Prayer for the Evening (Thursday, February 3)

Prayer for the Evening

Your love, Lord, reaches to heaven;/

your truth to the skies: to you we pray. (cf. Ps 36:6)

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

Close beside the heart that loves me

Would I rest in sorrow’s hour,

With a Father’s smile above me,

And beneath—an arm of power.

Weak and worthless, worn and weary,

Welcome bids my faith be strong;

Sorrow’s hour is short, if dreary,

Joy shall last through ages long.

Dark the hour, but comes the morrow,

Dawn shall waken by and by;

Light shall gild the clouds of sorrow

When the sun is in the sky.

Rest, my soul: that love unfailing

Strengthens in the hour of woe—

For the pain your life assailing

Found him when he dwelt below.

Psalm 18:2-7, 14, 17-20

Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit. (Rom 5:5)

In the evening, when our strength is worn low by the day behind us and the darkness of night awaits us, it is easy to grow downcast. Let us put our hope in Christ our Savior, our strength and our joy.

I love you, Lord, my strength,

my rock, my fortress, my savior.

My God is the rock where I take refuge;

my shield, my mighty help, my stronghold.

The Lord is worthy of all praise:

when I call I am saved from my foes.

The waves of death rose about me;

the torrents of destruction assailed me;

the snares of the grave entangled me;

the traps of death confronted me.

In my anguish I called to the Lord;

I cried to my God for help.

From his temple he heard my voice;

my cry came to his ears.

The Lord thundered in the heavens;

the Most High let his voice be heard.

From on high he reached down and seized me;

he drew me forth from the mighty waters.

He snatched me from my powerful foe,

from my enemies whose strength I could not match.

They assailed me in the day of my misfortune,

but the Lord was my support.

He brought me forth into freedom,

he saved me because he loved me.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 1 Peter 3:18

For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God. Put to death in the flesh, he was brought to life in the spirit.

My savior and my God! (Ps 42:6)

Canticle of Mary

He leads me in right paths/ for his name’s sake. (cf. Ps 23:3)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

As evening comes upon the world, we ask on behalf of all in need:

R/We hope in you, O God.

For those who have been deceived, cheated, and betrayed:

– restore their trust in others and in you. R/

For the weak and weary:

– strengthen them with the light and fidelity of Christ. R/

For those who are tempted to take their own lives:

– renew them in hope and in courage. R/

For those who live in places where no one is permitted to go before your altar:

– grant them the freedom to worship in their hearts until they can worship you in public. R/

Personal intentions

Our Father….

May the God of peace himself make us perfect in holiness. May he preserve us whole and entire, spirit, soul, and body, irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. (cf. 1 Thes 5:23)

Marian Antiphon

Your praise, O Virgin Mary, shall not recede

from the mouths of men,

who have ever been mindful of the power of the Lord,

for whom you did not spare your life.

Salve Regina

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;

vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Evae.

Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes

in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra,

illos tuos misericordes oculos

ad nos converte.

Et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,

nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,

our life, our sweetness, and our hope.

To you do we cry,

poor banished children of Eve.

To you do we send up our sighs,

mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.

Turn then, O most gracious advocate,

your eyes of mercy toward us,

and after this our exile

show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V/ Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,

R/ That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer for the Evening (Tuesday, February 1)

Prayer for the Evening

Our God is love:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Come, Holy Spirit, as a fire;

Bright deeds of charity inspire.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Most holy sanctifying flame,

Kindle the earth in Jesus’ Name.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Come, Holy Spirit, as a dove;

Build up your Church in peace and love.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gift of the Father and the Son,

Make us in them completely one.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Psalm 119:97-104

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (Jn 14:15)

The commandments are summed up in the command to love. Love is not mere sentiment. Love requires that we refrain from everything that would harm another, and choose to do whatever will serve the other person’s true well-being.

Lord, how I love your law!

It is ever in my mind.

Your command makes me wiser than my foes;

for it is mine for ever.

I have more insight than all who teach me

for I ponder your will.

I have more understanding than the old

for I keep your precepts.

I turn my feet from evil paths

to obey your word.

I have not turned away from your decrees;

you yourself have taught me.

Your promise is sweeter to my taste

than honey in the mouth.

I gain understanding from your precepts;

I hate the ways of falsehood.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Leviticus 19:17-18

You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.

Love does no evil to the neighbor;

hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.

(Rom 13:10)

Canticle of Mary

I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. (Jn 13:34)

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

Intercessions

With love for the God who has so loved us, we pray:

R/Teach us your ways, O Lord!

You made us in your image:

– reveal your love to the world through our love for one another. R/

You showed the depth of your love in the mystery of the cross:

– grant us the wisdom to seek forgiveness rather than vengeance. R/

You taught us that all peoples are neighbors:

– remove all the false boundaries that set limits to our love. R/

Prayer for the Morning (Monday, January 31)

Prayer for the Morning

The Lord teaches us his statutes:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Thou who didst befriend the friendless,

Toiling here with heart so brave,

By thy love and labor endless

Fondly striving souls to save.

R/Saint John Bosco, guard and guide us.

We our hearts now pledge to thee.

Grant that we, whate’er betide us,

True to God shall ever be.

Our imperfect work perfecting,

Set our souls aflame with fire.

All our thoughts and acts directing

That they may to God aspire. R/

For the young thy life was given,

Thou the poor didst hold most dear.

Now when thou art throned in heaven

Help and bless thy children here. R/

Psalm 119:9-16

Your servant has revered the Lord from his youth. (1 Kgs 18:12)

Saint John Bosco devoted a great deal of attention to the question of how the young could be formed for a good, holy Christian life. He chose love rather than severity as his tool for teaching children to treasure God’s will and promise.

How shall the young remain sinless?

By obeying your word.

I have sought you with all my heart:

let me not stray from your commands.

I treasure your promise in my heart

lest I sin against you.

Blessed are you, O Lord;

teach me your statutes.

With my tongue I have recounted

the decrees of your lips.

I rejoiced to do your will

as though all riches were mine.

I will ponder all your precepts

and consider your paths.

I take delight in your statutes;

I will not forget your word.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Proverbs 4:4-5

He taught me, and said to me:/ “Let your heart hold fast my words:/ keep my commands, that you may live!

“Get wisdom, get understanding!/ Do not forget or turn aside from the words I utter.”

My son, if you wish, you can be taught;/

if you apply yourself, you will be shrewd.

(Sir 6:32)

Canticle of Zechariah

Like a father God has reared me from my youth,/ guiding me even from my mother’s womb. (Jb 31:18)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior,

born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old

that he would save us from our enemies,

from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,

holy and righteous in his sight

all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

God is the one Teacher: let us pray through the intercession of Saint John Bosco that we may all be faithful learners.

R/Teach us your ways, O Lord!

You sent your Word to instruct your people in wisdom:

– form us according to your will. R/

You sent your Son into the world to show us the way to life:

– make us faithful disciples. R/

You have sent many teachers to lead your children according to the Gospel:

– guide all those who guide others. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Through the example and intercession of Saint John Bosco, inspire many to devote their lives to the formation and guidance of the young according to your Word of life, who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for the Evening (Sunday, January 30)

Prayer for the Evening

Our Lord is the King of prophets.

Come, let us adore him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Holy Spirit, Truth divine,

Dawn upon this soul of mine;

Breath of God and inward Light

Wake my spirit, clear my sight.

Holy Spirit, Love divine,

Glow within this heart of mine;

Kindle every high desire;

Perish self in your pure fire.

Holy Spirit, Power divine

Fill and nerve this will of mine;

By you may I strongly live,

Bravely bear and nobly strive.

Holy Spirit, Right divine,

King within my conscience reign;

Be my Lord, and I shall be

Firmly bound, forever free.

Psalm 105:8-15

Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. (Lk 4:24)

God has given to every member of the Church the offices of priest, prophet, and king. How often do we recognize the gift of prophecy in our fellow Christians? The Lord has placed them here to speak to us and contribute to our own sanctification. Let us not reject the gift of God, like those in today’s Gospel, because we see the one bringing it as “ordinary.” Rather let us recognize God’s voice in our fellow men. Let us listen for the extraordinary message that we just may hear.

God remembers his covenant for ever,

his promise for a thousand generations,

the covenant he made with Abraham,

the oath he swore to Isaac.

He confirmed it for Jacob as a law,

for Israel as a covenant forever.

He said: “I am giving you a land,

Canaan, your appointed heritage.”

When they were few in number,

a handful of strangers in the land,

when they wandered from country to country,

from one kingdom and nation to another,

he allowed no one to oppress them;

he admonished kings on their account:

“Do not touch those I have anointed;

do no harm to any of my prophets.”

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11

To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.

No prophecy ever came through human will;

but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God. (2 Pt 1:21)

Canticle of Mary

A prophet to the nations I appointed you. (Jer 1:5)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

How To Prepare For The Holy Spirit To Come Into Your Life

PRAYER FOR THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Prayer for the Morning (Sunday, January 30)

Prayer for the Morning

Our Lord is a God of peace.

Come, let us praise him!

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

O God, Creator of mankind,

Ordaining all with single mind,

Who order that the dry land springs

With feral beasts and crawling things,

Whose ord’ring word invigorates

The animals with bodies great

As gifts, to serve in ordered deeds:

The servants of our human needs.

Then from Your servants drive away

The things impurity may say,

Such things as habit may propose,

Or we may by our acts dispose.

Give to Your servants palms of joy.

Give gifts of grace, Lord, and destroy

Our quarrels’ chains, and when they cease,

Establish lasting bonds of peace.

Psalm 34:2, 9-15

They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero,/ Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. (Is 9:5)

As Christians, followers of the Prince of Peace, we are called to be peacemakers in the world. But how often do we find ourselves causing strife rather than peace by our careless words and actions? God does not ask us to be defenseless or “pushovers,” but he does call us not to cause harm to others. Just as by helping the unfortunate we can show our love for Christ, by our negligence or ill-will toward our brothers and sisters, we show disregard for our Savior. Let us live joyfully in love and peace!

I will bless the Lord at all times,

his praise always on my lips.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.

He is happy who seeks refuge in him.

Revere the Lord, you his saints.

They lack nothing, those who revere him.

Strong lions suffer want and go hungry

but those who seek the Lord lack no blessing.

Come, children, and hear me

that I may teach you the fear of the Lord.

Who is he who longs for life

and many days, to enjoy his prosperity?

Then keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from speaking deceit.

Turn aside from evil and do good;

seek and strive after peace.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Romans 12:14, 18-21

Bless those who persecute [you], bless and do not curse them. If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. Beloved, do not look for revenge but leave room for the wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Rather, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.

So faith, hope, love remain, these three;

but the greatest of these is love. (1 Cor 13:13)

Canticle of Zechariah

Prayer for the Evening (Friday, January 28)

Prayer for the Evening

In Christ is the source of life;

in his light, we see light:

let us give thanks and praise.

Glory to the Father…. Alleluia!

Hymn

A noble son of noble race

And born of house enriched with fame,

The youthful Thomas, led by grace,

Within the Preachers’ Order came.

Applaud, O Mother Church, and praise

The happy end that Thomas made:

By merit of Life’s word and ways

He reached the joys that never fade.

Then be to Father and to Son

And Holy Spirit praise confessed;

May we through merit Thomas won

Be joined in heaven with the blest.

Canticle. Sirach 14:20-21, 24-27; 15:4-6

Whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (Jn 3:21)

Saint Thomas lived in the truth of Christ and so came to know the incomparable light of God’s revelation. That was his unfailing joy.

Happy the man who meditates on wisdom,

and reflects on knowledge;

Who ponders her ways in his heart,

and understands her paths;

Who encamps near her house,

and fastens his tent pegs next to her walls;

Who pitches his tent beside her,

and lives as her welcome neighbor;

Who builds his nest in her leafage,

and lodges in her branches;

Who takes shelter with her from the heat,

and dwells in her home.

He will lean upon her and not fall,

he will trust in her and not be put to shame.

She will exalt him above his fellows;

in the assembly she will make him eloquent.

Joy and gladness he will find,

an everlasting name inherit.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. Wisdom 6:22

Now what Wisdom is, and how she came to be, I shall relate;/ and I shall hide no secrets from you,/ But from the very beginning I shall search out/ and bring to light knowledge of her,/ nor shall I diverge from the truth.

Light produces every kind of goodness

and righteousness and truth. (Eph 5:9)

Canticle of Mary

God has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in Christ. (cf. Eph 1:9)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Evening Prayer for Tuesday, January 25

Prayer for the Evening

Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life:

let us give thanks and praise!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

Great convert Teacher of the Faith

Who never ceased from preaching Christ,

Saint Paul, impart to us your zeal,

That we may reach the joys unseen.

All glory to the Trinity,

For ever honor, sov’reignty;

To God Almighty be all praise,

Beginning and the End of all.

Psalm 19:8-15

The law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed you from the law of sin and death. (Rom 8:2)

On the road to Damascus, Saint Paul was freed from the law of sin and death to become a willing slave to the law of life and love given in Jesus Christ.

The law of the Lord is perfect,

it revives the soul.

The rule of the Lord is to be trusted,

it gives wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right,

they gladden the heart.

The command of the Lord is clear,

it gives light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is holy,

abiding for ever.

The decrees of the Lord are truth

and all of them just.

They are more to be desired than gold,

than the purest of gold,

and sweeter are they than honey,

than honey from the comb.

So in them your servant finds instruction;

great reward is in their keeping.

But who can detect all his errors?

From hidden faults acquit me.

From presumption restrain your servant

and let it not rule me.

Then shall I be blameless,

clean from grave sin.

May the spoken words of my mouth,

the thoughts of my heart,

win favor in your sight, O Lord,

my rescuer, my rock!

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 1 Corinthians 15:8-10

Last of all, as to one born abnormally, [Christ] appeared to me. For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Indeed, I have toiled harder than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God [that is] with me.

I am Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be

an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.

(cf. Rom 1:1)

Canticle of Mary

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain. (Jn 15:16)

[he] has scattered the proud in their conceit.

– grant the wisdom of the cross to all those who wish to serve you. R/

Your decrees are truth:

– turn all peoples away from appealing deceptions and toward the truth of the Gospel. R/

Prayer for the Morning (Tuesday, January 25)

The Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle

Prayer for the Morning

The heavens proclaim the glory of God:

come, let us adore!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

From heaven’s height Christ spoke to call

The Gentiles’ great Apostle, Paul,

Whose doctrine, like the thunder, sounds

To the wide world’s remotest bounds.

O bliss of Paul, beyond all thought,

To paradise, yet living, caught!

He hears the heavenly mysteries there,

Which mortal tongue cannot declare.

The word’s good seed abroad he flings;

Straight’way a mighty harvest springs,

And fruits of holy deeds supply

God’s everlasting granary.

The lamp his burning faith displays

Has filled the world with glorious rays;

That darkness’ realm may be o’erthrown,

And Christ may reign, and reign alone.

Psalm 19:2-7

A great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. (Acts 22:6)

Paul literally saw the light on the road to Damascus. The love of the risen Christ transformed him and impelled him to illumine the whole world by the light of the Gospel.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God

and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.

Day unto day takes up the story

and night unto night makes known the message.

No speech, no word, no voice is heard

yet their span extends through all the earth,

their words to the utmost bounds of the world.

There he has placed a tent for the sun;

it comes forth like a bridegroom coming from his tent,

rejoices like a champion to run its course.

At the end of the sky is the rising of the sun;

to the furthest end of the sky is its course.

There is nothing concealed from its burning heat.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.

Go into the whole world and proclaim

the gospel to every creature.

(Mk 16:15)

Canticle of Zechariah

The God of our ancestors designated you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his voice; for you will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard. (Acts 22:14-15)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

he has come to his people and set them free.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet

of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

to shine on those who dwell in darkness

and the shadow of death,

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father…

Intercessions

Jesus Christ, the risen Lord, sends the word of light into a world of darkness to enlighten, to transform, to heal, and to save. With grateful joy, we pray:

R/In your light we see light.

Lord Jesus Christ, you turned Saint Paul’s zeal for the way of his ancestors into zeal for you, who are the Way and the Truth:

– open the minds of all people of good will to receive your transforming word. R/

Lord Jesus Christ, you called Saint Paul out of darkness into your marvelous light:

– enlighten all those who hate and persecute in the name of religious righteousness. R/

Lord Jesus Christ, you sent Saint Paul to preach the Good News to unbelievers:

– send eloquent preachers among the unchurched, the unconvinced, the indifferent. R/

Lord Jesus Christ, you commissioned Saint Paul to bring new life to Jew and Gentile, man and woman, slave and free:

– speak the word of life and love to all who dwell apart from you and are hostile to one another. R/

(Personal intentions)

Our Father….

Great God of glory, you called Saint Paul to preach the Gospel to all nations. By the power of the Gospel he preached, draw all peoples to yourself, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

What is the “Three days of darkness” revelation and what does the Church teach about it?

Start your day with this morning prayer of hope

Did St Paul Have the Stigmata?

With this nighttime prayer, forgive those who have hurt you

St. Paul wrote, “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26).

In the course of a day, there is often at least one person who hurts us in some way. This could be a mean-spirited comment, a dirty look, or talking about us behind our backs. Whatever it is, we should resist the urge to hold a grudge that festers over time. Instead, we need to forgive that person, especially before going to bed. We don’t necessarily need to tell that person of our forgiveness, but we do need to forgive them in our hearts. This interior forgiveness will naturally lead us to be more charitable to the person when we see them next and help calm our anger down as well.

Jesus is the supreme example of this, as he forgave those who crucified him.

St. Paul also spoke about this practice, writing, “Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26).

Here is a short prayer from the Golden Manual that vocalizes this forgiveness, reminding you to forgive those who have hurt you, not letting the “sun set on your anger.”

With this nighttime prayer, forgive those who have hurt you

O God, I love you with all my heart and soul, and desire to love you as the blessed do in heaven. I adore all the designs of your divine Providence, resigning myself entirely to your will.

I also love my neighbor for your sake, as I love myself. I sincerely forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

O my good Angel, whom God, by his divine mercy, has appointed to be my guardian, enlighten and protect me, direct and govern me this night. Amen.

An effective prayer for when you are feeling angry

Pope Francis: ‘God listens to all prayers, even angry ones’

Prayer for the Evening (Tuesday, January 25)

Prayer for the Evening

Come, let us give thanks to the Lord:

for his love endures for ever!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn

The Son of Man has come to save

The lost and dark of mind.

All men and women bound in chains

In him their freedom find.

In him the blind shall come to see,

The deaf shall understand,

For Jesus guides the erring soul

With his redeeming hand.

The Son of Man has come to serve

To seek and save the lost.

Blest be the Lord whose saints reveal

The triumph of his Cross.

Psalm 107:1-9

The Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost. (Lk 19:10)

The Lord seeks out the lost and gathers them into the safe dwelling place of his kingdom through the wise and courageous guidance of pastors like Saint Francis de Sales.

“O give thanks to the Lord for he is good;

for his love endures for ever.”

Let them say this, the Lord’s redeemed,

whom he redeemed from the hand of the foe

and gathered from far-off lands,

from east and west, north and south.

Some wandered in the desert, in the wilderness,

finding no way to a city they could dwell in.

Hungry they were and thirsty;

their soul was fainting within them.

Then they cried to the Lord in their need

and he rescued them from their distress

and he led them along the right way,

to reach a city they could dwell in.

Let them thank the Lord for his love,

for the wonders he does for men.

For he satisfies the thirsty soul;

he fills the hungry with good things.

Glory to the Father….

Word of God. 1 Peter 5:1-4

I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter and witness to the sufferings of Christ and one who has a share in the glory to be revealed. Tend the flock of God in your midst, [overseeing] not by constraint but willingly, as God would have it, not for shameful profit but eagerly. Do not lord it over those assigned to you, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

A bishop as God’s steward must be blameless,

hospitable, a lover of goodness, temperate, just,

holy, and self-controlled. (cf. Ti 1:7-8)

Canticle of Mary

I will rescue my people from the land of the rising sun, and from the land of the setting sun. (Zec 8:7)

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.

Intercessions

The Good Shepherd and all his faithful servants bear the wounds of those who have sought the lost through thicket and thorn. With confidence, let us pray:

R/Lead your people home!

For those who seek holiness through the guidance of the Gospel:

– direct them to wise pastors. R/

For those who have lost sight of the goals of faith, hope, and love:

– restore them to the path of life. R/

For those who hunger and thirst for righteousness:

– grant them their fill. R/
