewarded your disciples with everlasting life:

– bring into the joy of your presence all of our beloved dead. R/

Prayer for the Morning (Tuesday, November 30)

Saint Andrew

Prayer for the Morning

Jesus Christ is the light of the Apostles:

come, let us walk in his way!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

When Christ our Lord to Andrew cried:

“Come, thou, and follow me,”

The fisher left his net beside

The Sea of Galilee.

To teach the truth his Master taught,

To tread the path he trod

Was all his will, and thus he brought

Unnumbered souls to God.

When Andrew’s hour had come, and he

Was doomed like Christ to die,

He kissed his cross exultingly,

And this his loving cry:

“O noble cross, O precious wood!

I long have yearned for thee;

Uplift me to my only Good

Who died on thee for me.”

Psalm 85:9-14

Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mt 16:24)

Saint Andrew showed his courage not by feats of physical prowess but by his unrelenting commitment to the Gospel of the cross written in the blood of Jesus Christ. Andrew died as he had lived, the true servant of his beloved Master, whose message of love and mercy shaped Andrew’s life and death.

I will hear what the Lord God has to say,

a voice that speaks of peace,

peace for his people and his friends

and those who turn to him in their hearts.

His help is near for those who fear him

and his glory will dwell in our land.

Mercy and faithfulness have met;

justice and peace have embraced.

Faithfulness shall spring from the earth

and justice look down from heaven.

The Lord will make us prosper

and our earth shall yield its fruit.

Justice shall march before him

and peace shall follow his steps.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Isaiah 12:2

God indeed is my savior;/ I am confident and un-afraid./ My strength and my courage is the Lord,/ and he has been my savior.

Fear not, beloved, you are safe;

take courage and be strong. (Dn 10:19)

Canticle of Zechariah

Since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. (2 Cor 4:1)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

O Lord, you called Saint Andrew from the simple safety of the life of a village fisherman to take the message of salvation to all the world. Through his intercession we pray:

R/Keep us faithful in your service.

You sign all your disciples with the sign of the cross:

– grant us the courage to live what we professed in baptism. R/

You call all your disciples to take up the cross and follow you:

– let no suffering dampen our enthusiasm for the Gospel. R/

You arm all your disciples with the weapons of faith, hope, and charity:

– make us messengers of your peace. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

Lord Jesus Christ, Saint Andrew left home and livelihood and even life itself to follow you. May we love you more than life itself and love all of life’s gifts as treasures to be shared with all who are in need. We ask this in your name, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THIS MORNING (MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30)

Get your day started with God with these 7 powerful morning prayers

Prayer for the Morning (Monday, November 29)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord shall redeem us from the hand of

our conqueror: come, let us walk in his light!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

O radiance, Christ, O joyous light,

Whose mirth brings all the stars to birth:

Our Abba’s fullness far outpoured

Beyond the fragile hopes of earth.

Word sounding in creation’s core,

Embodied in a maiden’s heart,

Received in wonder: wonderful

God’s Word-made-flesh within this ark.

Your great compassion knew no bounds

To save us from the brink of hell.

You’d come, espoused, through Mary’s womb:

Life, sacrificed, to make us well.

Night weighed upon our war-torn world

When silently you pitched your tent.

Front-runner, bridegroom, blazing sun,

To claim the prize your sole intent.

How glorious your victory!

Your name alone the name we bear.

Come judge the living and the dead,

Yet pity us whose flesh you share.

Psalm 2

A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,/ and from his roots a bud shall blossom. (Is 11:1)

On the first weekday of Advent, we are reminded that the full coming of the reign of God through Christ, for whom we long, will bring trouble and pain to all of us in whatever sinfulness we are engaged in, but only to cleanse us to dwell in justice and peace in his presence.

Why this tumult among nations,

among peoples this useless murmuring?

They arise, the kings of the earth,

princes plot against the Lord and his Anointed.

“Come, let us break their fetters,

come, let us cast off their yoke.”

He who sits in the heavens laughs;

the Lord is laughing them to scorn.

Then he will speak in his anger,

his rage will strike them with terror.

“It is I who have set up my king

on Zion, my holy mountain.”

I will announce the decree of the Lord:

The Lord said to me: “You are my Son.

It is I who have begotten you this day.

Ask and I shall bequeath you the nations,

put the ends of the earth in your possession.

With a rod of iron you will break them,

shatter them like a potter’s jar.”

Now, O kings, understand,

take warning, rulers of the earth;

serve the Lord with awe

and trembling, pay him your homage

lest he be angry and you perish;

for suddenly his anger will blaze.

Blessed are they who put their trust in God.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Jeremiah 23:5-6

Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord,/ when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David;/ As king he shall reign and govern wisely,/ he shall do what is just and right in the land./ In his days Judah shall be saved,/ Israel shall dwell in security./ This is the name they give him:/ “The Lord our justice.”

The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. (Jer 33:14)

Canticle of Zechariah

On Mount Zion there shall be a portion saved;/ the mountain shall be holy. (Ob 17)

Pray for the sick with this short prayer

0

When we are in good health, we should never forget to pray for the sick and those suffering.

Good health is a true blessing, but it is tempting to forget the suffering that the sick endure during such a time. It is simply not something that comes to mind. Whatever our situation might be, we should pause for a few moments each day to pray for the sick.

Prayers help, and when we aren’t medical professionals, sometimes prayers are the only help we can offer.

Here is a short prayer from the Golden Manual to pray for the sick, asking God to restore them to total health.

Short Prayer for the Sick

Heal your servants, O Lord, who are sick, and who put their trust in you.

Send them help, O Lord, and comfort them from your holy place.

O almighty and everlasting God, hear us on behalf of your servants who are sick;

for whom we humbly beg the help of your mercy;

that, their health being restored to them, they may render thanks to you.

Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion

0

Our Lord to Sr. Benigna Consolata: “Make as many Act of Spiritual Communion as possible, to supply for the many Sacramental Communions which are not made. One every quarter of an hour is not enough. Make them shorter, but more numerous.”

Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart,

As though You have already come.

I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You;

never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen

Can’t receive the Eucharist? Here’s how to make a spiritual communion

0

Saints regularly made an act of spiritual communion when they were unable to receive the Holy Eucharist at Mass.

For several reasons, we may be restricted from receiving the Eucharist at Mass. We may have violated the one-hour fast, been in a state of mortal sin, or we could even be homebound; unable to leave our home to attend Mass. In these cases, the Church urges us to make an act of “spiritual communion;” where we fuse ourselves to God through prayer. It is a wonderful way to express to God our desire to be united with him; when we cannot complete that union in the reception of Holy Communion.

Numerous saints incorporated this type of prayer into their daily lives, not being satisfied with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist once a week or even once a day. Performing an act of spiritual communion for them was a vital part of life and drew them closer to God on a daily basis.

St. Josemaria Escriva urged everyone to perform a spiritual communion as often as they could, “What a source of grace there is in spiritual communion! Practice it frequently, and you’ll have a greater presence of God and closer union with Him in all your actions.”

Also, Saint Padre Pio also had a habit of making a spiritual communion throughout the day outside of the celebration of Mass. He constantly desired to be united with Jesus Christ in everything he did.

Below is a traditional prayer of spiritual communion that many saints have prayed over the years. Say this prayer if you find yourself at Mass unable to receive the Eucharist, or even amid your daily work, lifting your thoughts to God.

The ultimate goal of our lives should be communion with God. Hence, an act of spiritual communion can help a person draw closer to that goal.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Wrapped in your glory bright,

Then shall the earth in terror quake,

The sun withhold his light.

When you shall come, O Lord,

Then to your judgment-bar,

E’en as a mighty stream, shall flow

The sons of men from far.

When you shall come, O Lord,

Then shall the books be spread,

And from their secrets you shalt judge

The living and the dead.

When you shall come, O Lord,

Then save me by your pow’r,

Let not the flames of wrath o’ertake

Your servant in that hour.

When you shall come, O Lord,

In mercy let me stand—

No guilt upon my conscience laid—

Approved, at your right hand.

Psalm 29:1-6, 10-13

And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (Lk 21:27)

In the apocalyptic tradition, the signs of Christ’s coming at the end of time are terrifying spectacles of nature. In the sacramental vision, the signs of Christ’s coming in daily life are the kind of acts of love described in the Word of God for this morning’s prayer. Let us be vigilant to see Christ in whatever good is done for us and to make him manifest in the good we do for others.

O give the Lord, you sons of God,

give the Lord glory and power;

give the Lord the glory of his name.

Adore the Lord in his holy court.

The Lord’s voice resounding on the waters,

the Lord on the immensity of waters;

the voice of the Lord, full of power,

the voice of the Lord, full of splendor.

The Lord’s voice shattering the cedars,

the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon;

he makes Lebanon leap like a calf

and Sirion like a young wild-ox.

The Lord’s voice flashes flames of fire.

The Lord’s voice shaking the wilderness,

the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh;

the Lord’s voices rending the oak tree

and stripping the forest bare.

The God of glory thunders.

In his temple they all cry: “Glory!”

The Lord sat enthroned over the flood;

[the] Lord sits as king for ever.

The Lord will give strength to his people,

[the] Lord will bless his people with peace.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-17

We urge you, brothers, to admonish the idle, cheer the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient with all. See that no one returns evil for evil; rather, always seek what is good [both] for each other and for all. Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.

Be vigilant at all times. (Lk 21:36)

Canticle of Zechariah

When these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. (Lk 21:28)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

With joyful hope, we pray:

R/Come and rule the world with justice!

Where sin and evil rule: R/

[Where] hatred and division prevail: R/

Where peace is broken: R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

O Lord of justice, your coming overthrows all that is not ruled by you. Fill us with expectation and transform our hearts and lives, so that we may welcome you when you come. You live and reign with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
